Just wondering how much sugar everyone ate over Christmas. Since cutting back on sugar is my NY's resolution this year, thought I'd get my fill before the 1st!
I've eaten too many chocolates to count, along with the tarts, squares, holiday fudge, and my Mom's home-made apple pie that I ate Christmas day! UGH!
I eat very healthy, lots of fruit and veggies, fish and chicken, I drink lots of water and take vitamins, but can't seem to shake the sugar habit.
Hopefully 2007 will be my break-through year! Anyone else have this problem? |

My stomach is getting a layer of fat in the lower area from not excercising enough. Sugar is addictive so it's just nice to munch of something sweet. After a few pieces of chocolate, I am eating out of habit rather than fully appreciating the flavor but I can't stop. I'm getting hungry so I have to go look in my fridge again. |

Oh, Lord, I have SO overdone it this season. In early December, I took part in a cookie exchange and decided to use some new recipes for it, which necessitated a lot of sampling to ensure that the baked goods would make the grade. On exchange day, I received eight dozen tasty treats, most of which I ate myself. (Imagine the satisfaction of finding out that my usual breakfast of All Bran cereal & protein powder goes well with a fudge chaser.)
Anyway, after also baking a lot of goodies for family and friends (Christmas cake, rum balls, Almond Roca, three kinds of shortbread, gingerbread teddy bears and a ton of other stuff) and again consuming a good portion of it, I'm almost ready to stop. Mostly, I'll be happy to be rid of the heartburn and the worry that solid butter is sludging its way through my arteries. |

This is really the only area where I could be considered lucky to have IBS. After a very small amount of sugar (maybe 2 or 3 of my very favorite, Christmas-time-only, almond Spritz cookies, those shapes my mom squeezes out of this ancient metal tube she's had since my childhood) I get nauseated so I stop.
The rest of the year I have a square of plain, dark dark chocolate and I'm pretty satisfied. |

Only a few more days and it will be New Years Day, after which there will be no more mince pies and boxes of chocolates.
And no more cheese and crackers while watching movies at 11pm. |

I'm allergic to chocolate so it limited my intake of sugar. On the other hand, I've been eating out a lot. |

Too much sugar is my worst habit too. The few times that I have actually shaken the * spam alert * were when I went absolutely cold-turkey. The first couple of weeks are *really* hard, but it can be done. The last time, I did it, it lasted two years. Then I thought, well, I can handle a little -- wrong! I am back where I started again. There are some supplements that you can take to cut down on sugar cravings. I can't remember all of them now, but one that worked for me was l-glutamine. Once the holidays are over, I have to get back on track again. |

Thanks for the l-glutamine tip - I may have to try that! |

Wow - I'd never heard about the l-glutamine tip either! I did hear that apple cider vinegar is good to help squash sugar cravings..

I don't get sugar cravings, but I did eat three entire batches of sausage balls pretty much by myself because DH was working on the three batches of cookies instead. Oops! |

I ate way too much sugar in the form of chocolate and puddings and all those things we are supposed to have in moderation. Then I stood on the scales this morning and it is back to the gym for me - 2kg in two weeks. Oops
Oh well life it too short not to indulge occasionally |

I'm cutting out sugar for New Year's. Yesterday was my first day and it was sooooo hard. I was craving sugar all day. We have these dutch chocolate bars in the pantry and every time I found myself heading to grab just a small piece of it, I made myself tea instead. I had 6 cups of tea before 5pm! (No sugar or sweetener in the tea of course, just plain herbal tea).
I'm getting moody too. To make matters worse, we ate dinner at a friend's house...she ALWAYS makes dessert...every single meal. Last night, homemade cardamom cookies and peppermint ice cream. I had to leave the room and read a magazine. My husband doesn't understand because he just says no, and that's that. He doesn't understand my cravings and moodiness and how I'm almost suffering from withdrawal.
It's like a drug...how horrible! I had no idea sugar was doing this to me! |

My sympathies, ParisTroika. I think women's cravings are harder to deal with than men's. They just say no and forget about it, but we almost mourn not getting something. Hang in there, but don't send yourself into an all- out binge! |

L carnitine and Cromium picolinate are supposed to help, too.
And eat an orange or a pickle instead. It will kill the craving.
BTW, substitute sweetners are no answer. They keep the * spam alert * going. And since they taste 100's of times sweeter than sugar, they raise your tolerance to the taste. Sugar will not be near sweet enough for you again, if you ever get going with the fakes. |

Don't hate me ladies....but I had basically none!
I started a low carb diet back in November & haven't been eating any sweets. (I even baked Christmas cookies & didn't have any myself!)
And....I LOST weight over the Holiday Season! |

So I guess the worst time for me craving sugar is after dinner. I was pacing in the kitchen after dinner tonight. ARGH! I don't really want to take anything to curb the cravings but I'm only on day two (TWO!) and I'm ready to go crazy. Why...why? Is there something wrong with me to want sugar THIS bad?
Must resist...must resist!!!!
Must...make...more...tea.... |
