Some studies have shown that taking birth control pills is linked to women getting breast cancer. Although ofcourse women get breast cancer without taking contraceptives, but studies show that oral contraceptives have a slightly higher chance in increasing your chances of breast cancer. I have recently studied this in my college.
But I have also heard Birth control pills to reduce your chances of breast cancer as well, i'm confused. |

I've also heard it reduces cancer. I'm not sure that its specifically breast cancer. It could've been ovarian cancer or something... |

I have actually heard the complete opposite. This was from a cancer center (when my mom had a growth needing to be removed in her breast). When they were asking her history, they asked about if she had ever taken birth control pills. They went on to explain that your chance of breast cancer increases after being on bcp continuously for 5 years (or some round # like that ). However if you go off of it for a year and then go back on, your chances are decreased and the 'countdown' of 5 or so years starts again. But don't take my word for it, as I am no doctor and do not have the name or anything of the center that had told us this. It has been widely advertised on all bcp pamphlets and at centers that it actually DECREASES your risk of ovarian cancer. But again, I don't know for sure, just wanted to add my 2 cents . Has anyone heard of those conclusions before? Just curious. |

it just bugs me how there is not a direct answer and information given to us about this topic. We are women and are prone to breast and ovarian cancer. many of us take birth control pills and when we go to the doctor, the doctor just prescribes us the pills without telling us the side effects and the MAJOR side effects like cancer.. because i guess the phamacy companies want to make money. |

I read somewhere on EDS that BC pills can cause blood clots if taken improperly.. Which can lead to deaths. |

Lisey, it is a well docmented and known side effects of BC pills.
There is a debate in medical community whether it increases the chances of getting breast cancer. It is also known to decrease chances of getting ovarian cancer.
5 years is the cut off time for taking BC pills continuously. I had never heard that being off it and getting back on decreases the chances of getting breast cancer, nor does it make sense.
I am not a doctor, but got the information from the soon to be one.

I was on the pill for about 8 years before I decided to go drug free and used a few different kinds within that period. Each pill type that I took came with an instruction pamphlet which outlined all the possible side effects. Breast cancer was ALWAYS listed as a possible side effect and it's occurrence increased if you were a smoker or had cases of breast cancer in the family. Women who suffer from blod clots are also warned not to take the pill. The pill does however, reduce the risk of ovarian and cervical cancer if taken for a few years. It can also help those with polycystic ovaries syndrome/disorder as this will enable regular menstruation and thus, will reduce the chance of ovarian cancer, which is more likely to occur if you have sporadic menstruation or amenorrhea. If breast cancer, blood clotting or strokes run in the family, then it's probably best to use an alternative method of birth control and if you're a smoker, you should definitely avoid the pill. So, you really have to evaluate the pros and cons. Just like any other type of drug there are always positives and negatives. Each of us has to make the best decision we can for ourselves. There is no right or wrong choice here. |

Huh, birth controls have been marketed as being safe for continuous use. The whole "you need to go off them and take a break thing" is a myth. I take tricyclen, and nowhere does it say my risk for breast cancer is increased after taking them for a long period of time. I read my pamphlet last week.
The fact of the matter is, everything is up in the air. Everything causes cancer these days, so I just say "meh" to all of it. |

they say a decrease in ovarian cancer, but that's usually seen in instances where the BC pill is taken consecutively over 7 or 8 years. |
