Is there a difference between oil and sebum? Or are they the same. I was wondering if the blotting tissues absorbs sebum (if they are different) that's why I wanted to know. Also because I was reading how stress relates to acne and it says:
Quote: |
Stress causes worsening of acne in two ways. First, by stimulating adrenal glands to produce more hormones and secondly, by slowing down the healing process.
Adrenal glands, which are located above the kidneys, secrete norepinephrine and epinephrine under stress and adrenal cortex secretes male hormones. These male hormones are well known for stimulating the sebaceous gland to secrete more sebum, which ultimately results in the formation of acne. |
Since I am getting stressed, but my regimine is the same, it led me to the question... is sebum and oil the same thing? If not, how can I lessen the sebum production? I hear exercise keeps hormones under control, therefore naturally that may mean less sebum =) |

Yes, it is the same thing.
You can lessen sebum production by taking Vitamin A and thin it by taking flaxseed oil.

Take care.

Wow, that's very interesting Bosoxy, thanks! I've heard those things helped acne but I didn't know why. Also, will you PLEASE change your signature, every time I see it I'm so tempted to get out my discover card and get me some ice elements |

Bosoxy I never knew that taking flax oil could thin sebum. For a few years I ate ground flax seed everyday and I suspected that it helped with my acne. I always assumed it had something to do with the flax oil being anti-inflammatory but from what you say the flax might help with acne in several ways. Would you happen to know if Evening Primrose or Black Currant oils also thin sebum? I started taking black currant oil again because I suspect that this helps with acne because of the anti-inflammatory action but does this oil also thin sebum? I plan on going back to flax seed very soon and will pay close attention to how oily my face seems. |

Theresa I have also been taking flax seed oil with EPO and zinc added. I have seen really good results for my skin's dehydration and hair/lash growth, but probably need to be on it for longer to see results with acne.
I used to also eat tons and tons of ground flax seed (whole health food craze) but I didn't see anything work, I think by grinding the seed you don't capture enough of the essential fatty acids which are best preserved by cold pressing.
I have heard EPO is good for those with a certain type of hormonal imbalance, oestrogen deficient I think. Otherwise it can cause acne/hot flushing if taken in high dosages. |

miranets I don't see why grinding flax seed would cause it to lose EFAs. I am no expert on cold pressing but I imagine it is similar to grinding. IMO the small amount of grinding need to break the outer shell of the flax seed should not create enough heat to damage the oil. I buy my flax already ground and chose to do this instead of buying the oil because the oil, even if it is cold pressed, can go bad a lot quicker than the ground flax. You can bake with ground flax and maintain the EFAs but you cannot bake with flax oil and maintain the EFAs. I would have about an 1/8 cup of ground flax a day and I did notice results when using it. My acne seemed to improve when I was eating the flax seed and while I did not realize it at the time looking back I have a strong suspicion that the flax helped. My only concern with eating flax seed is that it contains lignans and I am not so sure it is good to be ingesting these everyday since they are estrogenic. So I may switch to the oil anyway. Do you buy the oil itself or the capsules? I have tried the oil and really don't like the taste-it almost makes me gag. But I have heard that the capsules are not the best since heat is generated when putting the oil in them and that is not so good for the oil. I will be starting flax again but am not sure what form to choose!
I can't take EPO since for some reason it bothers my stomach. Instead I take black currant. Do you know if the black currant is also estrogenic? |

Hi!
Oh yes, there are so many good for us things out there and most are multi-purpose.
It never ceases to amaze me when "those in the know" say that such and such is not proven to do this this and that and then 5 - 10 years later a huge new "breakthrough" study is released that such and such has been proven to do this this and that!
Theresa, check out that site:
http://wholehealthmd.com
Click on healing centers
Then click on acne, then nutritional supplements - you will see a list of great stuff and the hows... evening primrose oil works similar to flaxseed oil.
dealated, you should totally take out your Discover card and order some good stuff from Ice Elements... Very soon they will have the new Eidelweis serum premiering free with the purchase of the 2 minute miracle exfoliation gel... I cannot wait!
Take care.

Which of those three helps with lash/hair growth? Also what's EPO? How does everyone take the flaxseed oil? Caspule form or liquid? |
