Well after having used Redken's All Soft shampoo and conditioner for years, I wanted to move to an organic product. I selected Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo & 50/50 Balanced conditioner. I have been using them for about 2 weeks now and I cannot wait to throw them into the trash. My hair as never looked worse! I have kind of long straight hair (a few inches below the shoulders)that is naturally blond with added highlights every 2-3 months or so. My hair was in pretty good shape, not very dry, had a nice shine to it, etc. After two weeks of Giovanni my hair is extremely dull, course and is beginning to look like straw. I would really like to find an organic shampoo & conditioner that actually works...one that is better for drier hair and really helps with shine. Any suggestions? I also am hoping to avoid the extremely high end products like John Masters, I just choke at spending $26 for a bottle of shampoo. So whats reasonably priced (roughly $15 & under) that actually works?

Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you.

Have you ever tried Jason's Natural? I used occasionally and I am quite happy with it.

No one product works for everyone. I like the shampoo and a friend of mine with very different hair likes it as well.

I've had little success with Giovanni's shampoos and conditioners, too. I don't blame you one bit about John Masters, and I myself purchased a bunch of JM stuff and really didn't like it in the end! But everyone truly is different. And actually I'm warming to some of the JM stuff a bit.

If you decide you want to try them, PM me and I would be more than happy to decant you a bit of all my JM products so you can give them a fair try - I'd love to save someone else the trouble and expense I went to!

Aside from that, let's see - I like some Avalon Organics products, but not all, and same goes for Alba (same parent company). I never really liked most of the Jason's reformulations, myself. I always had REALLY good luck with Mountain Ocean's Coconut Repair Conditioner (or something like that) - hard to find, but a great product. I also frequently add an inch or so of Burt's Bees Avocado Butter to other conditioners to make them more emollient.

And by the way, I use Redken AllSoft as my staple too, but I have to use it on and off to keep it from building up and killing my hair texture, not to mention blocking out the moisture. I prefer organic stuff but the results you get with synthetics are just too good for me to pass up.

Good luck in your hunt!

I am surprised you went with the tea tree shampoo since it is quite drying and good for itchy scalps, dermatitis etc.

If you are in the US, go to giovanni's website and request shampoo samples for your hair type. They will send them for free.

I don't know if they are organic or not but I am on my 2nd bottle of Elucence Moisture Benefit shampoo and conditioner. I also emailed the company and got free samples and then got hooked.

I actually like what the Tea Treat one did for my scalp. It was often itchy. I also get acne at my hairline and I think it's helped with that.

But if it get ANYWHERE NEAR my eyes, not just in them, I want to cry for my mommy, it burns so bad. It's weird that it doesn't burn my scalp at all. But it's as if even the fumes from it burn my eyes.

I generally like this line and the price. So I'll just get a different one of their shampoos next time.

I didn't like this shampoo either. I bought it bc I have an oily scalp and I thought it would help. Now I use Jason's Thick-to-Thin shampoo and it works quite well...my hair feels a lot thicker anyway Smile.

Just wanted to add that I didn't have luck with this shampoo either even though it worked well at first. For me, I think the culprit is soy protein. I've noticed that any product that contains it will eventually give me coated and dull hair.

Thanks for the input Ladies Smile I am going to check the products that you have recommended, hopefully my next purchase will be a better one. I see that a few people really like Giovanni, so I guess it really depends on what type of hair you have. Obviously I made a mistake ordering the Tea Tree as I did not realize it was for treating scalp problems. The fact that I highlight my hair makes is more susceptible to getting dried out. I will be searching for a nice moisturizing formula.

Ginnieliz - Thank you so much for the detailed response. You are a real sweetheart for offering the JM samples but honestly, I am afraid to even try them for fear I will love it, get hooked on having to have it @ $$$ per bottle Shock (This happened with Ojon restorative treatment - tried it, loved it, gotta have it YIKES) I am interested in trying the Mountain Ocean one you mentioned - is it organic?

Again, thanks everyone

Haha, no problem, I totally know where you're coming from. It's why I refuse to try Ojon. Smile

The Mountain Ocean isn't totally organic or even all that natural (has parabens, I believe), but it's better than many similar formulas. And it reminds me in texture and effect of Aveda's Curessence, in case that's a helpful reference - the high protein content is noticeable. I found ingredients on Amazon (they don't list on their site):

Quote:
Ingredients:
Purified Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-6o Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Stearalkonium Chloride, Soydimonium Hydroypropyl Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Glutamic Acid, Methylparaben, Benzalkonium Chloride, Fragrance, Propylparaben.

Hope this helps!

Fairlady, I tried the Tea Tree Triple Treat, too. I didn't know it was the culprit for my poofy hair. I thought my hair was just acting out. I was actually just reordering it from vitacost when I read your post, so I removed it from the cart right away. lol Anyway have you tried the Trader Joes Nourish Spa shampoo (not the Refresh Citrus one)? It is only $2.49, and all organic ingredients. No SLS!

I like the Giovanni products myself. In fact it is the first organic/natural brand that I used because it was the brand they sell at Vitacost (they also have Jason Naturals but i'm not a fan) and they have great reviews. I like their other hair care products as well.

You can purchase natural products at Whole Foods but cheaper online at MotherNature.com and also Drugstore.com where you can read the reviews. During my search, I found this site

http://www.jujusalon.com/products.php

They have other brands. Maybe you'll find something you like. I'm curious about Max Green Alchemy.

If all else fails then go here:

<just kidding>
