Much to my annoyance, I have developed a brown pigmentation mark around each eye. One side is slightly worse than the other but they both look like dirty, brown smudges.
Would vitamin C serum help get rid of these marks? I'm halfway through my bottle of Vivier and as yet it doesn't seem to be making any difference to their appearance.
What product would help fade them?
I know that brown pigmentation can sometimes be a side effect when taking the contraceptive pill but I came off that years ago. It's probably just an age/genetic thing. I tend to freckle easily on my face and so maybe my skin is more prone to getting pigmentation problems. I imagine I can look forward to these stupid brown marks popping up all over my face as I get older.
(And before anyone mentions it - yes, I am using a sunscreen ) |

I was going to suggest something before I read your last line
I'm thinking maybe something along the lines of Skinceuticals Phyto+? It's supposed to get rid of hyperpigmentation and some have had good results with it (and i think some haven't).... |

Mabsy, I'm one of those who have had ZERO success with the Phyto +. Grrr.....
However, I have recently had a tremendous amount of success with the only product (after literally spending hundreds of dollars on lightening products, honest!) with Cosmelan 2. There's no HQ in it, and it is the only thing that has helped me remove I'd say 80% of my light brown patches on each cheek (diagnosed as melasma last year from years of sun abuse and hormone fluctuations - no BCP - was never on it!!!!) the downside is it's WAAAAYYYYY expensive, but I'd do it again in a minute with the results I've had - are you ready? It's $180.00. But the jar lasts quite a while. There is also a brand new product called whiterskin (at whiterskin.com) that also has no HQ, but a wonderful list of all natural ingredients that is being touted as THE brown discoloration remover. This is $40 a jar. The ingredients are very similar to Cosmelan 2 - better I'd say. Some people use it to lighten their overall skin (not me, I'm as fair as can be!)but it's also supposed to be effective for just hyperpigmentation. Once you've used the Cosmelan 2 for two weeks, you go on a once a day regimen or a couple of times a week, so I did just order the Whiterskin on the off days as it's pretty gentle to see if I can't get them completely gone. Also I'm still using sunblock everyday.
Some have reported peeling, itching, redness with Cosmelan 2 which I can't for the life of me figure out as I have super sensitive skin and I experienced NO side effects at all!
Let me know if I can be of any more help.

I had three freckles pop up on my cheekbone next to my eye and yes, I use super-duper sunscreens. I got a 20% TCA peel fromwww.platinumskincare.com and applied to each. The freckles are now gone and some slight pinkness remains but seems to be getting lighter each day. I also applied the TCA to my freckles on hands, arms, legs. Also got a good result. Though I think TCA can be extremely scary to use, I followed the directions exactly as given and it worked for me very well. I will probably wait another six weeks and then give it a go again on the freckles on my legs that lightened up quite a bit but didn't disappear completely. I have also been using my C+ Firming serum there and my LRP sunscreens. |

Try the Kinerase Eye Cream. This will also help fade pigmentation. I really like it's consistancy. |

How does the TCA peel compare to the glycolic.
I've been using about 20-30% glycolic acid peels on my hands arms and face. It has helped texture (and is likely making fine lines better)but did not remove spots. My skin tolerates this well. Is TCA stronger? |

I read on Dianayvonne, that to target sunspots with glycolic acid, you need to use 70% on the spots. Leave it for 6 mins., and 3 days in a row. TCA peels are much stronger than AHA or BHA peels. |

I keep saying this and I feel like a big bore, but Skinbio's Supercop x 2 is really, finally fixing my hyperpigmentation hyper-slowly, but hyper-surely and it's cheap as chips.
Get a sample from Dianayvonne for $5 and it'll last you several months |

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will look into some of those products.
I have been using a sample of the MD Formulations Vit A eye creme over the past week and I noticed this morning that one of the marks looked a bit lighter. Perhaps this is helping to fade them. I'm not really sure how deep these pigmentation marks can go and wasn't sure if glycolic acid would exfoliate enough layers to get rid of the discolouration. |

Mariav,
I am very interested in your suggestions to get rid of melasma. I suffer from that too, and tried many many products (including Phyto +) to no avail.
3 questions:
1) Did you use cosmelan 2 only on your melasma or everywhere?
2) What sunblock do you use?
3) Did you take MSM supplements?
Thanks,

Quacko!
So far C2 is the ONLY product that has nearly eradicated the melasma. Today was the first day in almost a year that I did not have to apply concealer before my mineral makeup. YAY!!!!
Although the C2 protocol tells you to apply to the entire face, I just used it on the melasma areas. Many who use it say their skin just gets better overall (i.e. pores smaller, acne clear, etc.)
I use Skinceuticals sunblock spf 30 - I know it's not as good as the European ones, I just haven't got around to it...
I tried MSM, but I couldn't tolerate the headaches - no matter how much water I drank, although maybe I didn't give it enough time!

Thanks Maria for your answers.
I went ahead and just purchased the whiterskin jar. Thought that $40.00 may be a good cheaper investment initially. If that does not work, then I will purchase Cosmelan 2.
As for sunblocks, I have used La Roche Posay Fluid Extreme. I noticed that it made my melasma worse, so I quit using it. Currently, I am using Avene 50+. It seems OK. |

Quacko, that's really weird. Why would the LRP make your melasma worse, do you have a theory? |

Hi Molly,
It is the strangest thing. After everyone recommended LRP, I bought and used it. It did not break me out, though I am quite oily. But I noticed within few days, that my melasma was darkening. I was not in the sun more, or used any different products, so I had to assume it was because of LRP.
I know it is very weird, since almost everyone has success with it. It could be because I am sensitive to chemical sunblock, I don't know.
I am almost tempted to "retry" the experiment, apply LPR and see what happens, but I am too scared to worsen my melasma. |

I know that you have said that you use sunscreen, and I am not sure if the problem you have is the same as what I had - I used to have darker pigmentation right along the upper lash line of each of my eyelids. Anyhow, this may be useless, but I started covering my entire eyelid, right up to the lashes with JI Pressed Base, which works as a physical sunscreen, and I no longer have marks. Personally, I find that with chemical sunscreens I still see pigment changes on my skin, but with physical sunscreens, no sun seems to get through at all. |

to prevent more from popping up, you should use a good eye cream with a high spf, love the clarins sun wrinkle control spf 30 eye cream. and yes, i think a vitamin C serum will help but you should really use that's made especially for the eyes like skinceuticals aox eye serum. hth |

Hi,
The ingredients for cosmelan mask are:
Aqua, Titanium Dioxide, Octyl Mthoxycinnamate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Paraffinum Liquidum, Azelaic Acid, Kojic Acid, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Phytic Acid, Edta, Ascorbic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate, Ceteareth-12, Parfum, Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinnone.
The ingredients for cosmelan 2 are:
Aqua, Titanium Dioxide, Octyl methoxycinnamate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Paraffinum Liquidum, Kojic Acid, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Phytic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate, Ceteareth-12, Parfum, Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinnone.
Can be used by who is breastfeeding.
Cannot be used by under 12 years old. Cannot be in contact with eyes and mouth.
So if you have hyperpigmentation under the eyes, I'd better use Radiance Eyelift, that also has Phytic Acid for pigmentation.
Hope this helps. |

I'm new here but on a search of "lightening melanasma" I found this spot.
After getting a tan one summer, the tan faded except for my cheeks (cheekbone down to bottom of my face), a line across my forehead, and on my upper lip (it looked like I had dirty or a mustache). I went to a dermatologist and he told me it was melanasma and gave me some cream. Well, the cream was successful for lightening the "mustache" but I had no luck with the other spots.
I've had these for over 10 years and I've been very self conscious since I first had them. I have not been out in the sun without super sun protection since.
I'm constantly looking for a foundation to cover them but I haven't had any luck.
I read some messages on suggestions to lighten spots but the descriptions didn't seem like exactly like mine.
I'm looking for any suggestions on hopefully getting rid of them but anything to just lighten them would be wonderful. I'm 35 (23 or 24 when they showed up) and I'm afraid that the older I get the more they will show.
Thank you in advance.
Kelly

I also recommend TCA peels from Platinum Skincare. They do work. I wrote about it on this thread: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=15268
I have managed to get rid of discolouration pigments on my face which includes freckles and some brown spotting from suntanning in my teens. I also use Retin-A and sometimes Copper Peptides (Super Cop) but I found the greatest improvement came after I started using TCA peels. You can buy a sample from them that gives you 3-4 peels to see if you like it. I don't work for them in case it sounds like that.
I should add if you decide to buy TCA peels don't do what I did and think of saving money and buying on ebay. They are watered down beyond belief despite what they say. I purchased from 2 different sellers 20% TCA and it was weaker than the 12% from Platinum. I felt (when it was on) and saw the difference! Should you buy from PSC I would recommend starting with 12% and working up. You can always do multiple layers with their peels and they are very effective for both pigmentation and light wrinkling. I started with 12% and now 8 months later am using 16% (they sell 12,16 and 20%) Please read the thread I mentioned above if you want details. |
