I was examining my skin last night because since I've come down with whatever evil virus resides in me my skin has become blotchy. It's as if pimples are thinking about coming up but they haven't yet made up their mind. Of course, I'm doing preventative maintenance left right and centre to make sure they don't come up, but the interesting thing is that it's only on the left side of my face that's blotchy.
I didn't think much of it until I went to bed and layed down my usual way.... on my left side of course! Well, I also sleep on my back, but left side is equally comfy That's when I remembered reading on other forums posts about the connection between breakouts and pillowcases. And, I remember reading that some ladies actually changed their pillowcases daily, I kid you not!
I change my pillowcases about fortnightly in winter and more or less weekly in summer (hot and humid). I'm just wondering how much merit the whole breakouts&pillowcases "theory" has. I mean it DOES make sense to some extent, the oils from your skin get onto your pillowcase. I'm just intrigued as to why most of the pimples that ever come up on my face do so on the left side. Any thoughts?

Mabsy,
I am a firm believer in dirty pillowcases causing breakouts. They teach you that in cosmetology school, and I have experienced it first hand. It's not just the oils from your skin & hair, but it's whatever hair products you use, and the environmental dirt & grime that cling to your hair that helps to clog up your pores. I change my pillowcase every other day or so. But I have shorter hair and use those waxy pomades.
BTW - I have always wondered what is a fortnight? I always hear that, but nobody ever seems to know.
Thanks! |

Mabsy exactly as pb said, the amount of products we tend to use these days (me included and I'm a guy so god knows what it's like for you!) it's better to change them every 3-4 days, less is even better, more often than not though I tend to wash out my my hair products before sleeping anyway but sometimes it's a case of just feeling too ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.
PB not sure if this is what you mean but by fortnight we mean 2 weeks. |

hey, i definitely think pillowcases can contribute to breakouts! everyday i sleep on my front with my face down and i get quite a few of them i tried once for a few days to sleep on my back, and im pretty sure my skin improved a bit but i couldnt keep the habit so now im back to my regular sleeping position i just try to wash it more often |

I change mine every other day, and use silk one too as its supposed to help prevent wrinkles! |

I remember my derm and even my MOM saying to chance pillow cases and also not to sleep on the sides with checks touching the pillow.
gosh it took me a long time to adjust sleeping but it does help.
Infact when you are down with illness, change it more often. |

Actually come to think of it...when I do get spots they are nearly always on my left cheek..the side I sleep....
Why didn't I think of that:?: |

Not sure about clear skin, but I know if you use a pillow case made of satin or silk, it help to prevent aging and reduce the fine lines.
This is because satin and silk is a lot softer than the usual cotton which is what most pillow cases are made of, and there is less rubbing during the night when you're sleeping. |

Geez I'm a grot! Ok, I'm going to start changing it every 3 days now and see how I go (any thing more frequent is just not realistic for me). But I refuse to change all bed linen every few days - it's just too much hassle! That stays on a per fortnight basis for now

Surprisingly I actually don't use all that much hair stuff and when I do I wash it out before I go to bed. That probably explains why my hair is always a mess and why I can never maintain the style that I "invested" in when I went to the hairdresser |

NOW he tells me! I've been keeping mine short for over 6 months now. It's time to let it grow. I have been meaning to grow it out but I caved every time my hair got to that stage where it's at a length you can't do anything with. I'm gonna be strong this time!

Mabsy! join the grot club with me! I'm so ashamed I'm gonna change them right now....well in a bit anyway
As regards sleeping positions, my mum always told me to sleep on my back as it causes fewer wrinkles on account of not mushing your face up. As always, I ignore her and sleep on my side, but I could do with an iron to smooth my face out next morning! On cold days it takes nearly an hour now and that's with all the massaging of serums etc! |

So did you change them or should I not ask? I picked up pillowcases on the way from work yesterday (I've got heaps but they're all "themed" so I needed plain ones). I wanted some flanellette ones but couldn't find any Got cotton/poly instead; for some reason I simply can't sleep on satin. Love satin but hate the feeling of it against my face.
Anyhoo, I changed mine last night. This is what I figure, I sleep on each side two days in a row. That's 4 days - then change them. Sounds doable.... I think
Btw, I read somewhere that when it takes those squishy lines a long time to fade that means that you're dehydrated. Not sure if it's true but it seems like it's got the right logic behind it. |
