Squalene is an excellent moisturizer. It can be obtained form shark liver, but there are other sources for it too: rice bran, amaranth seed, olives, wheat germ. Squalene is a good anti-oxidant too. It is absorbed quick by the skin and leaves a nice smooth feeling.
Emu oil besides being an excellent moisturizer can relief arthritis pain, and it has anti-inflammatory properties. It seems to be useful for different skin conditions like: psoriasis, eczema, cuts and burns, it is very good for mature skin. Also because it penetrates deep in the skin it is used as a penetration agent for other actives.
I like both, but emu is my number one choice, especially when I have a zit or after peels. |

good Squalene comes from olives...which is what I would choose...no animal products if I can help it....EDS sells some ;
"Ice Elements 100% Pure Squalene Oil (1oz / 30ml) $17.95 CAD Convert
Squalane is a natural extract derived from olive oil known to relieve dermatitis, sensitivity and nourish the skin afflicted by chronic dehydration. Squalane has a unique property of stimulating the healing process which aids in healing wounded skin." |

I use the Ice Elements squalane. It's great on it's own or over my moisturizer or mix it in with body lotion, hand cream or foot cream. On another board someone gave me a tip to put a few drops in liquid hand soap during the winter months. |

In my opinion Emu oil is better but for some people such as Vegan/Vegetarians would use Squalene oil from plants. |

How have you worked emu oil and/or squalene into your routine? Does it take the place of a moisturizer or do you use it in addition? |

I just read somewhere (can't remember where) that squalene is better for non acne skin skin where Emu oil is good for all. |

I lean towards squalene oil derived from olives. Although I've heard very, very good things and raves about emu oil, the thought of rubbing birdfat on my face just makes me cringe. That makes me very biased and probably not a great deal of help when it comes to comparing the two!
I have oily skin, although this time of year it's really more combination. I use squalene oil as soon as I wash my face am and pm I use one drop around my eyes and a more generous amount on neck and chest. I like to use it before eyecreams and other treatments because it's a pusher that helps other products penetrate more deeply.
For all over moisture, I tend to lean toward camellia oil since I need to be careful and not use too much rich moisturizer on my face.
Hope this helps,

I used both and I prefer emu oil. It feels it is better for my dry areas, while it does not make the 'normal' and combination areas greasier |

I personally used to find Emu oil a little heavy for my skin.
I have oily/combo skin and its very sensitive. So for me the squalene (olive one not shark) is perfect, its light, not too shiney - which as I am a guy was not the look I wanted with Emu, and really does moisturise well.
I read an article somewhere which talked about how they get the emu oil as well which really made me feel ill. I much prefer the idea of getting it from the plant as a result too but I know other people swear by Emu oil. |

I like squalane better. I like the texture of it...I've used squalane for years. |

Squalane. Emu makes me feel squiggy. |

I like squalane better. I read so much great stuff about emu oil, but it just doesn't seem to be right for my skin. I get blotchy dry patches from it. I've never heard of anyone else having a bad reaction to it though. I mix a few drops of squalane to my moisturizer. |

Squalene from olives for me. No need to kill Emus. Wonderful on the lips too. |

I like to mix a drop of the squalane with jojoba oil. I have fairly dry mature skin and this seems to moisturize and plump it up. |

I have tried emu when my skin was extremely dehydrated on accutane. It didn't make much of an impact and i still had the flakes on the surface. I've definitely heard better reviews about squalene as a moisturizer.
Emu might be good if you have redness though but again not for moisture! |
