Hello dear ladies,
My hubby is currently using vaseline to keep his skin moisturized and his eczema at bay. Unfortunately, most creams and lotions we might use (and believe me I have suggested)have had adverse effects. As vaseline works, my goal is to find him a cream or lotion that is almost purely vaseline based but not quite as shiny since that is what seems to work for him and his only complaint is the shine. Some people say that a product called "aqueous cream BP" may produce an irritating reaction. These are the ingredients:
Purified Water, Petrolatum, Emulsifying wax BP, Mineral Oil, Phenoxyethanol
Can anyone tell me which one of these ingredients is the culprit? Also, has anyone with facial eczema specifically used Eucerin cream, which looks similar, with any luck? Thanks so much! |

| I've converted to more natural/organic skincare in recent years, but if you insist on using petroleum oil based products for your husband's eczema, then I would definitely recommend Avene recovery face cream and body lotion. I remember I had excellent result with these products when I suffered from flaky, itchy skin with eczema several years back. Very moisturising, yet non-greasy. hth~ |

Prevex is petrolatum spun with some kind of wax, it's thicker, but not as greasy or shiney.
i haven't tried eucerin, but i've been very very tempted lately. |

Epaderm is good, same consistancy as Vaseline, it's paraffin based. Though still quite shiny. I've got dermatatis and I didn't find Eucerin any help, especially when it was at it's worst.
I've tried Aqueous cream and had no reaction to it, but of course everyone is different. I found coal tar based products to be most effective for me. |

| Wonderful! Everyone, thanks so much for your input! This is exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for. My hubby is specifically suffering from a recurring atopic eczema due to cat allergies so prevention is key. I really want to help him as he is so good about us having a kitty. |

Hey Coll - I made a mix for 1 of the girls at work 2 year old daughter and she is loving it, actually they both are. 2 yr old says, no more oowwie.
It's EO's & Jojoba oil. My thinking is eventually the petroleum is gonna start playin havoc with his pores. |

Eucerin makes a product exacly like Vaseline minus the shiny film. It's called Aquaphor Original formula ointment. I'm reading off the ingredient list:
Petrolatum
mineral oil
mineral wax
wool wax alcohol |

Hi ya Candy-Girl! Thanks for jumping in! Glad you helped the little one, so many benefit from your generosity! Unfortunately we tried the jojoba oil and essential oils contribute to his flare ups. I know, I know  We've already gone the all natural route. Believe it or not, even pure HA irritates him. The only thing he can tolerate so far is vaseline, almost everything else that is supposed to be moisturizing has the opposite effect, including specific eczema creams, and we are endlessly frustrated by this. He has not yet tried mineral oil or paraffins.
Rufus, the aquafor sounds like what we are looking to try next. I'm going to try and find him a sample. |

| My derm suggested Aquafor as well and it works great on other areas of my body, but on my face it is simply too greasy for me. I'm having a terrible outbreak right now. My tendency is to get it between my upper lip and my nose. Not a pretty site! |

| On Makeup Alley, a number of people have found relief from eczema - type symptoms with Crème de la Mer, which has mineral oil. Downside is the price, but, some reviewers say that it is the only thing to work for them. |

I've mixed aquaphor with other stuff to make skin balms. For some people aquaphor is the only thing that works. |

Another vote for Aquaphor. I've used it successfully on my hand eczema and my son uses it on the eczema on his arms, legs and neck.
We haven't tried the Aqueous Base cream but the Avene Trixera and Eucerin Original both have ingredients that made our symptoms worse. The Aquaphor is kind of greasy but less shiny and greasy than Vaseline.
My son is now trying emu oil and it seems to be helping - at least it's not making his eczema worse.  Good luck to you and your DH. |

Hi, this is Eczema queen!  The past ten years I have lived through hell with generalized eczema. Conventional medicine has added to the problem, and it can only buff the symptoms causing worse consequences. Don't think there are many ointments, creams, meds, supplements I have not tried. Most of the essential oils and creams caused reactions for me. For the past week I have been using LIPIKAR Baume.
No reactions and it is a rich emollient.
Baths with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 cup of epson salts and 1 cup of milk, is helpful.

My friend suffers from Eczema and was using Vaseline on her face. That all changed when I introduced her to Burts Bees. I made it my mission to find her something that would help her skin. I got her a Burts Bees Facial starter kit and she got hooked on the Marshmallow Vanishing Creme. I saw her a couple of months ago and her skin looked amazing. I got kind of jealous.  |

Hi pnw-has your husband ever tried something without petroleum based ingredients or mineral oil? These two ingredients have always caused my eczema to flare up. I avoid them like the plague. Of course, I'm extra sensitive to many things so it might just be one of my idiosyncrasies.

Hi amnis,
Yes, my DH is a nut about healthy and natural living. He doesn't even like aspirin. So we tried many varieties of all natural products, products that contained ingredients already found naturally in the skin, products made exclusively for eczema, and high end products designed for sensitive skin. No luck. He keeps returning to the petroleum jelly because it is the only thing that helps instead of making his flareups worse. Ironic, huh? Each person finds relief in their own way. Usually, once he tries something, he gets the worst reaction of unbearable burning and itching. He says he wants to tear his face off and I have to stop him from digging at it in his sleep. As you can imagine, he is getting fed up with trying new things so I am trying to work with him and what he already knows works.
Good news everyone - even though the Eucerin company no longer has their free sample promotion, I emailed them and they said they'd be happy to send me some samples of the Aquaphor. Thanks so much for all of your help and feedback! |

Hi, pnw!As I mentioned before Lipikar from La
Roche Posay has many derms votes. One of the reasons is it does not irritate most skins.
The ingredients are mediocre with parafin and petrolatum but when people with atopic dermatitis react to so many ingredients, even natural ones that are part of their skins, this is worth while to protect the skin barrier from allergens, etc. and it is not grea  sy.
Here are the ingredients for the cream and lotion:
Cream: Aqua, Petrolatum, Cetearyl Alcohol, Paraffinum Liquidum, Ceteareth-20, Sodium Phosphate, p-Chloro-m-Cresol
Lotion: Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Paraffinum Liquidum. Petrolatum, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Carbomer, Ceteareth-20, p-Chloro-m-Cresol, Sodium Hydroxide
