OK - #3 out of the way now.
The peeling did get better after backing off the products week #2, so I started adding them back in this past week and BAMMO! One night of Exfoderm and I was a flaking mess. My eyelids even peeled!
Not much else has changed except that I seem to be a lot more red now and still peel. A lot. I cannot use Exfoderm every night. Breakouts are not occurring, so that is a good thing!
May I suggest that anyone doing this start in the winter time. I don't know how I would survive going out in public without my turtlenecks and scarves!

The dermatologist originally set it up to do morning and night but because of my intolerance she said skip the morning one and add it back when able. |

That's very interesting. I have never heard of the Exfoderm being used at night, and definitely have not heard of its use twice a day. I was one of a group of people who did the Obagi at the same time on this forum. Anyway, what a few of us found was that it was the exfoderm (regular or forte - did not matter) making us "red". When we eliminated that or at least reduced its use to just a few times a week, we were not red. |

Thank you rileygirl for that info. I have grown tired of looking red at work and if the Exoderm is the culprit then I think I will cut back to just using it on days I'm at home. |

You're welcome, mamawalnut. I hope that it works for you! Very frustrating being red all the time! |

It was a bit awkward at times but yes, there can be lots of redness and peeling with Obagi and you can't be a hermit for too long. I initially chalked it up to "no pain no gain" but looking funny all the time has started getting old. I now only use Exfoderm on days I don't have to work and have also started using moisturizers on days that I am out and about. This has helped cut down on the red peely look while I'm in public and therefore made me a much happier camper. |

Sure you can go out. The red face can look like a mild sunburn and not everyone who uses obagi has it. Just make sure you use a very good sunscreen all the time. |

Does it slow down the progress if you only use the Exfoderm occasionally? I'd like to get through the the maintenance phase as soon as possible or at least within the 18 week period, but I agree, it's getting old looking so red all the time. I'm only 4 weeks in. I'm peeling a lot too but can apply the Action to help with that, but the redness, and I mean I'm really red, is what I'm having a hard time with. Thanks |

Hi gonatural,
The Exfoderm probably does help speed things along but some people don't use it at all or not as often and still get great results. As for me, it was getting to the point that I was about to quit Obagi entirely (but still use Retin-A) because of the recurring redness and resulting questions at work (Are you hot? Do you feel okay? Did you have a chemical peel or something?). I did strict Obagi for the first seven or eight weeks but have since started making changes just so I can continue with the program. I work three days per week so the days that I'm off I usually do Obagi by the book, although I am flirting with a few other skincare lines. Days that I work I don't do Exfoderm and I'll use some sort of moisturizer. I don't think I'm slowing progress down much at this point. I know early in the program moisturizers are not supposed to be used too much.
I guess I can't answer your question for sure but I know that for me I had to change something even if it did slow me down a bit. I'm glad I did and I'm even happier thinking about days to come when I can use cleansers and toners that don't dry me out so much and serums and moisturizers that actually make me look better instead of temporarily worse. I doubt I'll go the full 18 weeks but will probably instead start maintenance around 12 weeks, although I think I will continue to use Retin-A nightly. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! |

mamawalnut thanks.
I too have gotten all those same questions but at least you can't tell I'm blushing from being embarrassed. I think I'll try cutting back to everyother day and see how that does, since I'm still early in the program. |

Had a dermatologist appointment this morning and asked if doing the exfoderm every other day would slow things down and she said a little. I'm going to try two days on, one day off, and see if I can handle that.
Yesterday my face was very itchy but I couldn't even touch it with out it flaking. Even applying the action was tricky so that I didn't start flaking next to the area I was dabbing on.
Well, I'll tell you this morning I felt like a snake. I've had peeling around my nose and chin almost the entire time, but this morning when I washed my face I think my entire face peeled off! And actually it looks and feels great! I guess it's the new skin. The lines on my forehead and my laugh lines are less noticeable and acne scars on my cheeks are looking better. It's encouraging. |

Glad to hear that you've got some new skin coming through; that can feel very encouraging in the middle of all the redness and flaking. And hopefully you'll be able figure out a schedule with the Exfoderm that works for you. The guidance of your derm will be helpful.
I went ahead and aborted my Obagi mission this week. I had hoped to make it at least 12 weeks but couldn't make myself continue, although I am glad that I did use it for the time that I did. The cleanser and toner are pretty harsh on me plus I didn't want to use the hydroquinone products anymore since my face is now a bit lighter than the rest of my body. I had to buy a liquid foundation the other day in the lightest shade they made which is a first for me. I will continue with the Retin-A and even the Exfoderm since it's a good AHA product, as well as spot-treat a few dark spots with the Clear. I've been using some regular skincare products the last few days and my skin is appreciating the extra moisture; the dryness I'd experienced with Obagi had given me quite a few extra lines on the eye/cheek area and those are fading some already.
Good luck on your Obagi journey! |
