I don't understand it at all. You make the effort to watch an item and bid on it and still don't know if you'll win.
and you have no idea what the reserve amt is to try and win. It is especially aggravating when the starting bid is really low. Well what does that matter? You still won't get a great deal if the seller has a high reserve price.
It is so stupid. |

I agree it is pretty aggravating. Its like if the reserve is going to be so high than why start the bidding so low right? I've only sold a few things on ebay so I'm not entirely sure but I think it may have to do with the fees that you pay when you sell something. First I know it does cost something to put a reserve on your item, but if you don't want to lose money on your item and practically give it away than the reserve does help the seller. And also the fees are different for where you start the bidding on your item. If the seller just wants to pay the lowest fee he'll start the bidding really low. I think it all has to do with the ebay fees, which were a LOT more than I initially thought they were before I sold stuff. Not to mention then they hit up the seller for the paypal fee, WHICH they have the NERVE to take from the TOTAL price of your item, not from the price after ebay deducts, so they're DOUBLE screwing the seller. AND paypal and ebay are from the same company! Oh they know they're screwin ya, they just don't care. And as much as I can rant about ebay, I love it so darn much! |

ok so I am bidding on something and set my highest bidding amt. so IF I win, and the highest bidding amt is low, (it is going for $100 right now and I set $150 for my highest amt) I don't have to purchase it for more than the winning bid amt right? I am not forced to pay my highest bidding amt b/c of this reserve price right? |

Actually if the highest bid amount is low right now and still says "reserve not met", than you still have to at least pay the reserve. When you put in your bid IF you met the reserve the reserve not met message will go away. If it's still there than your highest bid isn't enough. But to answer your question, if you met the reserve and you successfully win than you are forced to pay the reserve, but that price may not be as high as your highest bid. Make sense? I know, it is confusing... |

Right, they did not win the auction either. |

Right, the seller didn't get to sell it. I hate when they have some ridiculous reserve price. Its like people go on ebay to get GOOD DEALS. I've been trying to win a vintage trapeze tailpiece for my guitar for months now and EVERYTIME they put this RIDICULOUSLY high reserve price on it. And its not too much higher than I want to pay, but if I wanted to pay that much I'd just go into guitar center and pick it up right away. Some sellers don't seem to realize that people want to pay less for things on ebay than they would in the stores. |

putting a reserve on an item (and starting it low) readily available in stores is kinda dumb and defeats the entire purpose of a reserve. Ebay is not just about finding bargains, it is also the place to get hard-to-find items.
Reserve pricing on Ebay is meant to work the same it does at any regular auction. The resevere is meant to reflect the "value" of the item (think of Christie's auctions or a house auction) and would apply in two cases.
1. it is a collectable item and the seller has a minimum price they will let it go for.
or
2. it could be a currently-available but hard to get in many places item that has a high retail price. If you start an auction at $100 you are less likely to sell the item than if you start the auction at $25 and reserve at $100.
I have used reserve auctions for both conditions to great effect. lets say I want to sell a limited edition collectors watch from Japan. Now I go out and buy that watch today for $100, so of course I want to get at least that amount (plus fees) back, but if I start the auction at say $125 you will get a lot less interest. Mind you, I will usually state my reserve price in the item listing.
As for the fees, if you have a reserve price of say $50 you will still pay the listing fee for a $50 item even if the start price is $0.01 AND you also pay a reserve-price option fee as well. |

In my case sometimes I sell vintage pieces of glass on ebay. Sometimes I do have a reserve as the piece is rare I want to make sure I get the going book price for it considering I've put all the leg work, time and money into finding the piece myself. I don't expect value shoppers to take a second look. When I sell an item like that I know what I have to have for it, take it or leave it.
Like everyone else, I look for good buys on ebay, but at times I've paid near full price for a hard to find item because I realize the product probably didn't fall into their lap so I consider the seller was doing a service for me.
Bottom line: fuel prices are soaring and time is money. |

Yeah, thats right, I did forget about the hard to find items. I DID pay alot more for my vintage silverware because it was so hard to find. However I forgot about this since 95% of the stuff I get I'm looking to ebay for a good deal. Alot of times also it seems you can get a hard to find item with a good price tag too. I just got super callanetics (which isn't sold in stores anymore as its so old and not being made anymore).. I got it for like $4. Not bad, but I admit, I'm a sniper |

Me too! Sniping is the only way to go. And I even rely on those snipers when I sell stuff too! |

I use www.esnipe.com which snipes from their own servers. When I signed up years ago it was free but now they charge. It's such a great service I don't care about the charge though.
Here's the lowdown on pricing. When you do win the cost is 25 cents for items up to US$24.99, 1% of the winning amount for items up to US$1,000 (rounded down to the nearest penny), and a maximum of $10 thereafter. So if you win an item for $47, the fee is 47 cents. If you win an item for $230.58, the fee is $2.30. |

I use BuyerTools Reminder. Its never failed me and its completely free! I don't know if it snipes through its own servers or what not. Infact I'm not sure how it works, I've never looked into it to carefully. I've used it for like a year now though with absolutely no problems. I got it from Download.com. Here's the link (you can read the reviews too):

So Pheobe, have you not ever lost an auction with your service? |
|
|
|
|
Sun Jun 04, 2006 9:40 am |
No, I've lost auctions but not because of the program. The program has been very stable for me, as in no technical errors with the program which is nice for freeware. The reason I've lost was because I didn't put my bid high enough. Usually I bid high if I really want something as I know that I usually won't have to pay that price. But I only go as high as I'm comfortable going in case I DO have to pay that price. Since I've been sniping I win about 85% of the auctions I bid on. I used to only win maybe half. LOTS of times I win at the last second against someone else trying to snipe (as in last minutes not seconds.. u NEED to go with last seconds to snipe correctly) and I'll beat the person by pennies. Sniping is better because you can watch the item carefully. If someone is bidding on the item already you can browse their history too and see if they have a history of sniping so you know what kind of competition for the item you have. |

I do that too... you can also often tell what area their max. bids go to or how much they bid several times previously on the same item as currently on auction. Has usually worked for me too. |

PhoebesMeow do you buy and sell guitars on Ebay? Just curious because my husband buys and sells guitars. Although he has been taking a break after his bad experience with a custom Stratocaster!
Some of you mentioned esnipe and my husband uses this often. It is a good service and I really don't think that their fees are bad. |

No, I just buy them and their parts. I've sold guitar parts but not guitars. And when I sell stuff its not to make a profit off of it, usually its because I made a mistake, can't return something, etc, and I'm just trying to recoup some losses. I don't know if I could or would ever get into selling on ebay too much since I've heard so many horror stories and bad experiences, then again I've heard some good ones too... but I just don't think I could deal with the hassles of selling on ebay on a regular basis. |

My husband just does Ebay as a hobby. He usually buys guitars, tries them and if he likes them keeps them and if not he resells them on Ebay. He says it is a great way to really get to try things!! Although if we have too many guitars in the house I start "requesting" that he sell some!! |
