I used Retin A 0.1% twice about a week ago and it really made my skin peel a lot. It is still peeling now. My skin has a scaly layer and when I put sun screen on it shows up all the peeling layers very strongly.
I used a bamboo mitt to face brush and get the peeling off, but although my skin was flaking off the scaly layer remains and lots of peely looking skin still sticks on my face. I stop the brushing after about 30 strokes on each area as I don't want to overscrub my face and it starts to get sore at that point.

How do other people exfoliate when they use retin A? I don't want to be over aggressive.

Btw I always have peeling lips and I used to be susceptible to a little bit of dandruff in winter so I wonder if this means I have very fast skin cell turnover and need to exfoliate more than average.. I have tried using a gentle lip exfoliant everyday (although I often forget) and this seems to suit me so I might try to keep it up.

I used a muslin cloth with my regular cleanser every time I cleansed. That way it was only a small amount of exfoliation regularly and that seemed to be better (for my skin) than more aggressively scrubbing once/twice weekly.

Another option many find works well (on another forum) is to use an oil cleanser (a commercial one which contains emulsifiers so it rinses off). Massaging the oil around seems to loosen the flakes and they come off easier. I was using one when I first started taking low-dose Accutane and it seemed to help.

Clarisonic works great for me. I'm Obagi so use the tretinoin nightly and peel a layer of skin EVERY SINGLE DAY. The clarisonic works well it removing the flaking edges of the skin without removing skin before it's ready.

That's a good question! I also have lots of peely looking skin and people are constantly asking " what's wrong with your skin??"

I wonder if manual microdermabrasion products like NaturDerm Epidermix II or Perfect Complexion Micro Crystals can help?? These products certainly remove the flakes ( not totally) but using them everyday might be damaging, any opinions??

people are constantly asking me what's wrong with my skin too.. But as soon as I clean my face and get the scaly layer off, another scaly layer is on my face already.

Kristy, are you using one of the Obagi cleansers with the Clarisonic? And, what brush head do you use? I have tried and tried to use my Mia daily but I just cannot do it. My skin gets too dry using it daily.

What about using one of those microfiber cloths?
I've been using one from the NCN site for about six months, from Nanci, and really like it. I need to get a new one. Even using the wet cloth by itself on clean skin works well for me in getting rid of flakies. I usually do this in the morning before I put anything else on my face. l

I agree that you must be very careful with skin being treated with Retin A. Maybe a change in cleanser would help too?

Microfiber cloths are not working for me Sad In fact, I haven't found anything that can reduce the flakes. Rileygirl had recommended using Pumpkin peel but I don't think my skin wants to experience this cruel peel everyday!

LOL. Definitely NOT every day, RussianSunshine! Way too harsh to use daily! Have you tried a gentle enzyme product? I think La Roche Posay used to make a very gentle one that worked fairly well.

My suggestion: NIA24 has a scrub with very fine beads that might help. Using the NIA24 Skin Strengthening Complex in the daytime also helps the skin to rebuild the barrier that is compromised by the peeling caused by Retin A. However if you are on the Obagi regime, I'm not sure if that would be suitable as the Obagi regime is designed to give strong exfoliation so I don't know if you are "allowed" to repair skin barrier with other products whilst on the regime.

I just finished my 18 weeks of Obagi last night but for the last couple of weeks I've been using a creamy cleanser from Decleor that I had laying around. I'm not particularly partial to this cleanser other than the fact that it's creamy. I am using the delicate (blue) head. I was using the sensitive head but it was painful on certain areas. The delicate still is but not as much so and I hope it will lessen now that I'm going on maintenance. I also do not use the clarisonic twice a day--only at night when the flaking is the worst.

Yes, I think that is the one my nurse used to recommend with Obagi. That's too bad it is discontinued.

Hey RussianSunshine,

Are you using the NCN pumpkin peel. I got a sample of the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin peel, it only contains enzymes not any acids. I have really sensitive skin. I'll let you know how it works out. If you have a Sephora or Ulta near by I'm sure they would give you a sample!

SkinCareJunkie, I was referring to the Prefect Complexion Pumpkin peel. I use the NCN one only once a month.

I'm looking for a very mild exfoliting product that I can use 3-4 times a week to get rid of the flakes. Please, keep us updated about the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin peel. I know that PSF also makes 15% Pumpkin Enzyme Peel ( with acids) that is pretty gentle.
