Now that I use clarisonic twice a day, I feel pretty well exfoliated.
I've done one 3 minute glycolic in the past six weeks or so since I got it - just around my nose and chin.
I'm not using aspirin masks either, since I got it.

I'm wary of 'over exfoliating' - I heard someone upset the 'acid mantle' of their skin by over - exfoliateing, so now I'm afeared!

Has anyone here experienced this problem?

How much is too much? Question

I've always worried about this too. I am using a glycolic cleanser for sensitive skin twice a day and I must say that I don't find my skin irritated by it at all. I think it is great that I don't have to exfoliate any more (at least I don't think I have to).

I had one of those skin tests under ultraviolet light today and the lady didn't mention anything about needing to exfoliate. She also said my eye area was looking really good for my age (33) which is great coming from a girl who looked barely 18. She must have thought I was ancient!

When I first started using this cleanser I had mild tingling but now my skin doesn't feel anything at all so I think the skin jsut acclimatises to the glycolic acid.

I think it also depends on what products you are using on your skin. If you are already using acid based leave on exfoliants, then I would cut down on other types. But if you are using heavy products that help skin to turn over faster, it may be worthwhile to exfoliate more but gently, so there is not so much dead skin buildup.

I am comfortable with daily manual exfoliation with dermabrasion crystals because my skin has been turning over really quickly since I am using ZB products.

I wonder about this too, but I think it depends on your skintype. I have oily/combination skin that gets clogged up very easily, so I have to exfoliate more than most people to keep everything clear. I use my Clarisonic 1-2x per day and have recently begun using MaMa lotion at night. I even skipped doing the every-other-day routine with the MaMa because my skin's so tough and resistant and I've been using chemical exfoliants for years. But for someone with even slightly more sensitive skin, this routine would be overkill.

But I'm trusting that your skin will tell you if it's being overexfoliated--like getting red and irritated or something like that.

How much exfoliation you use I would say depends on the type of exfoliation...

If using clarisonic twice a day, then I would definately not be looking for any other manual exfoliation. You could try an enzyme mask once a week, but I would then not use the clarisonic the next day (or at least the next morning). Enzyme masks can help to speed up the turnover of dead cells (which your clarisonic would then exfoliate away..).

When I was using muslin cloths nightly on my face when cleansing, I found I did not have to exfoliate as much. Just once a week with a manual scrub or the original Epidermx.

When I was using RoC Peel-Ex Radiance every 3rd night, I did not use any other form of manual exfoliation (but did use muslin cloths sometimes on days when I was not using the peel) and if I use the Cellex-C Speed Peel (now that is a kind of enzyme peel/microdermabrasion combined treatment) you dont need any exfoliation for a week (but personally I think speed peel is a bit strong for my skin).

At the moment I am using EpidermxII nightly, so I no longer use muslin cloths. I also have not been using my enzyme masks recently as my skin just does not need it with the small daily exfoliation with EpidermxII.

Thank you for this question! I've wondered the same thing. Is the appearance of thos elittle bitty bumps a result of over exfoliation? They are small and hard and few. Are they clogged pores? From what? Any ideas what might be on my face? around the corner of my mouth and on the cheeck maybe three of them far apart.

I wonder as well, I have been using Retin a micro for about a year now which is working great. But i think as long as you stay out of the sun or use a strong sun screen, it should be ok!!

Because I have oily skin, there is a huge difference in CLOGGED pores and dead skin build up. Normally, my face feels extremely rough, almost like having millions of clogged pores, but the difference is that if I exfoliate and use the Zenbiotic Cell renewal serum overnight, my skin is extremely clear the next day. So first is by "feel.

Then if you find makeup, liquid or powder, to look a bit pasty and have dry patches, then it is time for a scrub. Plus if you find that you can scratch your skin (without makeup) and bits accumulate under your fingernails.. SCRUB!

What I mean by skin 'turning' is.. your skin cells have a normal cycle of 28 days when it is shed and replaced by new cells. This is a critical process, and by using the right products, you can eventually change the texture of your skin by speeding up and fueling this process in a nutritive way. So by using certain products or methods, you can remove the dead skin build up faster, but many times people do not use enough products to help the regeneration process.. thus you may end up with thin skin, broken caps, irritation etc.

... plus as we get older the 28 days cycle for turnover gets longer, no? Hence the fact we need to use our potions to speed it up. Laughing

Miranets - GREAT information! Please elaborate on this ... what do you mean by "nutritive way" and "don't use enough products" ... what would those products BE and HOW would they be used? Therein lies the rub (no pun intended - sort of!) ... I think you are saying people are exfoliating too much and not using the right products to then ensure that the regeneration process is also speeded up, that is why there's a problem with "over-exfoliation." More details, please! TIA! Very Happy

Me too! I want to check out what the 'nutrative way' is.

Is it Vit C, for example?

Hi Miranets,

This is very interesting to me. When you say scrub, do you mean with something grainy? And with you having oily skin (like myself) do you use an oil-free moisturiser (that maybe a bit richer) or a light gel? I am trying to find the right combination for my skin, and seem to be overdoing things. I can sometimes see a slightly rough surface to my skin and also a few tiny bumps, that I am sure are filled with oil? Do you think using a glycolic cleanser, both morning and evening might be too much?
