I read in this forum sometime ago that if we have two sunscreens, Sunscreen A with SPF 30 and Sunscreen B with SPF 15, if we put both the sunscreen together at the same time, we could only get the highest SPF as 30, we could not get 45, am I right?
I would like to put both Vitamin E (with SPF 30) and Vitamin C (with SPF 30) creams as anti-oxidants every morning, I would like to know is there any harm to have double sunscreen protection or more in a single time?
Another question, if after we put sunscreen (with SPF 30), we put make-up (with SPF 15) on top of the first suncreen (with SPF 30), will the first sunscreen (with SPF 30) lost its function and will not be able to provide sun protection of SPF 30 for our skin anymore? We can only get SPF 15 from the make-up????? Is it? |

I'm not an expert at this, there are others who are more aware than me but from what I know there is no harm in layering products with SPF ONLY IF you make sure the ingredients don't clash and degrade each other. But you do not get "double" the SPF when you layer, I think layering just is beneficial in terms so that your sunscreen doesn't wear off as quickly. Regarding the makeup and sunscreen I remember reading in another thread on EDS that you should be aware and check to make sure the ingredients in your makeup does not degrade the sunscreen you put on prior to it. If they do not clash you will not lose the protection from the first sunscreen, the effect would be the same as layering. For example I use my Clarins SPF 40 + MMU. Because both are physical sunscreen ingredients I will still get the SPF40 in my Clarins as they do not clash or degrade each other.
HTH, and if I'm wrong in anyway I hope someone will correct me |

I don't remember the exact link and I didn't read the ingredients in depth but do a sunscreen search on EDS and you'll probably find the thread that has the link. But here's a link that I found very useful that I got from another EDS ss thread: http://forums.cozycot.com/showthread.php?t=5631
I took some quotes out for you from the link but they are not explained in detail:
"Some chemical screens may degrade other chemical screens in the formulation..."
" DON'T mix your sunscreen with other products, like moisturiser or foundation. You may end up halving the protection or worse." (layering is fine as long as you make sure your moisturizer is absorbed first)
I know my MMU doesn't clash with my Clarins because both are completely physical. MMU gets it's SPF from zinc/titanium oxide (don't remember which one) and I have the exact same filters in my Clarins thus I don't have a problem with chemicals degrading other chemicals or chemical filters degrading my physical filters, etc. |
