A teacher who I work with at school is feeling down at the moment.
She has just had a bad flare up of excema. She only used to have it on 1 finger and now it is all over her back and her hands are very scaley.
I was wondering if anyone had used a product which had worked wonders.
Poor thing - she never whinges about things but she is feeling really depressed.

hey emma
i've had eczema all over except for my face (thank god)..it's getting a lot better now but since it was quite severe, it's tough to get rid of it completely
i totally understand how ur friend feels, i was very depressed and cried alot since it hurt and i was worried that others would see my scaly skin
i went to a chinese herbalist and it worked, although it took quite some time to heal..it's better than seeing a dermatologist since they normally would just prescribe antibiotics and some cortisome cream..those cream will have a thinning effect on the skin and it's only meant for very short term use
now i still have scar on my legs but the rest of my body is pretty much free of scars..someone in this forum suggested rosehip oil to help with healing so i'm going to try that

I have some Avene Cicalfate and it's a wonderful product that my friend recommended to me. I use that when I become sensitive to everything else (like when I have the flu). Reasonably priced it's a staple in my goodies cabinet.

hi emma,
I used to suffer from eczema all over my face and body and I find that chinese herbal medicine does indeed help. However I don't know if you can find some reputable chinese herbalist in your friend's area.
I also bought some cream from this Australian website (http://www.eczema-psoriasis.com) and they helped quite a bit with calming down the rashes. Maybe your friend can look into that. The shipping is fast and cheap too~

when my eczema was really bad on my hands (and it got bad --i lost the fingerprints on 6 fingers (it took about 2 years for them to fully reappear) and it affected my nail bed too)
anyway, when it was REALLY bad, one of the most helpful things was to slather my hands in vaseline, and put on cotton gloves (or wrap my fingers in gauze, which i did before i got the gloves) and then put latex/silicon (disposable) gloves over that.
i'd do that before bed, and sleep with it on, by morning the icky eczema skin would slough right off, which would allow me to put moisturizing/healing cream where it would actually do some good.
for her back, oatmeal baths. i've just started doing these again (my elbows and knees are getting bad again) take a section of old panty hose, tie a knot in one end, fill with a half cup of oatmeal, tie the other end, dump in bath and soak. play with the oatmeal a bunch and squeeze it so that the bath gets really milky looking.
then slather on a thick cream (or vaseline if you can stand it) to seal in the water and moisture. |

so terrible to have it so drastic
I have had it on the right side of my face for about 14 mos now, and i have tried cortisone that the derm gave me. Didnt do much and now im at a loss
since i dont really tan anymore it doesnt show up that well, but i still see it. Its not scaley but just a white area. It was specifically called Pityriasis Alba. All the more reason now to buy a Baby Q |

Emma, I find the best thing I can do to keep my eczema from flaring up is to avoid sweets - especially white sugar. Too bad I have such a sweettooth! 
I take lactobacillus (sp?) everyday, and I think that helps. I haven't had to use a cream in a long time - can't even remember what I used to use.
Here's a bit of trivia: Noxema was originally created to combat eczema, hence it's name (knocks eczema out - or something like that!). I can't comment on how it works, though... |

Montrealgal - she is usually good and her diet is healthy. I have read about probiotics being good. I recommend that to her. |

| Hi, I recommend she see a derm. If it is a serious flareup, many times you need something stronger than OTC treatments, (I know this from first hand experience, the only thing that helped one of my children was a prescription product). Hths. |

Hi Lipglossdoll  - she is seeing a doctor and he had given her some strong cream. I'd like to look for more natural remedied to assist her as well. |

| In case this helps anyone, a week ago I tried Jan Marini's Age Intervention Cream on a bad, reoccuring excema flare-up I had on my face. I put it on the affected areas before bed and the next morning it had cleared the areas by more than half. I tried it again the next night and it was 90-95% gone by the morning. I was honestly stunned as my excema never clears that fast without a proper prescription and the cream was pass-along from a relative. |
