Anyone into mysteries..the madcap, funny kind or Victorian brooding kind??
I've exhausted Anne Perry-one more murder on a foggy London night & I may very well do myself in.
Martha Grimes-all read & reread.
Elizabeth Peters-my all-time favorite-the Amelia Peabody series. Victorian era Indiana Jones..hysterical but erudite.Must read-especially if you love intelligent, funny victorian mystery/adventure/mayhem with an Egyptian archaeology theme. The author is in her 80's & writes a book a year. I've just read the latest. She'd better stay healthy.
Any other favourites?? |

Philip Pullman has done a series of Sally Lockheart mysteries. Haven't read 'em myself, but thoroughly enjoyed the telly adaptation of "The Ruby in the Smoke". |

I used to really enjoy Agatha Christie novels but it's been a while since I read one. I am now playing a video game based on her "Murder on the Orient Express" though. The book is much more interesting though. LOL |

I just rediscovered Agatha Christie. I'd read all her books several times over as a teenager, but hadn't really bought any as an adult because I could only find them in rather cheesy paperback form.
Then, about a month ago I discovered that an American publisher was re-releasing her books in hardcover. They're really nice; the cover art and dustjacket are attractive but they only cost around $10 USD. So, now I'm enjoying them all over again. |

marina, have you read the Elizabeth George's series - Inspector Lynley. There are about 15 or so. They don't go in chronological order so you can pretty much start anywhere. She's a very talented writer.
Ruth Randall (sp?) series. I haven't read them yet but they are on my list. |

I've completely frogotten about E. George..thanks. Her books are certainly thick enough. I hate spending $$ on a book that I could easily finish in one night. I'm always teased about buying books according to weight. Ruth Rendell is great too. What I like about Elizabeth Peters though, is you get a very intelligent, well written mystery with fully developed characters & get to laugh out loud as well. She's one of a kind. |

this book doesn't quite apply to either genre, but it is quite good and definitely meaty: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. it's well written and i know at least some of the places have to be familiar to you. i think you'd enjoy it. |

Oh Catski,
The woman in white is one of my all time favs. Also, the Law and the Lady, from Wilkie Collins ...and the moonstone.
Just thinking about these books is giving me a pick-me-up! |

If it's mystery that I'm after, I would reach for books by Mary Higgins Clark. My favourite book by her would have to be "All around the town". |

An enthusiastic seconding of the Raymond Chandler and Wilkie Collins suggestions! I'd also recommend Dashiell Hammett (The Thin Man, among others). |

Have you read The Summer of Katya by Trevanian? (although it actually might be classed as more of a suspense novel than technically a mystery)... |

Eiger is a favourite after a backpacking trip when the three guys i was hiking with put the tequila bottle in *my* pack and blamed it all on Eiger. Trevanian is just fab!
