If something has a half life of 10 hours, but it says to take every 4 to 6 hours... do that mean the entire span of time is 14 to 16 hours? Or does the half life include the full span of time?
I hope that makes sense Thanks! |

The half-life of a drug measures how long, on the average, it takes to clear half of the drug from the blood. The longer the half-life, the longer the drug sticks around. Drugs with long half-lives, such as phenobarbital or brand-name Dilantin, only need to be taken once a day. Drugs with short half-lives, such as Neurontin, need to be taken 3 or 4 times per day in order to avoid excessive fluctuation of blood levels.
This information was taken from the web page of the Stanford University Medical Center.
You might want to ‘Google’ something like “what is the half-life of xxx, using the exact drug name to get more specific information regarding its half-life. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the informative post, Jagged. My boyfriend was talking about half life of a medicine, and I wasn't sure what he was talking about really, but too lazy to ask. LOL |

Jagged is correct. The ad of meds that need to be taken 2-4x/day is that if there is a side effect/drug interaction/etc, it's out of your system fairly quickly. Drugs with longer half lives provide the convenience of minimal dosing but the issue of staying in your blood for days. |
