I have been lurking and reading your posts for a little while and finally decided to ask a question.
My 10 yr old son's nose is so cute but he has tiny blackheads, clogged pores and occassional small pimples. I have been able to smooth things out a little but not get rid of the stuff in there. Would love to just steam him and squeeze them all out but I don't want to get him going along that path. He could become obsessed in his teens (he is that kind of kid I think) and really make his pores worse. Plus, he would never let me do that! Just in the last few weeks I think the sides of his nose look oilier. The rest is still pretty powdery feeling .
He started having these at age 8!!!! Probably his diet but I do the best I can. He eats more green veggies and whole cooked grains than any kid I know, but he also does not eat much raw, he prefers white bread, he drinks some milk, he eats icecream and definitley too much chocolate and sugar. The Dermatologists say it is not food related but not so sure about that. I used to keep him away from this stuff when he was little but I don't have the energy for it and he is out of my sight so much of the time now.
So, any suggestions? I have been using some Chirally correct products because I wanted to be the least traumatic but don't think they are strong enough. I have Differin from doctor but does not clear out blackheads.
Thanks everyone! |

Hello and welcome!! I don't really have any advice on this particular problem, just wanted to say hi. There are so many knowledgeable ladies here on the boards I'm sure it won't be long before someone comes up with an idea for you. |

Hi and welcome
Haven't got a suggestion for a product but don't try those strips that rip out the blackheads, they just make the skin even more oily over time. |

As long as he's not allergic to aspirin, you might want to start him off with a 2% salicylic wash or serum that he can use on those areas to clean the pores and keep the gunk out. Just Google and you'll find lots of suppliers. I just made my own wash by crushing 10-12 aspirins and combining that with 1 T. of 'seamollient' (source: www.gardenofwisdom.com) and 1-1/2 T distilled water, stir stir stir, put in a 1-oz bottle, and shake well each time before use. This is NOT a leave-on forumla but something he could put on in the shower while he's washing his hair or body, then rinse off.
I personally wouldn't get him started on harsh skin preparations typically used by teenagers (benzoyl peroxide, etc), many of them are way too irritating and sets off the cycle of drying, then requiring topical moisture, which causes clogging, which creates problems, etc. If he could cut down on sugar & dairy that'd probably help quite a bit. |

Yup - that should be his middle name. Same with DH. Runs in the family. All of them. Addicted to it! At least they like the darker more bitter sweet too though. Less sugar.
Wasn't there some talk about BP causing cancer or something? My Derm gave us some but after reading that I chucked it. I agree about the chain of events from overdrying and he is not anywhere as bad as these teenagers. I am just very observant and want to nip this in the bud early. He may have to wait until he cares more about how he looks to have more discipline about what he puts in his body.
I am using a Sircuit product with Salycilic Acid in it but doubt it is 2%. Is this the same as Beta Hydroxy. I have some 3% of that from Makeup Artists Choice. Might be too strong. I will do some research on this. Do you think using that will make him more sun sensitive? I hate putting sunscreen on his nose during these darker months here in the NE. He is really only outside a very little bit and in shade. But it is a concern because I am not always on top on him and even in the summer there could be days when he goes outside without sunscreen and at camp sleepovers I am not completey confident it gets reapplied after every single swim or on the morning when there are overnights.
Thanks. |
