So I see all these creams with acai and pomegranate extracts in them touting their antiaging/antioxidant properties. Isn't clove oil the highest thing on the ORAC scale by far? Couldn't you then add therapeutic grade clove essential oil drops to a moisturizer for a cheaper (and more potent) alternative to some of these expensive creams as long as it was diluted properly and not applied to super sensitive skin? |

It does seem that clove oil is a potent antioxidant but there are also concerns that it could be highly carcinogenic. |

Everything I read about it being possibly carcinogenic is when it is ingested. ![Question](images/smiles/question.gif) |

So that's why the new Dermalogica Anti-age products have clove oil in them. I thought it was for fragrance (which I find intoxicating, by the way). Good to know... |

From my experience as well as extensive research on essential oils, Clove Oil is very much a mucous membrane irritant! I would suggest extreme caution in any facial preparations! The manufactures of any products containing Clove Oil may well be incorporating such a minute amount that it would be ineffective as far as benefits, we know companies do put things on labels just as selling points.
IMHO

You are right. Interestingly, clove oil is not on the fda's GRAS list of esential oils safe for consumption. |

Yet if we're lucky, we eat clove spice with every bite of pumkin pie! |

vanbergc,
I love the taste of the spice in pumpkin
pie as well as other recipes! The thing to remember is with any essential oil
these are extremely concentrated essences of all the good and bad of plant parts! Most essential
oils must be diluted before applying directly on the skin, one of the few exceptions is tea tree oil, usually used on a small area at a time.

Yep, understand the essential oil concept...have several dozen underneath my sink right now. I was using essential oils when they were still selling Pennyroyal. I have 2 bottles of clove in my stash. I don't ingest these...I do my research, thank goodness :) I personally have no problem using it on my skin, but I don't overdo anything.
I suspect there's a good drop of clove oil in a pumpkin pie though. I think just using your smarts is a good way to approach life! I try not to live life in fear...doesn't do my old bones any good. :D |

Yes I have quite a stash as well including pennyroyal great to keep bugs at bay! The thing about heating them is it evaporates them so quickly I find it hard to think they would be of much use in cooking! That is what my spice rack is for! I am not a fan of ingesting EO's but that is my personal opinion! To each their own!

Checking my "Consumers Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients" by Ruth Winters. THE authority. Clove oil is strongly irritating to skin and can cause allergic skin rashes. Its use in perfumes and cosmetics is frowned upon, although in very diluted forms it is allegedly innocuous. In 1992 the FDA proposed a ban on clove oil in astringent drug prodcts because it has not been shown to be safe and effective for its stated claims. |

SusieQ,
I agree that is why I posted earlier about the irritant nature of Clove Oil on mucous membranes, nose, mouth and eyes on the face. There have been deaths reported due to ingestion! It can interact with many rx meds, the list goes on and on. Anyone using any essential oil should learn everything possible about them before use!
