On a whim, I recently bought the Tweezerman Four-Way Buffer. I'm so accustomed to having to spend wads of cash to get products that perform well that I wasn't expecting too much from the Tweezerman tool since I'd only paid $1.99USD.
Well, happily, I was surprised. It proved to be easy-to-use, and I've been thoroughly pleased with the results. It smoothed out the ridges in my nails and left them with a subtle satiny shine. This was exactly the effect I was looking for: well-kept and professional-looking nails without nail polish. (I can't seem to keep polish on my fingernails, perhaps because I wash my hands so many times during the course of the day.)
Given the cost and size of the Tweezerman buffer, I'm planning to buy a bunch and keep one wherever I'm likely to use it: in the car, in my handbag, in my desk, in my travel bag, and so on.
The only drawback is that the Four-Way Nail Buffer isn't among the Tweezerman products that EDS offers. (I got mine from drugstore.com, one of my current sources for Weleda products.) |

| This may be a silly question, but is this buffer rectangular and hence the four sides? I.e. do you use each side for a different purpose and in order or is it a "4 in 1" buffer where it does all (gets rid of ridges, cleans surface, glosses, etc) in one go? |

| It's the former. The buffer itself is flat; looks rather like a regular nail file. Each side then has two surfaces. Three of the surfaces are for buffing, and the fourth is an emery board. The buffing surfaces are numbered, and you use them progressively. The first smoothes out ridges, the second smoothes and adds a bit of gloss, then the third polishes the nails to the satiny finish. |

I use a very similar system, and I find it very helpful. I am not much for fussing with my nails (since I work in a laboratory and have my hands in gloves a good part of the day). But using a buffing system similar to the Tweezerman 4 in 1, has kept my nails and cuticles shiny and healthy without a lot of fuss or money. And I love the natural look.
The system is simple. First you file, then use the first, coarser buffer in a circular motion over the top of the entire nail. This buffs out the ridges and "bumps". The use the second buffer in a similar fashion to smooth the nail. The third buffer is also used in a circular, polishing motion, to give a high shine to the entire nail. After I do this, I carefully wash my hands, apply my favorite lotion and cuticle oil, and - VIOLA! - I have natural, shiny, healthy looking nails.
A word of caution - only use the first buffer once a month. Using it too often may weaken the nail.

| I think most 4 way buffers work the same, try also use it to file the tip of your nails as a final finishing touch after clipping/filing with emeary boards, this sort of seals the tip of nails to prevent from splitting or peeling. |

I have bought 4 way buffers at the dollar store thar worked great too. I don't remember the brand name, but the package was cellophane with pink and white on it. (Of course after I opened the package I threw the wrapper away.)
I love how these buffers make your nails shine. I am the worst at keeping my nails painted, and these buffers manage to keep my fingers looking somewhat professional. |
