Well, I can pretty much guarantee that you will cry if/when you rent Disney's Eight Below on DVD. I bought a copy (because it was mostly filmed in Smithers; a bit in Vancouver) yesterday, as it was released on DVD in North America.
Though I saw it in the theatre, and knew the story, I cried AGAIN! I think that Disney should have sold it with a package of tissues!
An awesome movie, however, and probably one of the best that I've seen in a while! I liked the bonus material called "Running With the Dogs", which was about the making of the movie. Interesting. Let me know what you think when you rent it.

I just watched the Eight Below last night. I didn't cry but it is indeed very touching, especially when I saw "Max" gave away his food (the dead bird) to "Maya"...I love this and so as my family. I know this film is inspired by a true story which was also found in Japanese version called "Antarctica". Here's the plot of the Japanese Version...
It's a story about Japan's first scientific expedition to the Antarctic in 1958, where Ushioda and Ochi were confronted by a severe winter with their 15 sled dogs. Later they were forced to abandon all of their sled dogs in an attempt to get back home safely. They apologized for not taking the dogs with them, but people were angry and upset that they left all those beloved dogs behind. A year later, when they returned to the Antarctic to search for the dogs, they found something incredible... two of the sled dogs were still alive, against the odds of extreme weather conditions. |

I love animal movies. I haven't seen this one, but whenever I watch one of those Disney movies where the animals prevail and do something amazing like finding their way home ... I BAWL! I'm a mess! |

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey made me cry. I don't know if I can handle anymore touchy animal flicks. |

The original title for the film was Antarctica, actually! I don't know why Disney changed the title of the movie.
Here's some gossip from last year's shoot in Smithers: the crates for all of the dogs (there were about 23) were donated to an animal shelter in the town, volunteers from the town walked the dogs, Paul Walker LOVED being there (he's really outdoorsy) ... bringing his own dog & daughter Meadow - he did a lot of snowboarding & snowmobiling there, Jason Biggs was social but laid a bit low compared to others (very intellectual guy!), Gary Marshall went up to Smithers to premiere the movie in little `ol Smithers, in their little theatre before the Hollywood premiere, and couldn't say enough about the town.
Makes me proud, even though I moved-away ... ten years-ago, and haven't visited my parents there in three!
Think of it this way when/if you see the movie: the arctic scenes were filmed mostly on "the prairie" of Smithers' Hudson Bay Mountain. It is on the back of the ski-resort, with all of the green/easy runs. Your's-truly: spent a fair amount of time on those easy runs (near the green t-bar lift), learning to ski!

OMG! Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey! I had this on video, and watched it over & over again. Crying! I gave it to Magda's kids about a year ago. SUCH a great movie, though different from the original and the book itself. |

yes! I got this from the library for my kids about two years ago and they just loved it. A classic movie! My little one was about two at the time and she's very sensitive to feelings and to animals. She was very upset when the animals got separated from each other and we had to convince her it would be ok. Thank goodness it was |
