Hello. I am new at posting on this forum, but I have been reading the forums for some time now. I'm in my early 20's and have oily skin that I have trouble controlling. My makeup literally melts off in mid day and my face is always shinny. I use oil free products, but I'm still oily. I've used mattifying products that seem to help a bit, but is there anything I can do to control the oil secretion rather than masking it? I know that exfoliating too much will cause my skin to produce more oil so I only exfoliate once a week. Is there good products out there that can control my oily face?

Decleor Ylang Ylang Aromaessence regulates oil production. I know its weird that oil can actually help control oil but its fantastic. Surprised

What products are you currently using? If you are using products that are too aggressive or drying, it can backfire on you and you'll end up producing more oil. Sad

Please give us a list of what you use now.

I use:
AM:
- Cetaphil Cleaner
- Clindamycin (RX for acne-- I use it like a toner)
- Kiehls Avacado Eye Cream
- Clarins UV 40+ sunscreen
- Philosophy Hope in a Jar
- Make-Up

PM
- Shu Uemura Light Oil Cleanser (to remove makeup)
-Cetaphil Cleanser
-Dr. Hauscha Cleansing Cream
-Dermalogica Daily Microfolant (1-2 times/week)
-Clindamycin RX
- Kiehls Avacado Eye Cream
- Philosophy Hope in a Jar (original)

* I just bought the Yonka Gel Nettoyant Cleansing Gel after I read so much good reviews on the forum. I will be using it instead of the Cetaphil Cleanser once I get it in the mail.

I would still recommend Decleor Ylang Ylang Oil to use in the morning. You can request a sample to try. You can also consider Retinol products in your night routine because they do help with the oiliness.

Wildcat suggested Decleor Ylang Ylang Aromaessence; there are a lot of good reviews on this product for oil control.

A product that I use periodically in the summer when my face goes into over-drive with the oil production is Aqua Folia Intensive Regulating complex. It's a gel that you apply just in your t-zone (or all over if you oily everywhere). It does an excellent job of controlling oil.

Also, hazelnut oil has astringent properties. It's a light oil that absorbls almost instantly. You may want to try it just before your sunscreen. I haven't used Clarins 40+ before, but I do know that most sunscreens leave my face an oily mess. Are you sure that it isn't making your oily skin worse?

Thanks Tam and WildCat for all your helpful suggestions. I do think I will try out the Decleor Ylang Ylang oil. Hope it works for me!
At night, even without my sunscreen I still notice I am oily. But I think you are right, the Clarins UV PLUS 40+ is too oily for me eventhough it says it's oil free. Crying or Very sad

RubyWong, try the Bioelements Decongestant Cleaner, also. I was very oily and ALWAYS breaking out until I tried it. I've been using it since last October, and will never give it up. Maybe it will work for you, also.

I again concur with the suggestion of a facial oil particularly Decleor's Ylang Ylang.

Secondly I'd like to say Clarins' sunscreen is really light so it shouldn't be a "cause" of your oil, so I wouldn't suggest you switching sunscreens but you could give Sofina or Sunkiller a try, but they are of similar texture to the Clarins. Also perhaps you should be using your sunscreen AFTER your moisturizer.

You could add silk dust to your makeup routine as a primer and a finisher to help control your oil. Carekate has a wonderful one, Jurlique as one, Everyday Minerals has one - manslayerliz did a review on a bunch recently - you could try searching.

You should also make sure your routine is balanced so you get enough moisture and not just focussing on drying products that claim to get rid of oil as they will just end up causing more oil for you. What makeup are you using, I found that Alima MMU is good but if you don't like MMU I found Lancome's Maquicake Forever powder foundation (only sold in Asia though) very good for oily skintypes too. For makeup:

-Philosophy Supernatural Poreless Tinted SPF 15 as a base
-Philosophy Supernaural Mineral Makup
-DiorSnow Concealer
-Nars Orgasm Blush
-DiorShow Mascara
-Bobbi Brown Black Pot Eyeliner

Aside for sunscreen after moisurizer and adding the Decleor Ylang Ylang oil, how can I imporve my routine? Thanks

hi Ruby
i know cetaphil is supposed to be gentle but it contains lots of harsh chemicals, for example SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE.
i have used cetaphil before but did not like it. maybe it just doesn't work for me.
i would suggest you try some all nature products without harsh chemicals.
zenboitic and earth to body both have good cleansers...hope this helps

I’ve previously documented my own attempts to create a comprehensive skin care regimen to battle my oily skin, which can be found in this thread: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=7244&highlight=battle+plan

Looking over your current regimen, my suggestion is to add something like Decleor’s Aromessence Ylang Ylang oil in the morning, prior to applying your moisturizer/sunscreen/makeup, as well as a Silk Dust powder to apply BEFORE you put on your makeup and then another layer AFTER you’ve applied your makeup.

Those two items should be the cornerstone of every oily-skinned sufferers skin care regimen, period.

I happen to have a sample of the Decleor Y-Y oil and some Jurlique Silk Dust that I would be happy to send you to try before you commit $$$ to purchasing full-sizes when you don’t know if it’ll work for you – just PM me to work out the details.

I was looking into the Jurlique Silk Dust and noticed that they have 2 different versions. Rose and Lavender? Is there a difference between the two besides the scent? Which one should I get? Also, is there talc in this product? Thanks

RubyWong,
There isn't much difference between those two besides the scent. I think Jurlique website assigned Rose to oilier skin and Lavender to drier skin. But, I think they both control oil. Also, I think the Lavender silk dust is made from 100% Lavender Essential Oil whereas Rose silk dust is made from concentrated rose petal...I think Think

Hi RubyWong

I think oily skin afflicts a lot of Asian girls and I had the worst oily skin before I started having thyroid problems in the past 6 months. I used to have to blot every 2 hours.

The oily skin is a pain because makeup and sunscreen comes off or looks non-existent before the end of the work day or even worse, before lunch.

Some tips I think will help:
1) I hate to be the health advocate here but it is true, lay off the fried and greasy foods. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and stop eating so much bread. There is something about gluten-y foods that trigger an increase in the production of DHT in our skin. THe result is more oil.
2) Drink a lot of water throughout the day.
3) Most times, you won't need a moisturizer. The moisturizer, depending on what the main ingredients are, can contribute to more oiliness.
4) Use a mattifying sunscreen. I tried Clarins UV 40 but it wasn't good enough. The Shiseido SPDF 55 PA+++ lotion is good. I heard but haven't tried Sofina.
5) Exercise. This helps to lower DHT in your system resulting in less oil and better skin.
6) Do not use abrasive cleansers. Anytime you scrub your skin, this provokes your skin to produce more oil.
7) Supplements such as Evening Primrose Oil (Omega 6) or Black Currant Seed Oil (Omega 6) and add Fish Oil (Omega 3) to balance out any of the above Omega 6. These Omega 6 supplements contain fatty acids to decrease DHT.

8. Retinoids such as Tazorac or Retin-A can decrease oily skin (according to Audrey Kunin, M.D. http://www.aaaskindoctor.com/oilyskin.html)

9) Glycolic acids "...while they do help to exfoliate the skin, play more of a role of temporary oil reducer, and help cut through the surface oils and clean out the pores. They are not actually curing what is happening within the gland. " (according to Audrey Kunin, M.D. http://www.aaaskindoctor.com/oilyskin.html)

10)My dermatologist recommended Clinac O.C for my oilies. I found out that there is Benzoyl Peroxide in it and decided against it since BP is a pro-inflammatory. This means that it can age your face. That's a no-no for me since I'm 36.

I hope this helps!

Should I consider a Decleor balm to replace my Hope in a Jar as a night time moisturizer? Which Decleor Balm would be good for me?
--

**Decleor Ylang Ylang Balm ( is it just the same as the oil, but in the balm form?

-- or --

**Decleor Essential Night Balm?

Also, has anyone tried the Decleor 10 day radiance powder cure? Is it good? Will it fit my oily skin type with acne problem? Thanks

Decleor Balms are meant to be used on a rotational basis, 2 weeks on, then 2 weeks off, then 2 weeks on, then 2 weeks off.....

If you use them continuously without a break, they can be too drying for the skin (which, in turn, can kick your sebum glands into overdrive to produce more oil to compensate for the stripped feeling of your skin).

And the balms are different from the oils, in that the balms are waxed-based products (which is partly why they can be so drying).

I absolutely LOVE the way the Ylang Ylang and Essential Balms smell (OMG - to die for!!!), but I really didn’t feel I got any benefit from using them...I wish I’d known you were interested in the balms because I believe I also had some samples of those I could have sent you, as well! Confused

Have you received your packet of samples yet? I’m curious to know how you’re getting on with the Y-Y oil and the Silk Dust and Pearl Creme samples....

I was once the "Oil Slick Queen." Now with my current regimine (Thank you ParisT).

IFP BHA 3%
IFP DMAE 3%
CAREKATE's awesome Pearl Paste!
IFP Clarifying serum
CAREKATE's YY sebum control oil! I have tried it without this and I just get oily again. CANNOT live without it!

It just takes find the right stuff and not washing and treating your face with harsh chemicals. I used to wash my face 3 times a day. Now I just use a gentle cleanser in the morning and before bed.
