I've read a lot about the benefit of fish oils/omega oils, but am confused over which to get. I prefer the Nordic Naturals brand. They sell: Omega 3 varieties (Omega 3, Ultimate Omeaga 3, DHA, EPA, EPAxtra), and Omega 3-6-9 varieties (Complete Omega, ProEFA, Omega Women). And so on.
Does anyone know what/how to choose?
Omega 3? Or Omega 3-6-9? Or what?
Thanks so. |

Hi jakee, I'm not a nutitionist or anything like that, but I prefer a complete EFA with Omega 3-6-9. Nordic Naturals is a fairly good line |

I'm currently taking the Cod Liver Oil from Nordic Naturals (recommended by my ND). |

I think Nordic Naturals are the best brand too, for this reason alone: their fish oil capsules are flavored, even the adult ones. That means you don't get those horrible fishy-tasting burps/whiffs after the fact - that alone was reason enough to turn me off of fish oils, until I found this brand. They are regarded as one of the higher-quality brands by most NDs anyway, but the flavor is what hooked me! Adult = peach, kids = lemon or strawberry, I forget. |

I have been taking daily 2tbsp of Omega Nutrition organic flax oil for several years.
It is a very good quality flax oil, they also have capsules. |

Which Nordic ones do you take and why?
Thanks. |

I take the Cod Liver Oil (adult Peach flavored version), mainly for cholesterol lowering. However, it has a lot of other benefits, such as helping combat depression, making skin more elastic and hair and nails stronger, and general digestive and overall health benefits. I take these in conjunction with organic flaxseed oil capsules with lignans, or sometimes I just use ground flax seeds or flax oil in cooking. I also take a multivitamin and a calcium-magnesium effervescent supplement. Most of these are at my naturopath's suggestion, and I can be quite lazy/bad about taking them, so I always keep an extra bottle of each kind at work too. And until this past weekend I lived separately from my boyfriend so I kept a set of all my supps (and skincare!) at his place too. But we just moved in together so now I have a whole extra set of everything - maybe I'll keep them in my car?! |

I forgot to mention, if you go with a different brand of fish oils just make sure they are "molecularly distilled" - that's the only way to make sure they don't contain the toxins that are often present in deep-swimming fish. |

I tried the Peach flavoured one but didn't like it. I'm currently the orange flavoured one. I find that it has less "fishy" taste compared to the peach one. |

I didn't realize they had multiple flavors for the Cod Liver Oil - I'll have to check that out, peach is not my favorite flavor! I would much prefer orange. Thanks, Yen! |

Why cod liver over 3-6-9? Curious. Thanks. |

I'm not sure about the 3-6-9 part, I was always just told Omega 3s, and specifically flax and cod liver for my high cholesterol. Some people say a balance of the Omega 3s, 6s and 9s is important, but I've also seen literature that one of them (either 6 or 9, I forget which) is actually harmful. I don't know - I just know pure, molecularly distilled cod liver oil is supposed to be good for a host of reasons, so my research kinda stopped there. |

nordic naturals is already very good but my son, who suffers from an autoimmune deficiency takes something called NKO, neptune krill oil which is supposed to be even better because in addition to providing the body with EPA and DHA, it also helps the body detox. |

I just read somewhere, maybe Time magazine webiste, Andrew Weill suggests 2 grams fish oil (over 3-6-9), likes the Nordic brand, among others, but not cod liver oil, which he says, has too much A and can be toxic. Not that he knows everything. But it's a start. |

The vitamin A only becomes a problem if you are taking very large doses. I've just started taking fish oils for depression and I need at least 1000mg of EPA (one of the fatty acids in fish oil) I wouldn't be able to take cod liver oil at this dose because I would be getting to much vitamin A.

Thanks Yen,
I'm disappointed about this as I've been trying to build up my post count slowly.
It doesn't seem fair as everyone who posts contributes to the forums success. Obvious abuse can be reported to the mods. |
