Ok, here's my situation: my bathroom is pretty much my sanctuary. It's where I take relaxing baths, and where I put on my make up, so I need it to be clean and good-smelling at all times. Usually it's enough for me to leave a good-smelling soap out on the counter (I like Lush's Honey I Washed the Kids and Candessence's Chocolate soap!!), but recently the water in the toilets has taken on a kind-of sulfur-like smell, which makes the bathroom smell kind-of off. The bars of soap are just no longer cutting it. I've tried plug-ins (scent fades after just one day--- no good!), oil plug-ins (waaaay too strong--- I want to scent my bathroom, not my whole apartment and the hall outside my apartment! ), and spray fragrances. The glade sprays I tried were all too fake-smelling (blech!), and the Method Lavender/Lemongrass spray I tried was better, but still smell kind of funny. Any recs, ladies? I just ordered Cucina Dolce's home fragrance sprays in Espresso, Hazelnut, and Fresh Cream, so I hope they are better than the glade ones, LOL. |

Liz, you should try ESTEBAN home fragrance products.
They have fabulous room sprays or ceramic potpourris (the ceramic is poreous so it releases fragrance) and some other great options.
The products are a little pricey, but they're totally worth it (my house is filled with them)! |

When Bath & Body Works was having their half yearly sale all their wall plug ins were $5. I stocked up and I absolutely adore them. It's a little pricey after the sale at $12/pop but boy oh boy their array of fragance is limitless it seems. It's not to strong, but adds just the right amount of that little something to make one go ' ..that smells nice what is it?'
I have black reaspberry vanilla in my living room and love it! |

Ari-- I tried Scent Stories for a while, but I couldn't find any scents that I liked. (Worse still, one of them reminded me of an old boyfriend's cologne! )
Gottahave and Aries, I'll check out BBW and Esteban and report back--- thanks for the suggestions!
Keep em coming, ladies!^-^ |

I just checked out Esteban and I LOVE their idea of scented stones--- they would look so nice in my bathroom!! However, $50 is too much to shell out for a scent I haven't smelled yet--- does anyone know of similar scented stones that aren't quite as pricey? |

$50 for rocks? I'd just throw some scented oils on rocks if I could and call it a day |

Sprinkle half a box of baking soda into your toilet tank. Let it sit overnight. Then flush.
Tape the box with the remaining half to the back of your toilet tank. |

I have Reed Diffusers in my bathrooms. My friend gave them to me for Christmas. Prices range all over the board for them. Lately I have been thinking of making them myself. The price is not bad considering they should last many months. After cleaning my bathroom in the morning I turn over the bamboo stick and the scent is refreshed for the whole day. I have Lavendar/Vanilla The bottle looks attractive also. If you made them yourself it could be as strong or light in scent as you want.

Make your own (I am sure there are many sites that sell the oils)

Why not diffuse your favourite essential oils in the bathroom? There are lots of different types of diffusers too. This is my favourite way to freshen or scent my house. Or you can make your own air sprays. Just get one of your favourite hydrosols, mix in with some water, blend in a few drops of your fav essenital oils, shake and spritz. Easy peasy. And you won't have to worry about those disgusting artificial and synthetic smells. Bleh. Some are so awful and nowhere near the true scent. Rose scented my a$$. Can you tell I hate artificial room deodorizers? LOL But seriously, EOs are the most natural and most fragrant way to make any room in the house smell pretty, and a great way to create whatever mood you like. |

a basket of charcoal.. dont laugh, I can hear you all.
seriously, in Japan they use charcoal for everything... and one use it to put some in a little basket and let it absorb the odors. I even received some fancy designer set once done like some Japanese object d'art.
charcoal is also used in the bath (to absorb the chemicals), in a vase of flowers, tossed into drinking water.. and even popped into teh rice while it is cooking. |

Maybe a plumber, could be your seal under the tolet be going or lose, and your getting a slight sewer gas smell? Unless rest of water in house is doing that, I'd def get it checked out. It can also just be your sewer line needs to be cleaned (like a clogged drain) and its backing up the gases a bit. |

If you think it is sewer gas - a) check the water level in the tank of the toilet - if it isn't high enough that can be the problem; b)is there a shower or tub in the bathroom that is used infrequently - if so pour at least 5 gallons of water into it preferably with bleach (I know you hate this). |

what about putting one of those hanging-toilet bowl cleaners in your toilet to help get rid of the smell in the water? I read above that you're not a fan of dumping bleach in the drain (I totally agree) but perhaps there is one made with baking soda or something that would work in a similar manner? |

OK, I must be feeling dramatic this morning (lack of sleep and caffeine) because my first thought was "OMG I wonder if you can die in your sleep from sewage gas?" followed by "jeez, I hope she is not a smoker"
MelissaMarie has made a good point.. I would be trying real hard to find the source of the smell not just cover it. |

yet another use for the humble dryer sheet.
So with CareKate rubbin' them all over her legs to ward off mozzies and Vonstella shovin' them in her airvents... do any members here actually use dryer sheets in the dryer?
(I wish I had found thse uses before I threw away the one box I bought of them.. could not use US dryer sheets in my Japanese dryer as they made the dryer make this terrible squeeking sound.) |

I second Salli's idea.. I live in a brand new condo.. but gets this nasty smell in my master bathroom all the time.. The building's plumber said it's because we don't use the tub enough..so the U shaped pipe which should have some wather sitting in it is dry, and nasty smell flows in from the main pipe. I find that it helps a lot if I let water flow in the tub once in a while and keep that tubstopper in. |
