If I sound a bit panic-stricken, forgive me, but I have just had a big shock!
I have known for a long time that I had small broken capillaries on the outside of my nose (L & R of nostril area), but they were not overly noticeable. I also have a small one near left corner of my mouth, but virtually undetectable.
Well, ACK.. I just went to the ladies room and was taking a peek at the progress of Mt. Vesuvius that popped up on my cheek yesterday when I suddenly noticed the side of my nose... on both sides the capillaries are suddenly a deep red color and very noticeable to me.
Why would they suddenly go this way? I am sure they were not so dark this morning.. could the change be to do with hormones? temperature? some product I am using? (my only new ones are the ADCE & Prep).
How is it we get couperose skin - I mean, why do capillaries break?
Most importantly.. anyone had success with products for couperose skin? Seeing as it is only two small areas I think some kind of serum would be better than a moisturizer...
I always remember the first time I noticed them about 9 years ago. I used one of those original masks/strips for ripping out the guck from your nose pores. I always figured that single treatment did the damage, but I have no idea when or why I got them really. |

"Broken" caps are dilated blood vessels.
Even washing your face with very hot water can "cause" them. When the blood expands, the weakened (be it weakened by hot/cold temps, agressive treatments like pore strips and even tretinoin, etc) capillary walls can burst, causing red splotches in the white of the eyes or under the skin. (That's why it's best to wash w/ tepid water but that's another post)
A derm or plastic surgeon can laser them, it's usually not expensive. Downtime is very minimal. |

I had broken capillaries on the sides of my nose and some on my cheeks. I had IPL several years ago and they totally went away. Last year I started noticing them again. When I started using AlphaDerma/Prep I was not looking to get rid of my broken Capillaries. However, after a couple of months I only have the faintest of them left.
Being in a salon setting for several years, I know something about these nasty little things. When I had the IPL they got darker before they went away. They started off a red/dark pink color then after the IPL they turned purple before they left.
The AlphaDerma could very well be attacking those veins. Obviously they are not causing them. But, I would not be shocked at all if you reported back in a month that they are going away. The healing process can be causing them to look darker first. Think of it this way: New blood is red/pink, old blood darker. Mine are all but gone. The few I have are barely noticable. I asked the company what ingredients could have helped my broken capillaries and we think it is the particular collagen in the product.

Oh boy, I hope that is true, Winnie.
I just looked again (gosh, now I am obsessed). I must remember to check them again tonight when I am under my normal bathroom lighting. Maybe they really have always been like this, but just appear better under my soft bathroom lights as opposed to the fluros in our loos at work. |

Hi Tiger-Tim,
Extremes of temperature i.e. hot and cold cause broken capillaries, especially coming from the cold into a cenral heated enviroment can cause damage; try and make sure that your face is protected at all times (maybe an added layer of face cream or a cream stick foundation).
If the capillaires are pink/red then their not broken and you can reverse the effects , Ella Bache has a product called Crem Tomate (for the face area.
The capillaries are actually broken when they turn a very dark blue / purple I only know of one product on the the market that can help its from Prescriptive; they have a product from their Dr Grossman range which is vasoconstrictor which will clam down the area of concern; I'm not sure if you can use it around the eyes.

It must be the weather tiger-tim.
I don't know the range your using right now, are the formulations thick enough, your going to need a barrier against the cold and wind. Are we the only ones up at this hour? Take care I have to sign off and do some work.

Is a broken capillary ever raised above skin surface? I "received" what I call a broken capillary directly under my right eye, as a result of professional microdermabrasion. This occured eight months ago. It has gone through all kinds of stages and changes through the months, and finally has shrunken to the size of a dull pencil tip and the color is pale pink. But it is still raised slightly above my skin's surface. I noticed that it's gone through it's shrinking stage since I started using Alphaderma CE three months ago. I'm hoping that with continued use, it will go away forever, without the IPL treatment. Has anyone experienced a broken cap. that is slightly above skin surface?
Also, I read a press release that Alphaderma CE is going to be in all the expensive gift bags they give out to celeb presenters at the American Music Awards on November 22nd. That's impressive! |

SuperCelebs, which eye cream with Vit K do you use? I never know where I got the veins under my eyes. As I read your reply, I remembered, I did rub my eyes severely couple years ago because of my allergy. Please let me know what you use. Thanks in advance |

What do minimum broken capillaries look like? Is it like red skin and would jojoba help with that? |

In my experience, broken caps look like tiny little red squiggle marks. Have you ever seen someone with vericose/spider veins in his/her legs? That's sort of what broken caps look like, except they're red instead of blue and they are MUCH smaller in size. I've also been told that there is nothing that will completely get rid of broken caps, short of laser treatments, but there are a few things you can use to help minimize their appearance such as applying certain essential oils (don't forget to mix them with carrier oils!!) to the marks on a regular basis. Check out the DIY Skincare Recipes thread for a basic guide to various essential oils and their use in skin and hair care.
Also, for what it’s worth, I just read this tip in a celeb/fashion magazine article called “25 Star Tips for Getting Gorgeous and Looking Younger:”
Those with fair complexions, like Renee Zellweger, can sometimes suffer from red, irritated skin, especially during the colder months. To take the red out of your skin, apply Visine (ed. note: famous brand of eye drops in the U.S.) to splotchy areas when a Q-tip. The vaso-constrictors in the product work on the skin the same way they do in your eyes: they constrict blood vessels, lessening blood flow to the skin’s surface.
I haven’t tried this myself yet, but I have two broken caps at the base of my nostrils (caused by blowing my snoot too hard during allergy season) that bug me on the days when I’m too lazy to apply my makeup (which are able to conceal the redness quite nicely) so I think I’ll try this trick the next time I decide to go au naturel.’ |

I actually have both types of broken caps. The squiggley ones like Carekate mentioned and one from what I assume was an injury (but I don't remember one) that is just a single pink dot on my left cheek. The squiggley ones I get from my dad's side of the family and are also around the base of my nose.
Thanks for the Visine tip Carekate! I'll have to try this one myself |

I have had 3 IPL's for broken caps and they have helped so, so much. I also had microdermabrasions which I should not have with rosacea, because they can cause more broken caps. Proheal helps calm the redness also. |

How was the IPL, extremely painful? I've considered this myself, but the nose area is so sensitive so I'm concerned it would be very painful, although it should be pretty quick since I only have a few. |

A topical numbing cream is applied first. Some places advise you to take 1-2 vicadin and a xanax to relax you one hour before the procedure. (Although I didn't because I do not respond well to most meds but the first place did recommend it). My second medspa who did my third one doesn't recommend the meds although they did recommend arnica for a day before and 3 days after which did wonders for my recovery time. The first 2 weren't bad although it can be more uncomfortable in certain areas of the face but the zaps were spaced more widely apart and the results were not that noticible. MY 3rd was pretty uncomfortable because they did the IPL under the eyes and that area can be more sensitive. She also more tightly covered the areas of my face (slightly overlapping each light zap) which gave better and more even results. But that does cause more discomfort because there are more zaps or "snaps" as they can be compared to. My husband has had 2 also at the first place and wants to do it again where I went for the third. I would do it again tommorrow just because it is over pretty quick and the results are so worth it. But I got better results with the tighter coverage so I will definately go back to the second place. I just wish I would have gone there for the first 2. It really all comes down to how thin your skin is and your tolerance for discomfort. They say the more you have, the less pain you have each time as the skin thickens. |

Annie - Thanks for the quick response. I just have another question that I forgot to ask you earlier. Are you going multiple times because it takes 2-3 times to get rid of the same ones, or because you have new ones appear. I have very few and I'm wondering if they could be done with one treatment. Thanks again! |

I have quite a few allover my face. My husband goes for Rosacea. We were told in consultation that it takes 3-5 for best results for me and 5-7 in his case. Then you are advised to do upkeep once every one to 2 years as needed as new ones will appear but not as badly. Some veins/caps need multiple passes. You could just have one and even do spot treatments, but its best on the whole face for more even results. Also, the yag laser does larger more prominent veins in specific areas. My husband had that for ones on his nose that were tougher to treat. I would get recommendations for someone reputable in your area and get a consultation. You can always just try having the one and see if that gets the results you are looking for, that's the way I went into it. They wanted me to sign up for the whole 5 package but I wanted to try one at a time until I got the right results. |

I had some capillaries on my cheeks, not a real lot, and had laser treatment when visiting Australia about five years ago.
Can't remember for sure the name of the laser used but it may have been a pulsed dye laser (?)
I had great results and zero downtime. Had it done in the afternoon, and my face looked just a little bit flushed for a few hours. The next morning was back to normal, with the red spots all gone. I wish I had done it earlier! |
