I don't know how many of you have heard the story of the little girl that was taken from a holiday flat in the Algarve.
She has been missing over a week now. Although I am not religious I am praying for the safe return of this girl and all of the other children that go missing without a trace.
I cannot imagine what agony the parents are going through but I do know the grief of losing a child. There is no pain like it.
So please all my fellow skincare friends take a moment to pray for this child. |

Loopy, I usually laugh out loud when I read your posts (they're nutty half the time!). It doesn't take long though, to figure out that you're not just hilarious - you are intensely empathetic as well. Thanks for telling us about Maddy (and for sharing a bit of your 'stuff' as well). Big hugs to you. Let's hope and pray that Maddy is reunited with her family soon. Oh ya, and thanks for making me "pause" - sometimes that is all it takes to help me remember how friggin' lucky I am.

And what a beautiful little girl she looks. I personally don't think there's going to be a happy ending to this and I think that whatever happened to her, happened within the first 24hrs. I really, really hope I'm wrong. |

Loopylori, I have been praying for a happy ending to this since she went missing over a week ago. Just watching the news now is terrible and especially seeing her poor mother, her mental anguish is unbearable to think about, I don't know how she will cope much longer, and seeing how the Portuguese police are missing clues and evidence must make things so much worse. I really hope all the recriminations against the parents stop now as they are paying such a terrible price. I, too, was critical at first, but what's done is done and it isn't helping the family in their torment. |

There will be a vigil tonight here in Scotland with the participation of her uncle.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family for her safe return.

I absolutely agree with everything you have said.
Thanks to everybody who has and does pray for Maddy. |

This story hasn't been given very much coverage in the U.S. I read the background pieces on it after seeing loop's post.
The entire affair is just awful and it is made worse by the fact that the Portuguese police are notoriously incompetent in cases like this. They didn't even enter the apartment that the child was taken from until yesterday!
With that said, and although they absolutely have my heartfelt sympathy, what the hell were the parents thinking?!?!?! These are two intelligent, well heeled individuals - both physicians. The father is apparently a prominent cardiac surgeon. How could 2 people in this position leave a 3 year old child and 2 year old twins unattended???? The fact that they were dining at a restaurant that was close to their apartment isn't sufficient to satify me.
This is a terrible tragedy, to be sure. As we all do, I pray for this sweet child's safety. But, this is a tragedy (and it is a tragedy regardless of its outcome - I SAW a photo of the child's mother....sigh) that could have been avoided. |

Call me a cynic (or stronger if you must), but I think there's more to this than meets the eye. Maybe it's the press getting it wrong, but from what I gather, she was taken through forced shutters and a window was open when they got back. The apartment was visible from the restaurant they were dining in, so in that short space of time, someone has come along broken into the apartment, climbed in through the window and taken a 3 year old girl who would not go willingly OUT through that open window and broken into shutters and no-one saw it happen? What were the twins doing? They would surely have been screaming their heads off and no-one heard anything? What do the two little ones say happened to Maddy? Surely if she was taken right in front of them, they could say 'man' or something?
Do paeodophiles, child abductors take that risk or do they just snatch and run?
Now there's absolutely no trace of her whatsoever, no forensics, nothing.
How easy is it to get across the border to Spain? Can you just drive across without a passport from Portugal because of Europes open borders, or are there checkpoints everywhere?
The uncle bothers me as well. Whenever he's been interviewed, he's always grinning and so matter of fact about what's happened.
Maybe I've got it wrong but it does seem that something very odd has happened there. |

Hi Katee, I know what you are saying. Here in the UK it has been discussed on all the TV channels and news programmes and everyone agrees with you, but now the parents have to live with it for the rest of thier lives. I personally don't know how they will! I just think now that if all this condemnation continues, there will be even more tragedy. |

I agree that this should never have happened in the first place. Which is why I am praying for a miracle because to live with the loss of a child is horrendous. How much more awful must it be to know you were at fault. They are never going to get over this. You only need look at Maddy's mother to know that she is tormented by guilt. |

What a pity... It has happened in Portugal, just miles away from Seville, where I live...
I hope she appears safe and sound. |

Loopilori, I just re-read your first post, and now realise your total empathy with this situation. There are not really any adequate words I can say except I am terribly sorry for you, and indeed it must be the worst pain of all to lose a child, and you have my heartfelt sympathy. |

This story is getting minimal coverage here in Canada, but I read tonight that babysitting services were available but the parents opted to check in on the children while they ate. He checked at 9.00 p.m and when she checked again at 10.00 p.m she discovered Maddy was missing!! Helloooo!! While I have every sympathy for what the parents are going through and what the poor child is/was going through - these people ought to be locked up for abandonment!!!! Leaving children that young alone is a criminal offense and just makes my blood boil |

It was clearly an innocent error on their part and not one borne of neglect, but that isn't going to make it any easier for them to live with.
Generally, I think it's bad when parents are OVER protective. I often argue with my sister about this, because I think it's a big mistake to instill a sense of fear and insecurity (often bordering on paranoia) in children. However, Portugal is the center of the continental pedophile network and their legal system is unconscienably lenient in this area. It also serves as a major center for illegal adoptions. There's is a rather large British pedophile expatriate community in Portugal and it is centered in the resort towns. I'm quite sure the child's parents were TOTALLY unaware of this situation.
I suspect that one of these networks was shopping around for a client and that the child has been moved out of the country. The most common route would have her first transported across the Spanish border. It's why the laxity of response by the Portuguese authorities is so enraging.
Most people have no idea how large and how active these networks are. Unfortunately, I deal with aspects of the problem on a regular basis. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think this story is going to have a happy ending. |

The complex was especially geared up to cater for families and offered a child minding service so that parents could drop off their children and then go to a restaurant. They are both intelligent, educated people, so why did they not use the complex facilities?
Also when I have seen the news footage of the shutters afterwards with dark marks where they have been dusted for fingerprints, the shutters do not appear forced, they look perfect. I'm having trouble believing that someone has forced them, climbed through a window and taken a 4 year old out that way.
I have just watched a news report from someone expressing their opinion, not sure who he was, but he said he feels that Madeleine wandered off by herself, got to the supermarket and then was taken from there. Her scent was traced to the supermarket and then the trail went cold. |
