I saw this in my local store and just HAD to try it especially as it was on offer at 50% off! (I usually use Avene).
I know some people don't like 'chemical' SPF's but if like me you are concerned about sundamage (I am very very fair, have had freckles since I was tiny which fade in the winter and burn even on an overcast UK spring day! My Father also had skin cancer - I figure my risk from skin cancer is higher than any potential problems which 'chemical' sunscreen may have!).
Anyway here's the review:
First the 'blurb':
L'oreal, Solar Expertise Active Anti Wrinkle & Anti Brown Spot Suncream for face, neck, chest and hands.
SPF 50UVB+/Anti UVA Superior protection. Photostable Mexoryl SX & XL.
This Suncream also has 'Boswelox' and Melanin Control. Actively reduces the apprearance of wrinkles and prevents brown spots. Dermatologically tested.
This claims to have an Ultra Light texture and to be anti shine as well as non-comedogenic (won't clog pores).
The texture isn't what you would call matte, however it is is less thick, gloopy and shiny than any of the other photostable (Tinosorb/Mexoryl) high SPF's I have tried. As recommended I used this instead of my usual moisturiser (just over Vit C serum that had completely soaked in). It spreads easily and dosn't make my skin feel suffocated. It leaves a slightly tacky feel on my skin rather than oily but a sweep of Jurlique Silk Powder sorts that out. (I would put this between my SS & MMU anyway when using Mexoryl sunscreens as the Minerals have been reported to possibly degrade the protection).
I put my MMU over the top and that's it.
By lunchtime I usually need to blot and repowder but this made me less shiny and oily than even the Avene. On top of that my skin seems to actually like it! It feels smooth and plump and NO breakouts - I actually like it for its skincare properties - my skin seems to have actually improved - no excess oily or spots but no dehydration which I do suffer from form the heat and/or aircon in the office.
I had to spend the day outside the other day which included a 40 min training session with my horse which made me (and the poor neddy) very hot and ermmm 'glowy'. Not only did I not burn, but I got no extra freckles (you can almost watch these appear normally if I'm outside! LOL). (I also have a convertable car -I know its not good for my skin hence I am neurotic about SPF's, long sleeved bu light clothing and a hat whilst in it!! But the feel good factor of the car makes it worth it!LOL!)
So far texture and protection wise this is the best high spf I have found so far. Ok its nor 'perfect' but its as near perfect as they have managed to produce as yet that works.
Really recommend it - also like their 'regular' SPF50+ UVA superior protection for the body - no burning, no grease, no extra freckles YAY!!! |

I think I might have to try this - I like to wear a chemical sunblock when the sun is strong, as it is right now (for a change!!). I chose Garnier over the L'Oreal spf50 because it didn't seem to be as scented, but I'm finding it very shiny on my skin right now . Strange, because I'm using the last of a tube I got last summer, and I don't recall it being this shiny then - maybe they degrade over time? |

Fifi - I had this with a Boots Soltan - they seem to seperate after a while, the oil seperating out. Certainly they do degrade I was always led to believe that last years SPF was at least a third less protective than it was fresh depending on how it was stored. I usually chuck any SPF from last year out or if it hasn't seperated or got a funny tetture I 'downgrade it' to a body product rather than a facial product. (My arms and legs don't burn as easily as face shoulders etc.
An SPF 50 that was opened last year won't be an SPF 50 this if you see what I mean.
Interesting what you say about the Garnier - I believe they are part of the L'oreal group so the main formula is probably similar. The newcream I reviewed smells fresh and isn't over powering - much less scented than the 'regular' Solar Expertise spf 50, I guess because it was formulated for the face?

I have quite a few half-used sunblocks lying around, so love the idea of using them up on my body instead of throwing them out - hate waste! I'll definitely get some fresh stuff for my face though - I'll see if I can find a tester of the new L'Oreal face cream to check out the scent (not a fan of heavily scented face products - except the Organic Pharmacy gels...but I digress ). I've noticed that they often have a tube open in Boots so you can try them out before buying, which is great. |
