I know the topic of MMU foundation brushes has already been beaten to death, but i couldn't find one that discusses heavy coverage application. I'm presently using my JI Chisel powder brush for my loose minerals, but while i find that it's soft after washing, it becomes coarse and scratchy after a few days. And it keeps on shedding! So now i'm hunting for a new brush, preferably one that gives a smooth, heavy application. I've heard flat top brushes are good for that purpose. Any one tried any?

I've been using Smashbox brush 19 and I think it gives me pretty good coverage. I still need to put on a few layers but that's because I have lots of past acne marks to cover. The thing I like about 19 compared with other good quality kabukis is that the hairs are shorter. I noticed that kabukis, even though they are dense, the length of the hairs are actually pretty long so coverage may not be ideal. 19 has shorter hairs and is dense - not flat-top but I find that it gives me a very centralised application so I can get more coverage.

Try a flocked sponge. I switched to one about 4 months ago and won't go back to a brush willingly. Smile

Try using the Bare Minerals kab. brush. They have a small pudgy one and a taller one. I use both and get great coverage.

I've always wanted to ask - WHAT IS A FLOCKED SPONGE? I find a lot of them quite expensive for a SPONGE. I'm curious, if I knew what they were maybe I can get them elsewhere instead of buying off brands like JI, True, which are rather expensive.

Hi, flocked sponges are cheap!I bought 2 for about 4.50USD from Pure Luxe Cosmetics and have seen them for about the same on other MMU sites. They are washable. I'm not sure how long one would last if used everyday b/c I only use one occasionally if I put too much product on accidently, to smooth out my look. Good luck.

Hi dollbird - I just started using MMU and really like the JI Handi Brush. However, I use Pressed Base so I don't know how the Handi would work compared to the Chisel. Sorry I can't offer more perspective.

I have to agree with others though about trying a sponge. The JI Pressed Base compact comes with a flat sponge, and when it arrived and I tried it for the very first time using it (too anxious to open the Handi box), it gave a much heavier coating than with the brush. If I were you, I'd give the JI Flocked Sponge a try, since it's a lot cheaper than any brush! Besides, if it doesn't perform as you'd like, it would still be handy to help smooth-out heavier application with a brush.

JI handi brush doesn't give heavy coverage, but you can apply as many layers as you need. Smile
I think you need to buy a really good kabuki brush; kabuki brushes are more dense than powder brushes. Flocked Sponge sounds like a good idea also.

Here's a description I borrowed from a google search. It really does a good job of blending the make up around the nose and chin area. When I use it I can barely see my pores.

Flocked Sponge Soft, thick sponge is made of cloth like fibers, not rubber or latex like most cosmetic sponges. It is 3" long and double sided. It is used for application of the powders and to buff and blend the jaw line/neck area to perfection. It can be washed and used again and again. The best make-up sponge available today. Use it for applying mineral base to large large pores and they disappear!

Nice! Thanks for all the input ladies! All great suggestions, but i've decided to go with Lauress Flawless Flat top brush, only because my friend has it and I tried it out. I like that it is not too dense and not too thick either, and the goat hair isn't scratchy unlike my JI chisel brush. The flat top also gave me the coverage i wanted. Another interesting alternative would be MAC's 180 small buffer brush, but oh so expensive.

Since I've been using MMU (which has really not been "that" long to be honest) I've learned some things from veterans which I am finding are absolutely true! First, don't buy a crappy Kabuki, my first one (from Sheer Cover) shedded and was horrible (and so was their makeup!) My second one was great, I got it from UGloGirl when I ordered samples, they're foundation is my current HG,and this brush is super soft and very dense and has never lost a hair, even after several washings. They sell them online atwww.uglogirl.com. Before I got my Kabuki's I found out the hard way that the Powder brush doesn't give much coverage (which I need) and the flat head bronzer feels rough and doesn't blend very nice, kinda irritates my skin too. I too have tried the sponge and really like it, but I like to spritz it with some of my toner and then dip it into the lid and apply the foundation wet. This is when I need more coverage ofcourse. Then I go over very lightly with my Powder brush to set it.

I am also interested in these new "handled" Kabuki's I've been hearing talk about and would like to know if anyone else has tried one yet? Also where to get a nice soft high quality one. So if anyone knows PLMK!

I did it! I went out to MAC and bought a kabuki! I originally went there to buy the #180 small buffer brush but the MA recommended this instead (#182 buffer brush). It's from the limited edition Catherine Deneuve line but MAC made this permanent with a black handle instead of the original chrome handle. When the MA tested this on me, i almost melted from the softness. The bristles are very dense and picks up product evenly, distributing it to give me the most flawless finish i have ever known *throws away JI powder brush*. Check out the great reviews MUA under "Catherine Deneuve buffer brush". I balked at the Cad$55 price but when i saw the results on my face, i would go back to buy a second one if i ever lose this.

You can find smashbox in holt renfrew. I actually have both this and 182 and yes the 182 is definitely softer. But it doesn't give me as heavy coverage as my 19 because like I said before, my 19 has shorter bristles. I use my 182 for silk dust and meteorites Smile
