Last week I had a follow up kidney CT scan as the previous scan 8 months ago showed a possible cyst. (My Dr. decided to order a pelvic CT exam at the same time.) The next day my Doctor's secretary called to say I had to see my OBG/GYN Dr. as soon as possible because my right ovary appears to have lesions. I asked her if I could make the appt early the following week and she said "no" you need to see her ASAP! My heart almost stopped after hearing this.
I met with my OBG/GYN Dr. the next day (Friday) and after reading the CT results and doing an internal exam (she couldn't feel the ovaries) she said the Right ovary has to be removed within the month. If the CA125 blood test comes back abnormal, then I have to have the surgery next week and recommends removing both ovaries.
Has anyone had their ovaries removed? What are the benefits/drawbacks of having a healthy ovary removed. I know this will put me in menopause immediately, but was almost there anyway.
Thanks, ladies.

The more research I do the more I am inclined to keep the healthy ovary so replacement therapy would not be necessary. Of course, if it is cancerous, then they both come out without question.
I will know more this week when the CA125 results come back.
Thanks for your support. |

Penelope please go & see an another dr. as well.
some 3,5 years ago my then dr. advised a total hystherectomy. i had the apointment for surgery already when i went to see an another gyn., who told me that there is absolutely no reason for such an "irrevocable" solution and the problem is to be solved with a minor surgery. That's what i did and i've had no problems since then.
I keep my fingers crossed for you ! i know how difficult the following few days are for you, whilst the situation is so unsure |

You can live quite normally with one ovary. If both ovaries are removed because of cysts/disease etc then your uterus should be checked as well.
I had a full hysterectomy including both ovaries and the specialist used keyhole surgery. I was only in hospital for 3 days and after taking it easy for a month (and daily tablet of eostrogen) I never felt better and wished I had had it done years earlier.
Best of luck and I do hope that if you are young then it is only one ovary but just make sure they check all the rest. |

Hi Penelope
I had my right ovary removed 5 years ago, when I was 41. There was a tumour-like growth on the side of the ovary (but thank god, it turned out benign). I had to make a decision - the surgeon told me that he could try to remove half of the ovary and save some
I was then 41 with 2 kids. So I thought - what the heck - remove the entire ovary cos I could not imagine having to do it twice (should the remaining part turn malignant).
To answer your concerns, my periods returned to normal (1 month after surgery) & is now very regular - every month. In fact, I had an *accident* when I got pregnant - at 43!!
Sounds like TMI - erh - the bottom line - I have had no major problems after my surgery. In fact, I feel better. Looking back, I think the growth on the ovary gave my bloatness, heavy periods, etc.
HTH

Thanks Jenny for the info. I am still waiting to receive info on the blood work and a surgery date. Nerve racking just waiting and waiting. At this point I am inclined to keep the good ovary, just as you did. I really appreciate the feedback. |
