Hi
I am so confused about what products can actually do for you.
Can products such as Retin-A actually repair wrinkles permenently or is it the case that whatever you use on your skin ( in this case to diminish wrinkles) the results are only temporary whilst using the product? So once you stop using the product your skin will regress.
I'm torn between using products such as Environ (vitamin A based and AHA's) and the more natural Decleor? In the end do they give the same sort of results using different ingredients?
I would really appreciate some advice here as I'm so confused. I am 36 years old and would like to 'delay' the signs of ageing for as long as possible. I already have lines on my forehead, between my brows and around my eyes.

I personally think you're half right about retinoids. They fatten the epidermis up with new collagen and elastin. Look at this piccie of the results of long-term retinoid use

Now no moisturiser is going to do that, but once you stop using you stop using retinoids you also stop building the epidermis and speeding up the cell-turnover but your skin doesn't instantly deflate though it looks a bit rougher and less glowy because the corneal layer isn't so thin (another action of retinoids). It should take a long time for the structural improvements to break down again. In my experience it took at least a year if not longer after stopping retinoids before I started to notice my skin wasn't quite so full. |

| Retin A is a prescription drug and, in order to be a prescription drug, FDA is convinced that it actually changes the body in some way. Cosmetics can only legally use the terms like "changes the appearance" since they have not gone through the drug approval process and cannot claim to make a physiological change. This is my rough understanding through work with the lawyer in my office and our FDA consultant! You might also want to check the US FDA web site to understand the difference between allowable claims for drugs versus cosmetics. |

This isn't rocket science. If you use a product that actually remodels your skin in some way, as opposed to something that just camoflages a flaw, the results are lasting. But nothing is "permanent."
If you eat a healthy, nutritious diet are the results permanent? Well, it's true that you'll enjoy better health and the results will be visible in terms of the quality of your skin, your nails, your hair, etc. If somebody throws you in a concentration camp, you won't look like crap instantaneously, and if your were fit and healthy before, you'll probably last longer, but eventually, you will suffer the effects. Think of your skincare products (if they are good ones), as the components of your skin's diet. |

Katee, are you basically saying that as long as my diet is healthy and protect my skin with an SPF it doesn't really matter if I use either Environ or Decleor, they will give me the same results even though they use different families of ingredients?

No - thats not what I'm saying.
I was addressing your question as to whether the change that retin a, or any other active, effects is permanent.
As for Decleor and the other product you mention - is it Environ? - I've only used one or two decleor products and have never heard of environ. Perhaps someone else can help you with those. |

| A lot of people seem to like Decleor and I myself have liked some samples I've tried, however check out the full list of ingredients (sometimes have to check elsewhere on the web to be sure) and notice the heavy use of oils, ie. palm oil, sunflower oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil, etc. Don't know the percentages but this turns me off nonetheless. Try to decipher the long list of other ingredients as well, if you want to be sure. |

I think what Tracy is trying to ask is what ingredients, actives or whatever you want to call them are truly proven to help improve appearance or if there even are any. Am I right Tracy?
I think it's a good question and would suggest that you check out smartskincare.com. That site has a lot of great information about different ingredients/actives and what has been proven effective and what is still uncertain but perhaps promising. I'm sure there are other sites out there but this one should get you started. HTH. |
