Always one to be happy of skin that has no major problems, imagine my distress when I realize I am covered with full blown acne!
History: Skin is combination. Occasionally get one or two pimples that go away within a couple days. Used Cetaphil on skin followed by witch hazel toner and Dove moisturizer for years.
About a month ago, switched to Burt's Bee Orange cleanser and ACV toner. Stopped using Dove moisturizer because it was giving me weird chin acne. Changed from Neutrogena Dry Touch SPF 30 sunscreen to Sofina Perfect UV SPF50+. My skin looked great for 2 weeks, then about 2 weeks ago, my forehead started getting 5-10 pimples, which I didn't worry too much about and used my TTO as treatment. Whenever I get pimples, it is usually on the forehead anyway. Then, I started getting tiny bumps on my cheeks, which has never happend in my life! I thought it might be purging, but I don't think purging occurs on areas that usually don't have problems? Also, I have been using Pure Luxe April's Mix on a daily basis (only used for special occasions before). Anyway, I let this continue hoping it would get better but it's been 2 more weeks and it just looks worse! My skin lost the glow and look bumpy all over and just soooo unhappy I have stopped using Burt's Bee cleanser, ACV toner, and sunscreen ( I know it's a skincare sin!) and have just been using cetaphil/nivea cleanser. I am still using the Pure Luxe powder.
Can anyone suggest the cause or the evil culprit to all my woes? And perhaps suggestions on what to do next? TIA! |

could the ACV toner be to strong for you? or it's not at the right pH level for your skin?
What moisturizer are you using now that you've stopped using Dove?
I find that an asprin mask really helps me calm my skin down.
Not sure what the Pure Luxe April mix is. So I can't comment on that..
No matter what, you should continue to use a moisturizer! Stripping your skin of oil could make your acne worse. |

Amaska, I haven't gotten a new moisturizer sinze I stopped using Dove. I had no idea that no moisturizer is bad for acne! I am just too scared to add any new products!
My ACV toner is at 40:60 ACV and distilled water. I should try diluting it more. |

I wonder if your skin is purging because of all the new products.
Try Earth to Body products, especially the Emu-Neem soap and the Clay-Neem Treatment. They're all natural too. |

yeh I am wondering if it's purging or allergic reaction towards one of the products. Is it possible to react to a product a month later? |

poofybabypenguin, that is probably enough to keep your brushes clean. They don't recc. baby shampoo w/ no more tears, something about that formulation isn't good for natural hair brushes. My guess is that it isn't the April's Mix. Sorry I can't help more. |

Poof,
Changing your entire routine all at once may not be a good idea (hindsight is 20/20 right? lol). Not only does it make it difficult to tell how you're reacting to each specific product, but all that change at once is almost guaranteed to upset your skin... if my personal experiences are right! I get more realistic results when I phase products into my routine. I start with things I know do not bother my skin and then slowly add in another.
Also, make sure that if/when you're using the Orange Essence Facial Cleanser that you take it off with warm water and a washcloth. It is oil based so just rinsing may not be removing all of it from your skin, which could lead to breakouts.
I also believe I've read posts where other members mentioned an initial reaction to starting the ACV toner, but I haven't tried it myself so I'm not sure. Like Amaska said it may be too strong for your skin with your current dilution ratio.
This whole thing could also have nothing to do with your skincare routine, since you say it all happened 2 weeks after the fact. Hope it works out for you. |

Absolutly! I am acne prone and unfortunatly I don't know if something will make my acne worse until I have been using it for a month or so. Most allergic reactions would be noticable in a week or less but I don't think that it is unheard of for them to take weeks to develop. Sometimes it is easy to overlook the beginnings of an allergic reaction since it can be subtle. |

perhaps it's something to do with a change of diet or stress lately? it's weird how your skin would be good for the first 2 weeks when using burt's bee's cleanser and then all of a sudden break out after. |

good point about phasing in a new product. Yes hindsight does seem more clear I think I will dilute the ACV toner and also add my moisturizer back in my regime. The Canadian winter seems to be starting already! My face suddenly felt dry a few days ago.
In terms of stress, nothing I can do about that! I am a university student
Thanks everyone! Hopefully time will heal my complexion |

It is absolutely possible to react to something a month later! I do it all the time
I get all excited about a new product, and then two to three weeks later, I get little, red bumps on my cheeks, or on my forehead, or everywhere...
It usually seems to be cleansers for me - with most topicals I can feel the stinging that indicates my skin doesn't like it immediately.
Very frustrating. I try to rein in my enthusiasm till I have been using a product for a solid month, that is usually safe. |

Washing your brushes once a week is enough...some pple don't even wash their brushes. Maybe try ( I know it's difficult) to find and stick with one skincare line. They (the companies) always say that their products work best used in conjunction with one another. |

I wonder if it might BE the April's Mix. I looked on the Pure Luxe website, and it does indeed contain mica, which is bad news for my skin. If you did go from using it only on special occassions to every day, it could be part of it. If I use a product with mica, the blemishes don't occur instantly. I'll be a week down the road and have 5 or 6 blemishes and be like HEY and then when I stop using the product, my skin returns to happy. |

You have so many great suggestions here! My first thought was that your skin was purging and your ACV might be too strong. You went from using very chemical-laden products (the second ingredient in Cetaphil, I believe, is Propolyene Glycol) to very natural ones. It could be that your skin is now trying to get rid of all that yukky stuff in your skin.
For the past month, I have completely eliminated all chemical products from most of my routine (I do have a body lotion I am using up). My skin has been doing the same thing and it's been hard. I finally resorted to the Dr. H rhythmic conditioner and I've been trying to hang in there as my face gets better (I've added a few other natural products to help). It is finally calming down but it's been a month of acne (some of it worse than what I had before ). If you do want to go more natural, you should research more on how other people have transitioned and go slower like others here have recommended. Drink lots of water too!
HTH! I know it's tough because it's been a depressing time for me too... |

aww EDS ppl are the best! I love you guys
I went off everything for 2 days. Then I diluted my ACV, still have not gone back on s/s (I know, I know..soon!), added back my moisturizer, and changed my towel. I'm happy and a little skeptical to note that my pimples are turning into bumps. Still a lot of bumps, but not as flared up as before. I'm hoping it's just purging! I've definitely learned my lesson and will phase in products a tad more slowly hehe Meanwhile, I think my diet and school stress may have also been a factor. This past month I moved back to school, so no more nutrious food from home hehe I still eat more healthy than most university students but definitely not as well as when I was home for the summer..sigh.. yay thanksgiving! time to plump me up
thanks to everyone that's responded! I don't feel so alone and depressed anymore hehe oh the magic of eds! |
