I am looking for some really great organic yet high-performing shampoo, conditioner, styling products for hair. Mine is fine/thin/straight/tends-toward-oily. I am chemically sensitive and have been trying various chemical-free brands to find some that really work great--like a salon product, but that don't make me either break out or get headaches or otherwise react adversely.

I used to use Aveda products, which perform great, but just have too much gunk in them.

Aubrey is really clean and I like using their products, but the performance is awful.

I've tried a couple of Giovanni, two of which were nice, and the others either had an awful smell (what were they thinking???) that I couldn't stand to wear around all day or just weren't quite right for my hair-type.

Dr. Hauschka shampoos and conditioner are HEAVEN to smell, but, made my hair feel dry and brittle.

I've seen a MSM shampoo and conditionerr by UltraEsthetics, (a pretty clean, chemical-free line whose body lotions I really like) at a local healthfood store, but haven't tried it. It's pricey to buy if I won't like it...

They also have Logona hair stuff, which I know to be pretty clean chemically-speaking, and reputable. I've used a Logona hairspray, which is light and I like.

You might want to check out the Nature's Gate line of shampoo/ conditioner. I tried the persimmon and rose, and it's not bad. Smells good, too.

Aubrey is the best I've tried and I'm surprised to hear you are unhappy with it. What about the products did you dislike?

I love John Masters. His products are expensive but deliver. I have used them for the past year and wouldn't use anything else for my hair. You can order them online at http://www.saffronrouge.com

I second Nature's Gate--- I LOVE their hair products! The Asian Pear and Red Tea Shampoo smells so yummy!

I so agree about John Masters - it is the only organic range I have tried that delivers. In fact, I think I will get over the cost and buy it again. I remember everyone saying how shiny my hair looked when I used it.

Smoothskin, that's exactly what sold me on John Masters - I couldn't believe the shine in my hair after I used his products. In a way, I was hoping his hair care products wouldn't work because the price range is incredible. But, I must say there was such a difference in my hair (even the texture) I had to repurchase a number of his products. Oh well, at least I get a good feeling knowing it's pure organic so I'm using good quality ingredients on my hair. Makes up for the loss of money.

These are some of my top faves from several "natural" haircare lines.

I know you mentioned not being fond of a few, but, I'll go with the idea that perhaps you haven't tried these specific ones.

Aubrey Organics - Calagula shampoo (great for oily, listless hair,) Chamomile shampoo (low lather, but, very gentle and smells like sunshine.) GPB conditioner... a staple. Blue Green Algae mask - this smells horrible, like moldy yeast, but, WOW the shine and healthy hair afterwards Shock

Nirvana Haircare - the Cherry Almond conditioner is fabulous. I don't even like cherry almond scents normally. It works so well I look beyond it Laughing

Giovanni - I love the Smooth as Silk shampoo and conditioner and the Leave-In.

Kiss My Face - the children's leave-in smells like honey water and is a great detangler for my fine hair.

Alba Botanica - Gardenia conditioner. Mmmmm... works wonderfully and smells divine.

There are lots more, as I remember, I'll add them Laughing

I just remembered something-- they now sell Carol's Daughter products at Sephora. I've never used them, but I've drooled over them. I believe they're natural (not sure if they're specifically organic).

I find all organic shampoos to smell very....hippy. Laughing (which is ironic seeing as I'm quite hippy myself). I love the smell of Aveda, do any of the organic shampoos you mention above smell as good as Aveda stuff?

I agree with the Nature's Gate recommendation. They smell absolutely fantastic although I found I needed a break from them after a while as I began to get a dry and itchy scalp. I love Druide's shampoos - they are really gentle but their conditioners left me really disappointed. I find the consistency to runny and they don't really help release tangles like most conditioners do. But once again, the shampoos are great. As for John Masters, I have been eyeing his products for some time but the price has held me back. Maybe I'll treat myself one day and give him a try after hearing all these rave reviews. For now, I'll stick with Druide and Nature's Gate and possibly some Aubrey ones as well. I liked Avalon Organics shampoos as well but they have parabens so I am now staying away from them. Although someone in the forum mentioned that they have now changed the ingredients and have removed them. You may want to check them out as well. There are tons of other great affordable organic shampoos out there as well but for some reason I can't think of any other names. I'm sure your nearest good health food store will have a selection.

Thank all of you so much! A wealth of information...I am excited to try so many of them. I looked into the John Master's line and am planning to order some to try. So good to hear specific experience with it and the specific products you enjoy the most.

IN the meantime, I had to get something, and found a shampoo and conditioner at the local healthfood store which two people said performed well, and both do! It's UltraAesthetics MSM Shampoo and Conditioner. No chemicals, lots of nutrients, half the price of the John Master's. The scent is not my personal favorite, but it's "clean", herbal and very light, so for now, I'm ok using it. And my hair feels and looks GREAT.

In case it matters to you - Nature's Gate products contain parabens.

Interesting note, on the Saffron Rouge site, they say that Dr. H shampoo is exceptionally pure, but they don't recommend it for long hair, especially long fine hair.

I love Aubrey products, but we have very different hair.

Good luck.

Thank you for that note om Nature's Gate. I hadn't checked, but had the notion they were not ultra pure.

I am very concerned about parabens and avoid products containing them.

I wonder why they say the Hauschka shampoo's aren't recommended for long hair?? Mine's short, though.

Also, of the 3 I've tried of Hauschka, seems like it makes color fade. In fact, their basic shampoo (I forgot the name) is specifically NOT for color-treated hair (which mine is) and is actually used to take color out.

I have to add another rave for John Masters.

I am using the hair pomade.

My ultra-dry, frizzy, color-treated hair now has the most beautiful shine and glossiness. The trick for me that made this product work was to apply it while my hair was still wet. It didn't work when I applied it after my hair was dry and had some other styling products on it which were probably blocking the JM ingredients from penetrating my hair.

It is the only JM product I am using, so I would certainly recommend it for those looking for just one high-performing organic product to try.

I consider the $20 a great bargain, as it has ended my quest for *something that really works* and has ended my dissatisfaction with my hair.

After reading this post I started to wonder because I had never seen parabens listed on any of the shampoos or conditioners I tried from Nature's Gate, so I checked it out at my healthfood store again and lo and behold, no parabens were listed in the ingredients. I went on the website though and they do list parabens in some of the products. They are however, the same products I checked out. I am now starting to wonder if parabens just aren't listed on the Ingredients for the products sold in Canada and if not then why. This is bugging me. It just sucks to be misled about products and to find out later that they weren't as great as I thought.

Hi Wildflower, I was pretty sure Nature's Gate had parabens because I knew I had read the labels and not purchased the products in the past for that reason. Before posting here I checked the website and found that the ingredient list included parabens. Perhaps they have changed their formulation and removed the parabens?

I know a couple of "organic" companies faced quite a few customer complaints about 2 years ago because customers realized that the products were not as pure as the organic label led them to believe, and some of them changed their formulations. I would find it surprising if they still listed parabens on the website if this is the case, but you never know. You might want to call and ask.

"Organic" products that are not quite what you would expect are a real pet peeve of mine.

Eek! The John Masters stuff looks wonderful, but costs almost twice the US price over here in Rip-offland (UK)! Shock

Anyway, does anyone with frizzy/curly/dry hair use it - and if so, which products and how well does it work at enhancing curls, please?

I'm also considering the Ojon line.

I use their calagula (not sure on the spelling) shampoo which REALLY helps with my itchy scalp. Their swimmers conditioner is REALLY nice and nourishing, I love it.

I have fine, thick hair with an oily and itchy scalp and it's colored. I agree with the performance...I've been looking around for salon quality natural hair products lately. Waiting for my MOP order to arrive, I will definitely post a review after I try them out!!
