I'm sure many of you have heard about Lumixyl, which was proven to be effective on Melasma in a VERY small pilot study (5 people), and larger studies are now underway.

I took advantage of the 25% off at Lovelyskin, and ordered a bottle, so I will be reporting in on it's performance.

Quote:
Lumixyl™ Topical Brightening Crčme is a physician-dispensed cosmetic and can be used alone or in combination with other treatments or devices such as tretinoin, laser resurfacing and Dermalinfusion™, respectively, to diminish dark spots, uneven pigmentation and improve overall skin tone.

About Lumixyl
Lumixyl™ is a revolutionary peptide technology developed by researchers at Stanford University to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, including:
•Age spots
•Sun Spots
•Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
•Uneven skin tone
•Photodamage

Preliminary clinical results are being evaluated in large confirmatory trials and demonstrate that topical use of Lumixyl™ visibly improves mild to moderate hyperpigmentation with excellent volunteer satisfaction in as little as 8 weeks.

In addition to its efficacy, Lumixyl™ is the only skin brightener to offer all of the following benefits in a single product:
•Non-irritating or allergenic
•Non-toxic
•Safe for all skin types
•Safe for prolonged use
•Easily degraded by the skin
•Will not increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun
•Stabilized so that it will not lose potency or turn brown after opening
•A luxurious, moisture-rich texture

Here is the detailed version of the pilot clinical study:

The directions on the Lovelyskin site say to use the Lumixyl 1x daily at night, while the bottle says to use it 2x daily (as did the clinical study). Needless to say, I will be using it 2x day! I guess that bottle will now last half as long as I had anticipated. Rolling Eyes

Product Update:

I used it this evening...you use a very small amount (pea-sized) for the whole face and it spreads easily. The texture is actually very light, and absorbed immediately with no greasy feel. I then layered my Young Pharmaceuticals Retinol product over it.

I will be using the Lumixyl on my face and chest, and the Vivite Vibrance on my hands and arms.

The price point of the 2 products is about the same, but 1x day usage of the Vivite makes my face very red, which is not exactly the look I'm going for. Embarassed

Bethany, does the product have another active besides the Licorice root extract?

I'm looking for something safer to replace my HQ so I'll be waiting for your results anxiously!

Here's are some things on licorice extract:

The safest pigment-lightening agents with the fewest side effects are the licorice extracts. It is for this reason that licorice extract is the most commonly used agent in cosmetics for brightening skin. Licorice extract can be incorporated into facial foundations or moisturizers. In addition, the licorice extract has topical antiinflammatory properties theoretically helpful in decreasing skin redness and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. The active agents are known as liquiritin and isoliquertin, which are glycosides containing flavonoids. Liquiritin induces skin lightening by dispersing melanin. It is typically applied to the skin in a dose of 1 g per day for 4 weeks to see a clinical result; however, the extract is quite expensive, and the concentration used in most cosmetics is modest.

Dermatol Ther. 2007 Sep-Oct;20(5):308-13.

--------------------------

Licorice extract is the most commonly used ingredient in cosmetics for lightening the skin.57 The active agents in licorice are glabridin, licochalcone A, and liquiritin. Licorice extracts have antiinflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects. They inhibit melanogenesis and can be used for the treatment of sensitive and irritated skin.[58], [59] and 60] A study performed on 20 subjects with melasma who applied a liquiritin cream at 1 g/d for 4 weeks showed satisfactory to excellent results: pigmentation intensity was markedly reduced in 70% of liquiritin-treated subjects compared with control patients.

Semin Cutan Med Surg. 2009 Jun;28(2):77-85.

I thought Lumixyl was based on an oligopeptide?

I'm so clueless!! Laughing

I just read the ingredients from the lovely skin website and the only anti-melasma thing I could find was the licorice root!!

But then I read their publications and patents and I guess the "Decapeptide 12" is their peptide.

They do have a published small trial on this in a peer-reviewed journal which is very encouraging... and the licorice root extract doesn't hurt either.

I am liking it thus far...it leaves very little residue and is perfect to layer on first. I think it would also be great under foundation, MMU, etc.

There is ZERO smell too, which I like. Very Happy

Not at the moment...I'm a tad concerned about using it in an undiluted manner after hearing feedback from the manufactuer. But I'll figure out something to do with the 4oz I just bought, lol.

Just a quick update on using the Lumixyl after about a week...

- Definitely very easy to use and soaks in completely
- A little goes a LONG way...I can see one container lasting quite a long time.
- Using it 2x day does cause some redness to appear in my cheeks, though you can see the exact line where I stop applying it as I get close to my eyes, so that is a little disconcerting. (but it is no more red than when I use the Vivite Vibrance 1x day)
- If I cut back to 1x day, the redness disappears, though I'm not sure that is enough to get the benefits

I'm going to try and stick it out at 2x day and see if the redness diminishes over time...maybe as I get more acclimated.

Grrr....I have HUGE red welt thing on the side of one cheek. And pretty much the only thing I have been using over the last week+ is the Lumixyl. Confused

The red welt is sometimes itchy, and does not look like a zit at all. But I will undoubtedly have some PIH from it, since I am very prone to that. Sad

Right now it is too early to say that it is the Lumixyl, but if any more pop up, I am going to stop using it.

Bethany....I'm so sorry to hear about this setback. I've been eagerly watching this thread as hyperpigmentation is my main beauty issue (and a big one at that.) Please keep us posted. I'm basically at a loss as to what to do about my hyperpigmentation. Nothing helps. I've spent too much money on products that just don't work or completely irritate my skin.

Just wanted to let you know that your progress is being watched.

Ditto. I am sorry to hear about the welt, as well. I also am watching to see your progress on the Lumixyl, as I battle the age spots.

Thanks. Smile

I'm wondering if it is a bug bite...if it was an allergic reaction, you would think I would have more of them!

I do agree that one red welt is strange. When a product irritates my skin there are usually several red spots. I think you'll be able to tell in a day or two because if it is the product causing the red welt then surely you'll get more if you continue to use it.

I'm hoping it's the bug!!!

So the giant red welt was a spider bite. Shock

I just assumed it was a zit until the lady at the place where I pick up my lunch salad each day asked about the "big ring like Saturn" around the red spot. Sure enough, there was (and still is, sigh) a ring the size of a quarter around the welt. But it is subsiding fortunately.

I did note today, however, that my pigmentation looked a bit lighter. I'll be keeping an eye on things over the next few days and see if I still feel that way. Right now I am only using the Lumixyl and some SA pads each day, so if there is any change it will be due to the Lumixyl!

The smaller spots on my face are definitely looking lighter, which is surprising because I am only a couple of weeks into this, and am really only using it 1x a day (instead of 2x as recommended).

I am watching a couple of bigger spots that are a result of PIH...I'm not sure that it will work on those or not, but I guess we'll see. Of course, if I got rid of all the little spots, I'd still be happy.

Bethany, that is such great news!!! I'm looking forward to more updates, but it looks very promising right now. I have extremely sensitive skin so I like the fact that your red welt was only a spider bite, and that there really seems to be no irritation so far. I'd love to get rid of all of my hyperpigmentation. I feel cursed Bad Grin

I read this in New Beauty mag, but I just got the newsletter from Obagi and thought this was interesting for anyone who had melasma.

"Melasma may be superficial or deep within the dermis. One of the
easiest ways to determine how deep your melasma goes is to
stretch the skin. If you stretch out the discoloration and it appears
lighter, then the pigmentation is superficial. If it appears darker, then
the pigmentation is dermal. Superficial pigmentation can be treated
using medical grade products. Dermal pigmentation requires topical creams,
and peels or lasers, or a combination of both to sucessfully treat
pigmentation."

I had read that as well. Unfortunately, due to the location of mine, I can't really assess that results of that test myself. I may get my derm to do it (if I remember!) next time I go.

But based on how long I have been trying to get rid of mine, I am quite certain it is dermal.

I tried it on the spots on my cheeks, but I really can't tell any difference, and I am not sure if that only applies to melasma or not!
