CLEARWATER BEACH, Florida (CNN) -- How confident are you when you slather on sunscreen? What do "waterproof," "all day," "UVA/UVB protection," and "sunblock," mean to you? An important step in protecting against skin cancer, right?

Interesting - thank you. In a somewhat related matter, companies in Australia are also not allowed to market their sunblocks at higher than SPF30 - so they are labelled as SPF30+ even though in fact many of them are over SPF100. The decision here though was based on the fear that people would start spending more time in the sun thinking that they had better protection. I went to a derm and she swore to me that two of the sunblocks she gave me were indeed SPF100+ despite the SPF30+ label. |

This suit makes me happy -- PPD values should be displayed as well as SPF. Even with the French sunscreens, it's not always apparent what level of UVA protection they offer. Consumers shouldn't have to do Internet searches in the attempt to obtain this info, especially considering the rise in skin cancer rates. If this is what it takes to get suncare products to be fully forthcoming, so be it.
And perhaps the FDA will now be under the gun to get going and approve Mexoryl and Tinosorb so that LRP and Avene sunscreens containing those ingredients can be sold in the US. As it is, we have to spend as much for shipping the imports as the actual price of the product. This makes them very expensive in comparison to American sunscreens that can be obtained fairly cheaply. Maybe this is the real point of the foot-dragging. Both France and the US have pissant trade policies. Does anyone remember the flap over blood testing for AIDS??? It's likely this is the case with other countries as well -- it seems to boil down to protectionism.
Thank you phredd4 for posting this. It'll be an interesting case to follow. |
