My sister went for a facial and massage at a spa for the first time last Friday. She emailed today saying her skin feels sticky even after several showers (she worksout a lot) and her face is really greasy. The weather has been quite hot the last few days but I think she feels her skin is feeling unusual.
I've never personally had this reaction. Not sure if her skin is reacting badly or possibly purging? Her skin is mature and she's a smoker. I don't want her first visit to a spa to give her icky memories. |

My first facial was a bit of a nightmare. I warned the woman that I had very sensitive skin, and she said that wouldn't be a problem. We got to the purifying mask, and I told her my skin was starting to burn. She said that was normal, this was a warming mask. Two more minutes and I demanded that she remove it, because my face was on fire. My skin was really red and hot to the touch. She said she'd never had anyone react like me, and that's why she didn't really listen when I first told her it was burning. Hmph.
Sorry, that's not the same reaction as your sister had, but I would have thought that she would have felt more of an immediate reaction? I'm no expert, however. |

yes, it's possible.
if the products are not suitable for her skin or it wasn't done well. |

I've had 4-5 facials and broke out after every one so I quit getting them (and these are salon facials not microdermabrasion/med facials). Now I have a skinmasters facial done from my med/spa and I dont' breakout. They take a steel spatula w/ ultrasonic waves and gently scrape off the dead skin using vibration. Then they apply a SkinMedica Recovery mask with steam for 2 min., rinse and apply Obagi Active to soothe. Works wonders, my skin stays calm and hydrated, and is great for rosacea/sensitive skin.
I also get massages every 4-6 months and my neck, hairline and chest always break out. Either the oils or the friction, I'm not sure. |

I'm glad even through a not so great experience, you were all able to give facials another try.
In the two or three facials so far, I've always taken care not to have a special event the very next day, just in case! Hopefully my sister won't be turned off. I didn't know what to say since she had the same dermalogica tx done by the same person I had the previous week. She emailed back yesterday saying she tried a different cleanser and it helped. I wonder if her body still feels sticky.
AnnieR, the skinmasters facial sounds great. |

It is and I'm having another one next week. It's great for getting rid of dead skin since my skin is too sesnsitve for dermaplaning or microwdermabrasions anymore. |

Just curious, did your sister inform her esthetician or whomever was doing the facial, of any skin condition or skin type she has?
I've only had one facial in my life, which was done less than a month ago (on special, couldn't resist =D). I had to fill out a form listing the cleansers, moisturizers and any medication I use. I have very sensitive skin which started to redden during my facial massage. But the lady used products suited to my skin type and she did so with an awareness of what I use on my skin and the minor problems I have with it from time to time. |

She did fill out a few questionnaires (massage, facial, pedicure) before her services began. It's the first time she had ever gone for a facial and massage so other than an absence of any actual skin conditions, I'm not sure if she knew what skin type she had or knew how her skin would respond.
As long as this doesn't deter her from future spa visits or from trying dermalogica products. She was typed as normal to oily. And her skin felt 'greasy' even after washing for a couple day afterwards. Not sure what was happening?? |

I have had a bad reaction after i had a facial, that is why i don't go for the free make overs or have facials. You never know what products they are using or how sanitary. I just don't take the chance. |

Oh dear, that's a shame then. It's supposed to be such a rejuvenating experience and she ends up reacting like that...horrible. |
