eyeshadows just dont do it anymore! I think I am starting to prefer matte shades. I think its more flattering to my eyes, and the shimmer is starting to look a bit garish! It could be that I use lots of eyeliner, so need to tone the eyeshadow a bit. |

Overly frosty shadows tend to settle into the creases we'd prefer to hide, so I've definitely toned them down! But I do still use shadows with a slight shimmer or pearl finish for a little bling; I prefer matte overall but like to enhance it with a little glow. And a shimmery dust right on the upper cheekbone really seems to open up the entire area like nothing else! |

You know...I think there are no hard and fast rules, really. Don't get me wrong, I've no desire to run around looking like a 21 year old whose prepped to go clubbing, been there - done that. I use IQBeauty's eye glows and they are not matte but very beautiful and subtle. So much depends on your lifestyle, frame of mind, condition of skin, ect. Blech to rules. |

I have given up a lot of the shimmer from "lash to brow" look, the past couple of years.
As you age, it really tends to make you look tired if you do too much.
I like to use a shimmer (in my color of choice) just above my lash line, but use matte from there up. It is really effective for me. It adds an extra little twinkle of the eye without dragging me down or looking too dramatic.
I should add that I have really large eyes, with a lot of space between the lash line and my brows... so the shape your eyes makes a difference too |

I agree that a touch here and there is much more flattering than putting it everywhere, but I think that is true for all ages and not just older women. It reminds me of jewelry and accessories--less is more and sometimes it pays to assess and then take one or two pieces off, or, in the case of makeup, tone it down here and there.
I love makeup too much to say no to anything just because I'm not in my 20s anymore, and I don't want to be restricted by other's so-called rules, but I don't want to look ridiculous either. Fortunately, I'm a performer so I get to play a lot and can even rock glitter when it's appropriate ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

I prefer a subtle shimmer to either flat matte or frosts these days. I really like Bobbi Brown's shimmerwash shadows and some of Nars' shades. Cairo is a very pretty pale taupe with a touch of shimmer, Ashes to Ashes is a silvery taupe with a bit of purple and a bit more shimmer, and the new Abyssinia is a gorgeous very pale peach with a pearly sheen. |

I think this is the whole idea behind Lauren Hutton's Face Disc. She's a big proponent of no shimmery stuff on older women, and while I play with both shimmery stuff and matte stuff, I definitely think shimmery makeup is more noticeable. Sometimes I'm okay with that, though. If I ever want to look like I'm not made up, I actually wear a matte brow powder instead of eye shadow. (Not because it's better than a shadow, just because it's sheer and matte and the shade is too dark for my brows so I want to use it up somehow.) Works like a charm! My eyes are more defined but it looks natural. |
