stop when the pump clicks off on its own, or do you keep pumping to "round up" to an even number or try to get to the nearest dollar?
This morning, I was pumping gas and the total came to $29.87, and I had to round it up to $30. It just made me feel better !

Okay, okay, I'll go fold laundry....unless I think of something else to post....

I stop when the pump clicks off the first time, without rounding up. Quicker, and I have plenty of other things on my charge card that are not rounded to the next $ so it doesn't matter to me. |

I round up too but I am not very skillful at it...I sometimes end up with things like $30.01

Wild Cat, that was me, too. I would miss the next even dollar and think I had enough room to go up to another dollar. Sometimes ended up overflowing the tank a bit. I think that's what made me realize it wasn't worth the hassle to me. |

I'd always assumed that pumping more after the auto-shut-off was bad for your car or bad for the gas or something...but I never thought much about it, but now I'm really curious! So is it actually ok? |

All depends on how far I am from a round number when the "clicking" starts but I usually do try to round to a whole number too. |

Well, it depends on season, temperature, and other variables such as the gasoline mixture in general. But basically, yes, it isn't all that good for your car for you to round up to the nearest number because gasoline expands and contracts. After all, it is a liquid. Sorry for not knowing any specifics on that.
Now, having said that, I ALWAYS go up to the nearest dollar... Yeah.....do as I say, not as I do the saying goes.... |

I top off to the next dollar if I'm writing a check or paying cash. Usually, though, it's on my debit card, so I don't bother. |

When I bought my car the dealer advised me NOT to round up, so I never do. I just stop when the pump clicks off. |

I hate to stop to get gas, so I usually keep pumping until it right before it starts to come out of the car. Sometimes I time it right , sometimes I don't ...so I always keep hand wipes in my car. |

I might have done that once or twice. But I don't carry hand wipes with me, so I try to avoid that. |

Well ... I won't pump my own gas. The smell of gasoline is one of my migraine triggers ... so I never pump my own gas!
However, rounding up won't hurt your gas tank unless it's really hot out. When it's cold ... topping up the tank is fine. When it's hot out, gas expands and topping up the tank can be a problem. At least ... that's what a mechanic friend of mine told me years ago.

I always round up.
I like to pump my gas clad in a fetching beige jumpsuit - just to tease the passing truckers. |

Yep...I round up, and at least half the time end up one or two cents over!

I have no control on it. I got full service in NJ. So, it depends on the guy that filled out my tank |
