ok, I will ask for forgivness before I start because I know I'm going to offend someone, but my little green eyed monster is a mite jealous and needs to vent a bit.
I'm a little frustrated. I've noticed that since EDS started offering discounts that new members are posting anything and everything in order to get the coveted 15% discount. People who joined 1 or 2 months ago are already in the 300's?! I have felt the jealous tinge lately and have even posted a few of my own one line posts to help boost my number (which I frown on and not proud of BTW). I have tried to post only when I can contribute or if I have a question, but I've noticed that recently some of the latest weekly winners have all joined this year and have crazy high posts!
I don't discourage new members from posting, but please don't post just to raise your numbers.
I used to gauge posts by the advice and number of posts to help with credablity, but now I look at the date and I found people reviewing after 1 night of using a product? How accurate can the advice be? I have found it frustrating and have recently run searchs on my favorite experts. That way I can weed thru and get advice I find useful. I have lost interest in just sufering EDS. Which is what I used to love to do. Many new topics are just not helpful or too short to be of interest.
I know I'm being petty and shallow, but I need to vent so I can let it go. Lots of the newbies are sweet, but I've come across too many posts of people admitting to posting not for content but for numbers. It is frustrating.
I may be the only one on here who feels this way and I will probably get slammed by many on here, but as I near my year mark and have not hit the 200th post my frustration is high tonight to find the weekly winner joined only a month ago. This just reminded my of my jealous episode earlier when dear ParisTroika won after being on a week or two.
I have nothing against todays winner (as I can't remember the name) or even recent winners; however, I ran a search and I feel justified on my pettiness. 3 out of the 4 winners for the Fridays in July have been won by newbies.
I just did a search on Tuesdays and wow...I went farther back than just July and like only two senior members won since May.
I'm jealous and admit it <stamping foot>.
I know... more posts increases the chance of winning the weekly drawing. I guess even a sweet gesture as the discounts can have a negative impact.
I'm done ranting. After a good nights sleep I'll probably feel better. |

Ah its okay deanne123 - in my experience the occasional rant is good for ya .
But, if you win the next voucher, then we'll know for sure that the drawing is fixed and we're gonna have to call the BUNKO squad |

I can't help but feel I'm one of the newbies you're talking about since I have written very many posts and have only joined a little over a month
In all respects I think you have a right to be angry, even though I'm new I noticed those monosentence replies and duplicate posts. But I don't think all newbies are like this - I, for one, have only posted questions or replies that are hopefully helpful.
I actually have never thought that posting MORE would increase my chance of the draw - I did win though the first week of July. But it wasn't because I purposely posted a lot - actually I have yet to use my voucher since I am still using up my prior EDS orders.
Even though I'm a newbie I actually quite support your rant up there and I certainly hope you win that voucher soon! |

Nothing wrong with brief one-liners. Simplicity is key, even Einstein thought so.
It sounds to me like you're just jealous. |

I am newbie too. I have to admit that the discount factor was the inital incentive for me to start posting. I have been coming to the forum for about a year, I very much enjoyed reading all the posts and they have given me many very good tips. I guess the discount was meant to encourage more people to paticipate the forum. I make to the point that I don't just post random posts. |

Do not be ashamed to post what's on your mind! This is a forum and I'm not afraid to provoke discussions and I'm certainly not afraid to post too much as there, imo, can never be enough!
Imagine you make a thread and nobody replies. Wouldn't you rather have a brief response than nothing at all? Why should everyone feel pressured into posting long-winded novels? |

Deanne123- I read your post quite thoroughly & I agree with you on many of the points you made. You'll most likely think that I'm one of the newcomers with too many postings, but I feel differently about that: I read postings from EDS for about 3/4 of a year before I ever registered. I had never been on a chat line before & felt quite intimidated by the whole thing. When I finally got up the nerve to post, I tryed to find topics that I had some insight on, and didn't try to overwelm the members with all my petty questions. After awhile I got in conversations with some of the members & we had a great time going back and forth! Before I knew it, I had gotten to the "preferred" status, but it has made me feel more like I'm part of the group than what I would receive as a discount. In only about 4 months I reached the 250+, but I felt I got there because I was interested in the topics & care about all the concerns of our forum members. To me, this forum has opened up a whole new world of friends! As long as the members want me here & welcome my input, I will keep posting, cuz...I just luv you guys!
BTW, you probably saw my name as a Friday winner in June. Sorry. |

I honestly thought a member had to be here awhile to win vouchers. I was shocked to win one.
And I haven't been posting alot because of discounts, honestly with the amount I want, I can't afford it anyway! Discount or not!...I've had so much to talk about, especially since after I put in an order to EDS for the Decleor ylang ylang (recommended on another forum) and my other products I've used.
I don't force my posts...meaning, I don't "make something up" just to post. I've been a skincare junkie for years now and am finally in good company
I'm active on all forums I join...I think that is why I'm a member of so few...I only join if I know I'm going to be active.
I think all newbies are more active at first...its new, exciting, and you find you've got alot of questions and alot to talk about. But some slow down sooner than others...for some they might quickly get 100 posts, then it will take them several months to do fifty.
Others are so prolific they post ALOT and always post alot.
I don't know...just my two cents...well, more like $1.34 |

While I was reading this post, I remembered that there are other sites on the web that have the 'moderators' watch for stuffing posts and delete them. This seems like a logical thing to do, imho just a thought, lol.
Ive been a member...I dont even know, maybe a few months, and I don't post too much. I post when I have something to say or am wondering about something. Since I'm a college student, I don't have too much time nor the money to buy as many products and keep reviewing them. Thus, my posts are kept to a minnimum. Hopefuly, one day, I will be able to afford some of these things to be able to compare and review, having me post more. However, until that time comes, I'll be posting every now an again whenever I feel I can give some valuble advice.
And with newbies winning, you of course have a right to be a bit envious. I'd be upset too if I had been on the forums for over a year and have never won a drawing while someone who just joined a week ago won one.
Anyways, just my thoughts .
(Please pardon my spelling ).

Hi Deanne,
I guess the first thing I want to say is, I admire you for putting your thoughts and feelings out there. I’m imagining that this newbie winning today was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back, eh? Just so you know, I am not offended by your post.
Re: increasing your chances of winning the gift certificate the more you post – is this really so? I thought it was random, as long as you participated...
Here’s my take on things. I offer it merely as a sharing of my perspective.
I joined EDS for 2 main reasons - to be able to get answers to questions I have, and to be part of this virtual community.
I read a lot more posts than I make – I’m not as knowledgeable about skincare and make-up as a lot of people here. Sometimes the posts I make are long, and sometimes they’re brief. Most of the time I have to edit my posts because I tend to be long-winded (hey, don’t anyone use that against me in the future! )
Something I post just a line or two just to thank or acknowledge someone because I know I appreciate it when others do that with me, or sometimes just to interact with someone who’s conversation and “company” I enjoy.
I'll end here – I’ve got to get up in 4 hours!
P.S. I’m glad to know you have nothing personal against me – and I hope you’ll remember my name now
Have a nice weekend, Deanne – and everyone else here too!

is there such thing as forum etiquette? i didnt know that. i wish i was one of the new members that won the voucher this month lol.
i think it comes down to how or what you learned what forums are and how to interact on them.
all the forums i post on most people use interactivly, as in back and forth posting, i think that is normal. but because eds awards discounts for more posts i see how you can get mad at a lot of posts. but i think, share the wealth! be happy! you are also entitled to post whatever you want (as long as its meant to be relevent) and get the discount as well! be happy for everyone else as they are entitled to this right also.
i think everyone posts with honest and good intentions, it just may not seem that way to some. also, since theres moderators on the board, i think they will do something about this if it was seriously a problem.
its like, do you use the internet for: fun/interactive/learning or.. strictly for learning and no interaction. i think the peeve is just on your online style. |

Like most others, I never joined in anticipation to win the voucher (because simply I just don't believe in luck?) and the discounts weren't even existent back then..
But like you said, it seems like lots of newbies win the voucher? Well I won mine within the first 2 months and nothing's come my way since then.
The drawing system is supposed to be randomised, I remember there being an old post about this too.. So perhaps it's just something to do with numbers, and new members sometimes tide over the existing ones?? |

I won my voucher about 8 months after I joined. And yes, I was so jealous when I see some newbies won the voucher. After a while I don't check any winning voucher post anymore.

I don't begrudge anyone being lucky enough to win.
When I 1st joined EDS it seemed the same person would win both 'random' drawings back to back or within a month or so.
I too noticed as of late it seems the new members seem to be winning.
I feel EDS is being extremely generous to even offer this bonus - but I do wonder about the 'randomness' of it.
Just my observation.... |

Well I've been a member for a year and I haven't won a voucher yet either, but I have gone through periods of not being active on the boards.
Though as everyone else has said already, of course it would be lovely to win but I think the discount in itself is an amazing offer. |

Regarding the weekly draw--
Like some of the posters above, I don't know how it works. Is it tied to post frequency? Perhaps someone can explain. Here's what I hope: They just take all the registered members (who have posted in a reasonable amount of time -- like the past month -- so we know they're still here), put their names in a hat, and draw at random. No post frequency involved.
Regarding newbies with high post counts--
I'm sure deanne sees the distinction between the members making quality contributions (she did refer to Paris as "dear" ) and the ones padding their post counts. And we're all human. It's fine to cheat/pad a little bit, like all the congratulations-for-winning posts. But it should be kept to a minimum. Because...
Regarding "useless" posts/comments--
More information does not equate better. Not when that information is useless. Useless posts and comments clog the forum, making useful information harder and more time-consumming to find (and we all know the forum search isn't the best).
This is a public forum. And as with any public space, there are still unstated rules of common courtesy. If you want to say whatever you want, whenever you want, without regard for how your comments might affect the enjoyment/usability of others, you need to get a blog.
I hope I haven't sounded too harsh. I'll end with a smiley . |

As an old lag who has kind of returned here for the summer, Voucher draws always used to be random, to the point that someone could win two weeks running (Winnie ). so posting like a demon gets you nothing but the discount.
I would think if EDS thought that people were posting just to get the discount and were loosing money at the expense of the forum getting filled with rubbish, then they'd stop it. Having been a very active member and then dropping out and coming back again, I don't notice any difference in the quality of posts at all.
Back when I was very active (and there was no discount), lots of us (me included) posted short stupid posts. Banter is what makes this site so good. If you don't like banter then go to smartskincare.com or the skincareboard.com.

Just to clarify, ladies, the draw is random and whether you're established here or new does not make a difference. Everybody who has posted on the forum in the last week is entered into the draw. Sometimes, we do "special" draws or some sort of competition (one coming up within a week btw ) because now with so many people on the board there are smaller chances of winning a voucher. However, I'm curious as to the observation that new members seem to win more often - just looking at the last few months of the skincare forum this does not appear to be the case....
In terms of filler posts - I try to get rid of as many duplicate posts as I can. However, I do not delete one-liners. Sometimes a simple "yes" or "no", is helpful and is in itself a contribution. If I, say, started deciding which posts like that should be deleted then this is a very subjective thing and you could disagree with my decision and then you'd be unhappy because you'd feel that I was regulating the discussions... Product reviews are the same - there have been a few lately that have been very short and simply did not have enough detail. But what do you do? It is still someone's opinion and if you have one person judging the reviews then again you get problems.
Btw, I have been guilty of reviewing products after just one use. I believe, for example, that the Valmont Renewing Pack and possibly the Dr Hauschka mascara have been two of those. But, sometimes, when I try a product and really *really* love it I just have to share it with you guys ASAP |

I too must be one of those "newbies" who makes too many posts as I've only joined the forum about a month ago and already have over 100 posts.
However, I started ACTUALLY BUYING products from EDS back in June 2002, or possibly earlier, but that's as far as my records go back.
I wasn't even aware of the discount system until after I joined the forum and still don't really know how it works, although I am apparently entitled to 10%.
IMO we should be thanking EDS for creating and maintaining this forum where we can discuss skincare and other interests. It's probably the friendliest, most polite message board I've seen anywhere on the net. Thank you EDS! Praise is due, not criticism! |

The newbie random posting thing was quite striking to me. I was away for months and came back after the discount. There are definitely *some* newbies who just go down a line of threads posting one liners for no good reason and it's not banter. It did irritate me a bit at first because it's like spam, it's purely to get some financial benefit - a discount. But...It's not ALL newbies. It doesn't happen all the time and I would agree you can't delete it. You just get used to it in the end like most things in life. But it is there. |

What Molly said plus, you don't want this place to be unwelcoming to newbies and as appletini pointed out some newbies may have been long standing loyal customers of eds so why SHOULDN"T they get a discount? |

I completely agree with everything that Candy said. When I first came on here I really thought it was based on how long you'd been here since the long-term members always seemed to win. I didn't know about the EDS discount until several months after I joined and my joining wasn't based on that at all. I just loved the discussions here and couldn't stand to not jump in any longer (I had lurked for around 3-4 months before I joined)!
Like Sel, I too have been here just about a year and have never won the voucher. Unfortunately, I have to admit that there have been a few times lately that I have been jealous of the winners. I don't post here to win the voucher, but after seeing so many new people win and never having won myself, I'm ashamed to admit I've let it bother me at times. I do think though that it's such a wonderful gift that EDS offers and since I don't want to be petty, I just try to overlook it and be grateful that I have such wonderful friends here. THAT is the true reward for me! |

I am yet another one of those frustrating newbies who won the $50 voucher last week. LOL I never thought I would win at all, never mind so soon. In fact I was greatly surprised and overjoyed.
So do I personally post for the discounts and possible voucher wins? Hell no! Sure the discounts are a great incentive and a fantastically sweet reward for our contributions, but let's face it, if any of us were really after the coveted 15% discount, I'm sure many of us could hit 250 posts in one day if we really wanted to. That being said, I eagerly await the day I can call myself a "preferred member".
I try to contribute to topics that interest me and ones where I think my additions will help others, and I appreciate when other members (new or old) do the same. It takes me 20 - 30 min on avg just to post one reply as I read it over and over and edit it a hundred times until I think it's the most thoughtful repsonse I can give. I've hit that "preview" button way more times than I've hit "submit". (I'm anal, what can I say? ) I love it when someone replies with a "thankyou" or when someone gains a little knowledge from something I've written. It makes me feel like I'm really helping out. Sure I've started or contributed to a few useless, unrelated skin care topics in the EDS lounge to add a little fun and frivolity, but isn't that what that forum is for? Right now I have lots of spare time and I check out the forum at least twice a day so this gives me a great opportunity to share my thoughts. But I READ the posts way more often than I actually post myself. I enjoy reading and posting in this forum because of the giving and sharing qualities I see from so many here. We all have great advice and a variety of info and help to contribute, as we are all so different and come from many walks of life. This is one of many attractions of joining the EDS forum.
I can understand being a little jealous, whether a newbie or an oldie wins, but I CHOOSE to be happy for the winner instead. Sending good things out will truly attract good things back. Being positive about it goes so much further and I think it's being truly happy for the other winners that triggered the universe to send a little something my way (I was having the most terrible week that week and it was the one thing that made me smile.) So my advice to those who haven't won yet is be patient. Keep contributing whatever you can and wish to and don't look at the number of posts sitting under your name and the name of others.
We're all here to escape the daily blahs, to laugh a little and learn, and to form a great community, and no number of discounts and freebies can replace that. |

I have to admit that I have questioned whether or not the drawings for vouchers are honestly random. But, although I do have my doubts, I don't follow it all that closely, and more importantly, I don't really mind at all. I find both the vouchers and the member discounts to be INCREDIBLY generous of EDS and I don't think there's anything else out there that compares to it.
What does REALLY bother me though are what I consider to be absurd and thoughtless posts by some newbies. My complaint isn't that they post just to accumulate enough posts for a discount - it never occurred to me that that is what was going on. I just find it incredibly annoying when someone posts a question about something that has been discussed AT LENGTH over and over because they were too lazy to use the (very good) "search" function. Often, I DO post a reply saying (diplomatically, of course ) USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!
The other thing that drives me CRAZY is when someone posts a question like "what are the pros & cons of using sunscreen?" If someone honestly wants the answer to something like that, they should google it and do some reading.
If people are trying to run up posts to get a discount, it's silly and, ultimately, counterproductive. It will, inevitably, lead to the discontinuation of the policy. But it's hard to control that kind of thing. I think that I post an awful lot because I have frequent periods of downtime at work and I like to browse the board during those times. But, I've been posting for quite some time and I'm absolutely shocked to see people who have been posting for one month with posts equal to what I've posted in a year Jesus, you have to LIVE here to achieve that. The discounts ARE great, but hardly worth THAT much effort.
People will do what they will. I think at one time or another, any open board has to contend with people who, either for lack of experience or consideration, don't think before they post. Unfortunately, it can, and very often does, really clutter up the board |
