Ok, I decided to start a new thread on this because this is a revamped version of the Silk Dust that includes Pearl Powder.
A little background - I've been using Carrie's regular silk dust but at first I found it way too drying (my skin was pretty dehydrated at that moment) so I rarely used it and when I did I could only use a light dusting as a finisher. After about 1-2 weeks of using it again regularly (and I've been working to balance my skin as well) the silk dust wasn't dry anymore and I could finally use it as a primer and a finisher. This is when all the threads about pearl powder and pearl paste came up so I asked Carrie if adding Pearl Powder which is self-adjusting would help the dryness from the silk dust. So my experiment commenced:
Used this for approx 2 weeks as both primer and finisher. At this point the regular silk dust no longer made my face tight so I think I got used to it already. The first time I used it with the added pearl powder my skin felt slightly tight. I had a cyst I've been picking and I realized at the end of the day it wasn't as inflamed as it was in the morning so the pearl powder really helped calm the inflammation. With the regular silk dust I find I'll need to blot at around 8 hours - my skin starts to feel a bit yucky at around 6 hours of mmu (Alima) even though I don't have much oil. When I blot I'm not an oil slick, just a slight film of oil around my tzone. With the added pearl powder my skin felt FRESHER longer, in the sense my face doesn't get that yucky feeling until about 8 hours. And with the blotting I found no significant difference, around the same amount of oil produced around the same amount of time.
In conclusion I think Carekate's got another winner, being acne-prone I can't imagine using her regular silk dust without pearl powder just because I do pick sometimes or I extract in the mornings whatever's come to head so it really helps my redness/inflammation. And I LOVE how it makes me feel fresher longer, I'm not one to touch up during the day so it's very important to me. This is also a great alternative for those who prefer not to use the Pearl Cream/paste during the day. When I'm applying makeup I prefer to go with my regular moisturizer than the pearl paste due to the little tiny specks left on my face and that it does sometimes ball up if I don't wait long enough for it to absorb. Her Pearl Cream is one of the products I'm beginning to feel I can't live without as it works so well after extractions, just not a good product for me in the AM. Carekate's Pearl Silk Dust allows me get all the benefits of pearl powder and all the oil controlling properties of her silk dust. And with the pearl powder added it's much more original than Jurlique's! |

Great review!
This will go on my list for when I run out of my CareKate Silk Dust (the regular stuff). I really love that and am adoring the pearl cream.
CareKate does it again!!! |

Interesting! Does anybody know the chemical composition of pearls? Is pearl powder made out of calcium carbonate? Or...?? |

Hi PocoLoco,
I've been using pearl powder in my silk & pearl primer/finishing powder since last spring.
Pearls are, I think 57% calcium, 37% protein and about 20 different amino acids.
For some reason pearl powder's nutrients are "skin available" for lack of a better term. I know that my skin has been much better since I came up with Pearl Paste and my silk & pearl primer.
Pearl is such a great anti-inflammatory ... and seems to tone and tighten the skin. Silk is self-adjusting so that it helps both dry and oily skin.

I have the original silk dust and some plain pearl powder...what's the ratio of pearl powder to other ingredients if I want to "revamp" my silk dust?
If anyone knows, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
TIA!

You should PM Carekate, cuz what I did was just ask her to send me some pearl powder along with my order (I already had her silk dust). She sent me a small ziploc of it, but for some reason after I mixed it in it fluffed up. The original silk dust filled about half a jar or a bit more of CareKate's blue cobalt jar but after I added it in and shook the jar well it almost filled to the top! I'm pretty sure there wasn't so much pearl powder, it just fluffed up, but it's nice now cuz it'll be next year before I use my jar up |

Hi ParisTroika,
I don't know what the ratio of pearl to silk is in Carrie's version ... but in my recipe I used 2 parts silk to 1 part pearl.
Hope that helps.

What a fabulous idea to add the pearl to the silk dust! I already love the original version, but definitely like to try this next.
CareKate's getting some really innovative products in her stable of skincare and cosmetics. |

I suppose you could add the pearl powder to your MMU too.... |

Hi PocoLoco,
The Pearl Powder that I get from TBK is really too coarse to "add".
When I shared my recipe for my Silk & Pearl Primer with Carrie, I told her that I run the pearl powder through a coffee grinder and/or use my mortar and pestle to mill it finer ... so that it could be used "dry" in a face powder.
So ... if you're thinking of getting some pearl powder, just be aware that you might have to make it finer before you add it to MMU.
However, I don't know that it's necessary to actually add it to MMU unless you're adding it to your primer powder. I think that's where it does the most good ...
If you don't use a primer powder, however, you could certainly add it to your MMU foundation.

Mary, my apologies for asking this again, but where did you buy your pearl powder? Is it already in this thread? |

That's what I'm doing in the pre-made Pearl Silk Dust I've just added, but in Sormuimui's case, she added 1 Tbs of ground pearl powder to her jar of CareKate Silk Dust (which is approx 30 grams -- same size container is Jurlique SD). |

Mary- Do you buy 4oz. of each or just 1 oz. is sufficient? How much do they charge for shipping to Canada? Thanks. |

FYI - just remember that they have a $25 minimum order (regardless of where you live) so it might be moot, unless you find other item/s you want to add to the 1-oz pearl powder.... |

Hi Carrie,
I thought it was a %15 minimum ... m. Of course, I generally order both the silk and the pearl at the same time ... so it's always over the minimum.
When I first began ordering from them, they didn't have a minimum. However, even a $25 minimum is better than some of the places that have a $100 minimum! Yikes! That would hurt!
Hi tidieu,
You wouldn't need more than 1 ounce but I do like having 4 ounces to "play with"!
I don't think the shipping is much ... maybe $5 to Canada ... and they are very very very fast! I've received orders within 4 days of ordering from them a couple of times ... however, usually it takes about a week. It's odd but I get stuff faster from them than from any other company in the US. It almost always takes 2 weeks for stuff to get to my rural address!
[Now watch tidieu's order take a full two weeks!]

Thanks Carrie, Mary!
I plan to order both the pearl and silk powder.
I was thinking of ordering 1 oz. to keep my order small so I don't get ding by customs. But if they have a $25 minimum then I would have to order the 4oz. |

Hi Tidieu
I have never had to pay customs ... although with one order I did have to pay that "package handling" fee that Canada Post slaps on every once in a while. For the most part, though, the little packages [she packs in zip lock bags] arrive right in my rural mail box.

I hope this work for me. I need something that help with hormonal acne, tightening pores and firming.
This would be my first experiment with DIY. |

Carrie got a lot of winners, but it is really hard to get a hold of her products since she got limited internet access and her mailbox is full. How do you all get to buy her products? I think Carrie should quit her job and start selling her products full time and open up a web store either on Ebay or on EDS. Who thinks so, too? |

Hi tidieu,
PM me with any questions you might have. Since I first began playing with pearl and silk powders last winter, I've run into just about every result! [My garbage bin can attest to that! ]
At any rate ... if you've got any questions at all about the silk or pearl powders or even the Pearl Paste ... let me know!
We don't want you disappointed by your first DIY experiement do we?
