From the SkinActives site. all the rage on other boards....

Is it used by anyone here and have you had success?
***************************************
This small protein (only 53 amino acids) was found to enhance epidermal growth and keratinization. Work by Cohen and his collaborators demonstrated that EGF directly stimulated the proliferation of epidermal cells, and this stimulatory action of EGF did not depend on other systemic or hormonal influences. Cells that respond to EGF do so because they have receptors on the cell membrane that recognize the factor (which has been produced by cells that may be near or far from the target cell). The binding of the growth factor to the receptor initiates a cascade of molecular events that will eventually lead, among other effects, to cell division. Among the practical uses of EGF are its use in accelerating healing of skin and cornea. We make our own epidermal growth factor using biotechnology.

ur Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is very powerful. Remember that EGF is a "signal" and not a nutrient, so you need very little for it to work! You will hardly see the EGF at the bottom of the small tube. It is kept very concentrated to preserve its activity. Store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

When ready to use, add the contents of the second tube (saline solution) to the tube containing EGF and close. Mix by inverting and straightening the tube several times. The EGF is now ready for addition to 8 oz. or so of your cream or lotion. DO NOT BE TEMPTED to use it more concentrated than this. A growth factor is similar to a hormone: very little (it is measured in micrograms, one millionth of a gram) will go a very long way.

Add it to 8oz of cream or lotion or "whatever"....that sounds suspicious to me for a "growth factor" with that much oomph. Wouldn't pH perhaps affect it. I thought creams/lotions were occlusive and then the "actives" in formulas couldn't get right into your skin since moisturizer/lotion forms a protective barrier. I don't know. Those directions make me wonder. But proof is in the pudding, right? If there are other users that have used it for awhile and believe they saw results, then maybe.....it works. Maybe.

Well if you go to the SkinActives.com you can see that a lot of women are using it and making their own creams. VERY knowlegable women at that.

They have a "recipes" section with one that has EGF as a main ingredient. I visit another website that has women who swear by mixing their own and claim to be very sucessful. SkinActives has their own forum as well to disuss such things. It is VERY intersting.

Anyone used it here? I'm not against DIY recipes and all. We do lots of that here. Those directions are just so general....can it be mixed into Creme de la Mer or Ponds? Those are very different yet it will work with both. Still suspicious.

they explain about vehicles to use for these ingredients on Skinactives. Some debates as well. You can even email the person who runs the website about specific concerns and she is very knowlegable on all that.

Can you tell us the name of the other website? I'm looking into this and want to know where I can find more information? Thanks!

I think it may be scary stuff. On the TNS faq's they say they exclude this from their growth factors because of bad effects.

here is the link:

ww.Skinactives.com

and spectacularskin.com
VERY knowlegable people there. Many have the studies AND experience to back up their claims. In fact, everything I have bought as a recommendation from them works. I need more logic and explanation before I just go out and buy something.

I am afraid we are better at science than we are at writing instructions. We have done the calculations to show that the protein mass of 50 micrograms is of the order of magnitude that when added to 4oz of cream it will stimulate the skin receptors and promote cell division.

Please remember that EGF is a natural signal in our skin, so by applying EGF to our skin we are mimicking what happens when we hurt ourselves. All we are trying to do is make our skin "believe" that we are hurt so that it will get cell renewal going.

Cancer cells are cells in which DNA has suffered mutations affecting the control of cell division. They become independent of external signals for cell division, whose function is to keep order.

In the skin the most dangerous cancer is melanoma, in which melanocytes become cancerous. These cells do not have receptors for EGF so would not be promoted by its use.

Please visit our forum for more information.

There is a lot more to EGF than Skn actives cares to write. There are numerous reports which document the correlation between EGF and skin tags, EGF and Melanoma--there is research still being undertaken which is examining the relationship between EGF and the genetic pre-disposition to melanoma. If the consumer were to look closely they would find that there are numerous other debates conerning the safety and efficiancy of EGF.
Some dermatology biochemists believe that EGF has a dalton rang which makes it unable to be absorbed by the dermis, yet others believe that it causes skin tags as well as accelorating neoplastic growth which is already active in dermal tissue.
There is also another debate which states that by adding EGF to the skin, the skin begins to produce less of its own EGF. When EGF is withdrawn from use, the skins natural ability to produce EGF has been diminished, therefore leaving the consumer with a sallow and slow healing epidermis. The solution then is to start using products which contain EGF. This is a great selling tool for cosmetic companies which use EGF in their products, as it creates a dependancy for EGF.
Please think twice and do your own research before deciding to use EGF containing dermal creams.

Have to be honest with you. I buy stuff from skinactves and have read and re-read about EGF and something inside of my head says not to try it. I don't know, but I never ignore that inner voice. I have taken a pass on this stuff... at least for now.

I would be interested in hearing about others' experiences with it.

Donna, my thoughts on EGF are:

SAS says it's a signal to stimulate cell turnover. Therefore, it's not for those young enough to be producing sufficient EGF on their own. As we age though our own levels drop. For those, like me, who are "of a certain age", our own signal is pretty weak.

I have been using it with the Marine Nutrient Serum for about 4 months and I am seeing improvement especially in old acne scarring. I haven't developed any unwanted side effects, either. The addition of EGF also seems to help me heal faster after a peel.

But please do continue to research it and any other actives you're contemplating before making a decision to try it. If you are concerned about EGF or any other active it's just not worth the added worry to try it.

That is great, and what is even better is that by having peels you are stimulating your own growth factors. I suppose you could call it growth factor gym, use it or lose it.
Your results from using EGF are great. Just try to avoid moles, and small patches of dry scaly skin. An article in the New England Journal of Medicine advises people to withold using EGF in the eye area both upper and lower and on the neck, due to these areas being prone to skin tags as we age or suffer from diabetes.

Good on you!
