I need to do this too. I asked my aerobics instructor and and she suggested waving my arms around in the water would help (making kind of like an "s" shape over and over in the water). There is enough resistance for the muscle to work but it is not going to build excess muscle which I am worried about because I build muscle really easily.

Tricep exercises! These really tighten up your arms so they appear slimmer...if you google tricep exercises or female tricep exercises there are lots of results. |

A good quick fix is this cream stuff that I bought on an infomercial called Thin n Sexy. You put it on, wrap in cellophane and sit for an hour. You do lose inches and it lasts for about a week. It's not a huge difference but enough for your pants to feel looser and enough to encourage you to go to the gym because you feel better. Obviously my arms weren't instantly cut and toned from it, but they were smaller. I wish I could use it more, but I develop a rash from it, so I'll use it, feel good about inches lost, but kind of itchy and bumpy for a few days afterwards. |

This may be a little unrelated--but has anyone tried Mesotherapy or Lipdissolve? |

a small amount of weight lifting will help tone your arms. Once your arms are more tone, they will appear smaller. Not too much weight though unless you are going for the body builder look |

Your arms show results the fastest of any muscle group (this is what I've heard)... I believe it too... you should start doing some pushups and weight training.. it won't bulk your muscles.. I've greatly reduced my arms in the past couple of months by doing pushups every day and working with 10 pound dumbells.. I would go as far as to say I love my arms these days. |

I agree that push up definitely helps. And you see results fast. I do push ups everyday too!
Another way that I learned from this Yoga video I have...
For Biceps:
- extend your arms out horizontally
- bend them upwards in 90 deg angle
- breathe in as you bend, breathe out as you extend
Do this for a few minutes--you'll feel sore, but do it for another minute or so after you feel the sore.
(The video also recommends that you turn your head all the way left/right as you bend/extend, but I find that hurting my neck)
For Triceps:
- bend your arm upwards and keep your elbow right by your ribs
- breathe in as you extend your arms up high
- breathe out as you bring your arms back down (elbow by the ribs again)
This are really "light weight" exercises and really easy! |

Hi, Juliette, thanks for your suggestion.
I wonder if I could not find a pool easily and we need to do this exercise everyday, right? So, will it be as effective if I do it without water?
I think cant, cause we need water resistance, right? |

Hi, Sweetreat,thanks for your replies.
Compared to biceps and triceps, does pushups give faster results?
How long should I do the bricep and tricep in a day? |

For me I think they both show results about the same rate? Push ups provide more resistance but you do less repititions, whereas the other exercises I mentioned above, you'll be able to do more repititions.
For me personally, I do the 'modified push ups' most of the time , so basically instead of having my toes grounding my lower body, I have my knees on the floor, then lift one leg completely so my leg is parallel to the floor, and have the other knee on the ground but keep my toes pointing upwards so my calf is lifted as well. I do 15 reps on each side and then change.
Here's a "picture" how the body would look like from the side in this position
O------
| |/
"O" is the head. |/ is the bent leg with knee on the floor.
For any push ups, if you keep your elbows pointing outwards away from your body, then you work the biceps more; when you keep your elbows closer to your body (by your ribs), then you work the triceps more.
For the exercises I described above for biceps and triceps, I do maybe several minutes for each exercise. I never really timed it because I just keep on doing it until my arms are really sore and I absolutely can't bend/lift them anymore. You can definitely feel your muscles tightening up afterwards.
Combining these with cardio exercises helps a lot too (my personal favorite is cardio kickboxing because it's good cardio plus you can work out the arms at the same time)!
Good luck!!! |

Hi Handsbella
Lifting to much weight can lead to muscles, but I suggest you lift "light" weights. Too much will cause big defined muscles. But if you lift 5-10 lbs it will tone your arms, thus reducing the fat, so your arms are really smaller and more defined. At least that has been my experience. I do caution you though, I have lifted too much weight in my arms and upper chest, and then I notice I lose my (chest)... |

Lighter weights and more repetitions will help in not bulking up.
Also, if you combine lifting weights with cardio (like running, or an eliptical machine) you will see results much faster.
I sprained my wrist recently from roller derby and could not lift my arms for awhile...I noticed when I waved I also waved down below!
But since having gotten back into focusing on my arms, I've noticed a difference in a few weeks.
The thing is, once you slim down your arms, or any part of your body, you have to keep doing something to maintain it...or your body will go back to the way it was. This is my experience anyway. I lost 60 lbs. and gained 40 of it back when I stopped working out. I kept the last 20 off because i got back in the gym.
Now I'm losing the weight again, but in a more effective (albeit slower) way. |

If you are concerned about getting too bulky, then I would stick to the exercises targeted at women. I don't do pushups myself as I have very weak wrists, but the method sweettreat mentioned is a good way to start. Although I have had no trouble in this department. I do regular tricep exercises with or without 3 pound dumbells, and I get definition, not bulk. Keep in mind that as you gain muscle, you should lose fat, even if you are not changing your diet. Muscle burns a lot more calories than fat, and takes up less space.
Good luck! |
