I have combination hair -- meaning, my scalp gets greasy quickly, so I have to shampoo daily...but my ends are drier, require conditioning, and look better after a couple days w/o shampoo.

I already take these precautions:
1) Only putting conditioner on the tips
2) (For the most part) only putting shampoo on my scalp, then letting the residue go to the ends (rather than shampooing the ends specifically)

But still, I find myself frustrated... my ends are crying for me to skip the daily shampoo, but my scalp just can't handle it. Also, my ends will often have too much body, whereas the hair on my scalp is flattened and greasy.

Any tips for how I can take care of it? I'm sure this isn't the rarest combo in the world...

Okay this may not be for everyone but what I've picked up in the last month. I have naturally curly/wavy hair which means my hair is course, dry brittle what have you. I stopped shampooing all together and basically just wash with conditioner on my scalp, but I don't use any products that have silicones or silicones that aren't water soluable.

Second option is apply conditioner to the ends and let it soak for a little bit so it soaks in, shampoo your scalp still leaving the conditioner on the ends which acts as a barrier so the shampoo won't strip the moisture out of the ends. Rinse, and condition again as usual. Another think you can do is leave a little of the conditioner as a leave in on the ends without rinsing it all off. Try using a shampoo that isn't so drying, I stopped using it all together because the chemicals in the shampoos are way too drying, might has well be using dishwashing detergent. Try a sulfate free shampoo which isn't as harsh as reg shampoo.

Also reg deep treatments are a must if your ends are dry.

Hope this helps.

Also try rinsing as a last step in cold water, that'll help seal the cuticle and any moisture in the hair.

My suggestion would be to find a good conditioning shampoo for your ends (Cream of Nature, yellow cap, is a good one). Put the end shampoo on first and let it sit, then put your scalp shampoo on and when you are done lathering rinse both out. Cream of Nature really does not require a extra conditioner and is SLS free so it wont strip your hair. It is a miracle worker for dry ends. HTH! (getting a trim might help too)

Do you color your hair? How long is it?

I'm asking, because if you process your hair a lot and it is long, the ends might be damaged and need a good trim.
If not, my mother used to put mayo mixed with a ripe avocado on her hair to moisturize it. You might want to try that, or an deep moisturizer only on the tips.
Your oily scalp sounds like over active oil glands. Rinsing with a lemon juice/water mixture or an Apple Cider Vinegar/water mixture can help cut down on the oils too.

Also make sure you use a gentle shampoo.

It sounds like your hair follicles could be clogged. I had this same problem a few years back, and my hairdresser suggested a follicle cleanser. She said that over time the follicles can get plugged by products, shampoo and heavy dirt that can eventually cause serious hair problems including greasy scalp and extremely dry hair. A follicle cleanser will deep clean and purify the roots and scalp so you can go back to regular shampooing and conditioning. I still use my folli-cleanse once a week and my hair is soft, shiny and healthy now. Very Happy

I use lemon to highlight, but it's not professionally colored. Its a bit longer than my shoulders, and I get it trimmed regularly.

I've never heard of this. Where do you buy it, what is the brand name?

Also, I should mention that I've had oily roots since I hit puberty at about age 12. And that's it's a genetic predisposition -- my dad, in his 60s, still suffers from oily hair, as well as his whole side of the family.

My ends NEED more oil, though.

There are a few good brands out there. I am currently using Healthy Hair Plus follicle cleanser which I order off the net. Jojoba oil is also very good for loosening trapped sebum, oil and dirt, and if you have a good hair care shop such as Green Apple or Chatters, I'm sure they could recommend a good folli-cleanse to you. Also, try a google search, there's some good information out there! HTH's Very Happy

I have long, fine hair, so I've been battling this problem all my life. My hair DEFINITELY needs a daily shampoo, otherwise the roots are simply too oily to do anything with. On the other hand, I have to be careful not to let my ends get dry. I think what you are doing right now--- only conditioning your ends, etc, is good. I would definitely recommend trying the shampoo I've been using recently--- Alba Hawaiian Honeydew Hair Wash. It cleans all the oil from my roots, but it's gentle so it doesn't dry the rest of my hair. Good luck, I know it's frustrating!

Hello!

I have the same "combination" hair- Greasy roots and dry ends.

Some of you might not like this, but I've found Aussie brand shampoo - the conditioner is geared towards greasy roots and dry ends. It works AWESOME for me and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. However, it does have SLS in it (that's why I said some of you may not like it).

Surprising, my hair has done fabulous with their shampoo and conditioner. I'm using the volumizing shampoo and its really good. I'm really like the conditioner too.

i also have this problem.. i have long hair and for some reason the middle to ends is extremely dry. after reading this the other day i tried conditioning everything first, even my scalp which i never put conditioner on because of this problem -- leaving it on while i soaped up etc. and then washing it out with shampoo.. i usually grab any organic brand shampoo, i usually use volumizing shampoo (currently using natures gate) and then reconditioning only the tips again. this really works! my hair was puffier/really volumized and felt really clean after and the rest of my hair was smooth and actually conditioned!

what else i tried that helps:
put a drop or two of jojoba in to your shampooing to balance the oils in your scalp
using a hair powder to soak up oil.. i use Stila creme bouquet Hair Freshener.. works great.
