Hello all, Bizarre question I know, but I was wondering whether or not Canadians use hot water bottles? I am planning to give one in a lovely cover as a gift to a friend. Actually do people in the US use them as well? I now have a good Christmas, not too pricey to send over - idea...
Thanks.

It really is a bizarre question! Laughing

I'm not Canadian, so can't really help you, but I'd imagine it might come in very useful during those cold, cold, long winters. Also, I don't know whether the recipient is female, but they can be jolly useful for easing period pain, too.

It's funny you ask. I was wondering the same. I have 2 hot water bottles from the UK, which I adore (one is pooh bear) and my cat loves curling up on it. But, DD lost the cap and I am at a loss trying to get a replacement cap for it in Boston. I've looked in several stores and get funny looks. I think they aren't very common. If anybody has any ideas how to get a spare cap for my hot water bottle, please let me know.

But to answer your question, I think that it's a nice gift idea.

Well I have 2 lying around somewhere. To be honest, after I discovered those electrical heater things (with settings!) I've kind of fogotten about them. The advantage is the electrical ones don't cool off.

You don't have hot water bottles over there? Shock

I must say that I've never come across any replacement lids, I'm afraid, and I live in the UK.

They must have them, they're readiliy available in pharmacies in Canada. I can't think of why they wouldn't sell them in the US

Well, I just called the pharmacy and they don't have replacement caps. Ggrrrr. And, they don't sell the hot water bottles either (Walgreens). Damn it, I want to find this cap!!!

Of course we use hot water bottles in the US! You can find them in drugstores. I have never seen replacement caps, however.

Sorry for a question that might seem a bit stupid, but what's a hot water bottle?

It's a rubber container that you fill with hot water and use to apply heat to your body.

Thanks all. My recipient is female and I am glad she will know what it is. We can get them in stores like Kmart, Woolworths, Target - everywhere in Australia (even in Summer).
Agent-oo cap you might have to buy another bottle plus cap! I don't think they sell just the caps here either.

yes! my parents have both a hot water bottle and the heating pad that Marina mentioned. Drugstores like London Drugs have the hot water bottles for $5 or $6 and heating pads for $27 or $28.

Hot water bottles aren't all that common in the US. But I love mine--I use it as a base on which to perch a bowl of yeasted bread dough, and on cold nights, slip in under the covers before I get into bed. Mmmmm...

I don't actually know anyone here who uses a hot water bottle. The darn things get cold anyway and end up on the floor. I much prefer flannel sheets.

I dunno about all Canadians but they have em here, and I personally love them.

I have seen cashmere hot water bottle covers sold in chi-chi stores here in Toronto so I think you're okay with that as a christmas gift.
