Hi milodomi! I love bunnies! Well, I love all animals but bunnies are just so darn cute. I had a small chocolate bunny (not sure what kind, ears were erect though, not floppy...giggle) and her name was Hershey. I actually got her initially because I wanted another animal to keep my cat company, and obviously a hamster wouldn't have worked! Anyway, my cat was mad at me for about a month, but the the two of them would chase each other around my apartment all the time. It was soooo funny! Sometimes they'd end up running at each other when they were circling around my recliner and when that would happen Hershey would jump straight up about 3 feet in the air and my cat would run right under her.
Unfortunately I moved back to Dallas and had to give Hershey to a kindergarten class since I moved in temporarily with my parents and a labrador. I never realized before I got Hershey that they are easily litter box trained. |

yes it's amazing how fast bunnies can run and they are actually quite smart (sometimes they just play dumb )
the gal bunny i have, she's a stray and i adopted her from shelter..the boy bunny i got him from pet store and he has huge lop feet
and they learnt to do their business in the litter box on their own!! |

I had two bunnies when I was about 13. We kept them in a converted doghouse in the backyard at night, and let them run loose during the day. One ran(or rather hopped)away and the other got its eye poked out by a cat. We took him to the vet and they sewed the socket shut...he lived out the rest of his days as Bun-Bun the one eyed rabbit. I love bunnies! |

ouch!! it must have hurt..but at least he was fine afterward
i've seen a bunny with 3 legs at a local shelter..bunnies r quite tough, i think =>
but it's sad since i've seen many abandoned bunnies in my neighbourhood..as much as i love bunnies, i really don't wanna see them around since often they get ran over by cars or get picked up by hawks i feed them whenever i see them around and they r all very sweet
just hope that people would think twice before they get their pets..it's a lifetime responsibility
i really love bunnies, if i win the lottery, i will set up a huge shelter for bunnies with lots of snacks and toys |

I LOVE bunnies!!!! They are such sweet, personable little creatures! I have done volunteer work with the House Rabbit Society and I won't so much as set foot in a restaurant that has rabbit on the menu.
Right now my husband and I have two dear little holland lops. Har Mar, our baby girl, is calico, and Forest, our sweet son, is brown. Forest is very dear to my heart because we adopted him from a shelter and he was in really rough shape. For a long time our vet thought he wouldn't make it, but my husband and I nursed him constantly until his health improved. (My husband had to give him all of his injections as I'm scared of needles... ) His dental disease was so severe that he had to have all of his teeth removed, but today he's fine and he eats special mush that we make for him. Forest is really a mama's boy--- he follows me around the house, and the minute I sit down on the couch he climbs into my lap and goes to sleep.
You can see some pix of Forest here:

Thanks for posting the adorable photos, what a cutie, and he looks really content. What a great thing to do rescuing a bunny that needed so much care. I wish everyone took this good care of their pets. |

omg, he is SOOOOO cute i've had my bunnies for about 2 years and actually their names r milo & domi..ahha..that's where my username came from
milo is the holland lop x lionhead and he had the same problem that his front teeth were all extracted since he had bite problem..i've read alot about bunny health and his problem seems to be genetic (i read lots of articles on the house rabbit society site ) so i will never buy any pets from pet store since animal's welfare is not their priority..
he has had his teeth extracted for over a year and he is doing very well; he eats regular pellets and he can just pick them up with his lips..just lately he's got an abcess under his chin and i'm paying close attention; it doesn't seem to bother him much but i might take him to the vet for another operation to get rid of it (already had one operation but the abcess grew back)
domi is the stray bunny and she is very healthy without any issues at all
i'll try to post the link to some pics later..they love each other very much |

Wow, so many people have bunnies... I feel a bit left out, lol. My family owned a bunch of rabbits when we lived in Ukraine, but that was over 13 years ago. However, every day I come home, there are always 2 rabbits on my lawn. At night, in my neighborhood, there are so many in the roads and on the sidewalks. It's pretty amazing yet weird because I don't live in an "unlively" neighborhood.
Are those bunnies that are out and about in my neighborhood dangerous, anyone know?
How long do they live? |

Liz, I'm sitting here at work getting all teared up after reading about Forest and seeing his pictures! He is so sweet and beautiful that I wonder the same thing...how could anyone abandon him?? I am so happy you and your husband are loving people and giving him such a wonderful home. You are truly his angel, and he is a very lucky bunny!

hey, i don't think those bunnies are dangerous at all..most of them are out and about since they were abandoned by their owners, and when i see the bunnies when i go home, i feel so bad coz there isn't much i can do
i thought of catching them and send them to shelters, but bunnies are not easy to catch and they don't show up at a particular time
so i just pray and hope they won't get hurt and feed them whenever i see them..i did notify the local shelter to come rescue them though |

You know, I don't think they were abandoned by anyone. I'm pretty sure they just live in the field which is pretty close by. And since they have started constuction there, the bunnies are coming into the nearby neighborhoods... like mine |

I agree, when we go visit my hubbys family in west Texas there are bunnies everywhere, they just get pushed out of their homes by people, and you know what past time bunnies are famous for.....so that means they are always abundant. |

I had a small chocolate bunny named Hershey, also. I bit it's ears off Sorry...couldn't resist It was in my Easter basket.
I've never had bunnies as pets, but I've seen quite a few around here and it amazes me because I grew up in the city and the only rabbits I ever saw were in cages. I never realized that some rabbits actually have cottontails until I saw one in my backyard..it was brown with a big white cottontail! |

Hi everyone! Great thread! My friend is looking to give away a few baby mini-lops (4 months old) and I'm thinking of getting one. I've always wanted to own a bunny ever since i was a kid, and hopefully now that i'm MUCH older , i'll be more equipped to care for them. Was wondering if you ladies can give me some tips on how to survive the first week i.e. sleeping area, litter training, food, handling, etc. Thanks in advance! |

Since I lived in an apartment, my mom and I built a huge crate (basically lattice with wire tacked on the inside and set it on a piece of laminate. The top was completely open. I kept her in my living room since that was the largest area to keep the pin, and since I lived alone it didn't matter where I kept her really.
Anyway, I was really surprised at how easy bunnies are to care for. They're litter box trained EASILY (basically just provide one) and sooo extremely quite, well unless they're chewing on things of course. That was the only problem I had with Hershey. I don't know if the older ones chew all the time, but the young onces chew EVERYTHING. My bunny even chewed a whole in the bottom of my recliner so she could get up inside it. More than anything though be careful of any wires. They go for those first. I had to keep a constant eye on her when she was out of her cage because of her chewing fetish. Even the corners of the walls got chewed!

Dollbird I think you would LOVE having a bunny!! They are quiet, sweet-natured, and very loving. There's a lot of good info atwww.rabbit.org, but here are my tips:
*Housing: Even if you plan on letting your bunny have free run of the house eventually, it's best to start out with a large cage or exercise pen so your bunny can get used to its new home, and so you'll have a safe place to put it when you aren't around. You'll want to equip the cage with a litter box, food dish, water bottle, a few toys, and a towel or something they can cuddle up in.
*Litter Box: Bunnies are naturally tidy and quickly learn to use a litter box. Put the litter box on the opposite end of the cage from their food and water. Use only paper-based litter (cedar or pine is harmful to rabbits), and put some timothy hay in the litter box as some bunns like to munch as they do their business.
*Food: As long as you give the bunny plenty of timothy hay, whatever else you feed it is up to you. Don't overdo the pellets or fruits as bunny will get fat, but feed as many leafy greens as you like.
*Handling: Some bunnies like to be handled more than others. Case in point, my little girl Har Mar hates being picked up, but my little boy Forest has to be held and cuddled by me several times a day. I think if you handle the bunny when it is younger it will get the bunn used to love. Also, getting the bunny fixed as early as possible with make it more calm. Just be careful to hold the bunny firmly... rabbits can break their own backs if they kick too hard.
I hope this answers some of your questions, and I hope you don't feel overwhelmed. Keeping a bunny is actually much easier than it sounds (and much easier than keeping a dog or a cat IMO), and it's very rewarding to see how quickly they become attached to you. Let us know if you decide to get one, and feel free to ask me any questions you have! |

Hahaha, I've def. heard some bunnies are chewers, but in most cases you can really cut down on the chewing by putting lots of chew-friendly toys in their cage, then they get it all out of their systems. Forest of course doesn't have any teeth so he can't chew anyway, but we give Har Mar toilet paper rolls, wooden bunny toys fromwww.bunnybunchboutique.com, etc to chew while she is in her pen, so when she comes out she doesn't chew on anything. HTH! |

Well, I gave Hershey about a bazillion things to chew on and she still chewed everything else! I read somewhere that it is a common phase they go through when they're young...I guess similar to teething? I would love to own another bunny some day. They are the absolute CUTEST when they take a bath and pull their ears down to clean them, or when they rub their little whisker cheeks with there paws. ADORABLE! |

I have an 11 year old house bunny. He is a hoot...and bossy!
Here is a website that we did four or so years ago (and haven't updated it since) but there are some pics of our bun.
The bunny and my dog are best friends. They have such a special relationship. They love each other. The bun is definetly the boss, though. If Milo starts getting too obnoxious, the bun nips him. They eat alphalpha together and the bunny likes to sleep in the dog's bed!

This is so funny--I just came home from adopting a rabbit from a local animal shelter and here is a thread about "wascly wabbits"! I decided to get a rabbit as a class pet for my Kindergartners this year, so I found a nice, gentle, small Dutch rabbit at a shelter and brought it home this evening. He's so cute and cuddly! I had to spend double the money equipping both my classroom AND home with a cage and supplies, but I think it will be fun to have the bunny at school during the weekdays and at home with me evenings and on weekends. I have to interact him a few days before I take him to school to make sure that he does indeed have a good disposition. When my son was young, we had a Netherlands Dwarf rabbit that bit. I've been reading up on rabbits and I found out that the dwarf rabbits are a little nervous (comparable to the Chihuahua breed in the dog family) and tend to nibble. I hope this one turns out to be a good choice for children. I just brought him home and I already adore the little critter! |

SeekingHG, I'm so glad you decided to adopt a bunny!! It breaks my heart to think of all the bunnies at shelters with no one to love them! Please let us know how you get along with your cute lil guy. I think you're right about the Netherland Dwarves being nervous. On the other hand Dutch bunnies are supposed to be quite gentle, so I think you picked a good one! My husband and I are very partial to Holland Lops--- they have those adorable long ears, and they are very affectionate. |

hi dollbird..
my bunnies r only in the cage when i'm not home, they run free around the house and they love laying on the floor right next to each other..they enjoy watching tv and their favourite show is david letterman
housing is pretty easy, just a cage and i use carefree for bedding..it's supposed to be the safest type of bedding since it's made from recycled paper (paper or paper by-products..if i remember correctly)
don't feed any alfafa hay since it's fattening and the best type of hay is timothy; there's always fresh hay in my bunnies' cage and they love fresh greens as well..their favourite is cilantro
most bunnies don't like being handled..mine don't like being held at all; the only time when i can hold them is when they r at the vet's
they do love chewing but there's something called bitter apple spray which u can spray onto things that u don't wanna them to chew i.e. cords..or u can just buy them willow rings or apple branches so they have other "targets" and won't be chewing on things around the house
here is a pic..dunno if the link works..?
