RAVE: Stila eyeshadow duos - huge thumbs up!

I haven't tried anything from this line but popped into the Fred Siegle Studio in Santa Monica a few weeks ago and got a Stila makeover. I was so impressed with how my eyes looked I simply couldn't walk away without the eyeshadow and Wet mascara!

I got the Seafoam green duo and it really makes my brown eyes pop. At $20 it's certainly more expensive than drugstore eyeshadows, but it's very pigmented and a tiny amount goes a long way. They are also very buildable; with only 2 colors, you can really get a lot of depth out of this. Long lasting as long as I use UDPP underneath, eyeshadows don't crease on me.

I also liked the technique the Stila MA used to apply this and learned something new! Instead of the side to side motion with a brush, she loaded it up with the lighter shade and patted it all over my eyelid and into the crease. This kind of gave me a sheer barely there coat of light green all over. Then she wet the tip of a liner brush, dipped it into the darker shade and used it as an eyeliner. Back into the light shade and into the crease and outer V for additional dimension without going over the top. Finished it off with a coat of Blue Wet mascara [which, sadly, I don't see on their website so it must be discontinued]. The wet mascara just gives your lashes a slightly wet look but needs to be used on top of another mascara since it doesn't offer any thickening.

I'm more intrigued by this line and will very likely try more. Some of their Spring 2008 line looks very exciting!

Sounds beautiful athena! I've got a Stila eyeshadow quad that I enjoyed but haven't used in a while; the quality was nice - I need to break it back out. Smile

Was the finished result of your eye makeup day-appropriate or was it more of a nighttime look? I love eyeshadows but tend to gravitate toward neutrals or pseudo-neutrals. The brightly colored shadows look so nice in the pan but I'm scared they would look clown-like on me. Most of my makeup is for daywear (I have a young child so not much partying going on here Very Happy

) and I was wondering if some of these brighter shadows could be used for day. What do you think?

mamawalnut, I'm not much for the nightclub look this duo is completely appropriate for the day. Using a fluffy brush to apply really creates a light, subtle wash. Not clownlike at all. Laughing

For a bolder look, you can apply more layers but I usually don't.

The only problem I can see with this duo (or any other duo for that matter) is that because I tend toward more muted daytime looks, I'll use the lighter shade more quickly than the dark, since I use the darker green mostly for a little emphasis in the crease and/or an eyeliner.

I tried a very light wash of the dark green all over the lid and paired it with a yellow/brown shade from MAC as well. It looked subtle and certainly refined enough for daytime.

Thanks athena. I am going to try playing around with some of my colored eyeshadows I've got laying around and see if I can pull this off. I went on a sample spree several months ago and ordered a bunch of littls pots of MAC and BE loose shadows on ebay and some of them turned out to be a little brighter than I had thought they would be. I had put them aside but I'm going to see what I can do with them. If I can figure it out I may have to try this green Stila duo since you said it makes your brown eyes pop. I've got brown eyes too and making them pop without a lot of eye makeup is a challenge.

Ooh, let me know how it goes mamawalnut - I don't know about you but playing with makeup can be kind of fun. Next weekend is my sister-in-law's birthday, so I planned on giving her and my nieces facials, then we'll all do makeovers Laughing

It's always more fun when you have someone to experiment with.

I am loving the look of non-neutral colored shadows! I had gotten so used to my many shades of browns, creams, taupes, etc... that I'd gotten stuck in a bit of a rut. One wine-colored shadow in particular (BE's Shantung) looked fabulous with my brown eyes. I tried some other colors as well and some worked while others, well, not so much. Blues in particular didn't seem to look right on me. I couldn't find any green shadows to try but I've got a green Fluidline liner that I think I can smudge a bit to soften it. I am going to continue trying different combinations and see what all I can come up with. I also tried my Stila palette again since I had forgotten about it for so long. The quality really is superb; they are really pigmented. Thanks for reminding me about how nice Stila shadows are. I guess that's the trouble with having too many eye shadows - I forget what I've got stockpiled.

Your girl-party sounds like too much fun! I'm sure you all will enjoy the pampering of the facials and then the fun of getting made over. I don't have any family or close girlfriends that enjoy skincare or makeup like I do so I get my girl-party fix here on the forum. Very Happy

Right back atcha mamawalnut! I do know what it is to get into a makeup rut. I had to go to a MAC counter and get a makeover to pull me out of it, really! I had been wearing the lovely but muted/neutral Dr. Hauschka eyeshadows exclusively for a couple years! It's good to reminded that we can pull off other looks without going overboard! Laughing

Yeah, I have a lot of eyeshadows stockpiled too; finally reduced it a little by trading on the Specktra forum. In turn I was introduced to a new brand of eyeshadow [review to be posted shortly] It's too easy to reach constantly for the same shadows, forgetting what others will look like. I too have a hard time finding shades of blue that look right on me but tend to lean toward teal, turquoise or aqua; it's not just a matter of eyecolor but skintone and although I love many shades of blue, I'm finding the most suitable shades of blue to wear on my eyes are the same shades of blue in my wardrobe. Odd, yes?

Yeah, it will be a lot of fun and while no one in my family understands my obsession with skincare, at least the nieces [both are 21] can appreciate the makeup THANG! I'm lucky and excited to see what they come up with, just as I'm looking forward to showing one of them how to apply eyeliner the RIGHT way without that gothy kind of "I fell asleep with my eyeliner on and forgot to wash it off" kind of look! Sometimes I get so enthused about products I just have to talk about it; it's wonderful to have a place where we can share our finds with kindred spirits, isn't it? I'm so glad you're happy with Stila shadows! I only discovered them recently when I did an MUA swap, and I've been wowed by all the colors and textures. Their matte shades are really finely milled and very soft and smooth, and their shimmery shades flatter me too. They've got some great new duos (I was looking at Seafoam for myself the other day!) and the packaging is fun too. I love swappable magnetic stuff.

Never been a big fan of their mascara, but you know I'm ridiculously faithful to the Dr. H. I've been accumulating more and more Stila shadows via swaps, and it's become my favorite brand of e/s!

OOh ginnie, I'd love to hear about their other duos you've picked up. I have my eye on their Summer palette that contains 6 shadows. Wish I had a picture of it; it's not available yet but I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah, as far as mascara goes I have yet to stray from Dr. H volumizing; the green mascara looks great with green shadows, then once it dries I'll apply a coat of Stila's wet mascara for additional sparkle and shine. I'll have to head back to Santa Monica to pick up some more wet mascara since it's not available on their website. Part of the fun will be in the journey! Laughing

Oh, I misspoke -- I've never tried a duo yet, but I've tried many of their singles (and loved them all!).

The ones I've adored are Cloud, Shore, Wheat, Diamond Lil, and ONE more but the sticker's worn off the bottom, so I can't tell! I think it may be Storm (it's a deep grey color, but not as shimmery as what Stila's website seems to indicate).

And I finally invested in some UDPP as primer, and I'm totally wowed (like all of you) -- the stuff is AMAZING. The only problem is that it's way less forgiving now, and harder to do subtle blending, etc. You really have to get it right on the first try!

I also received a Stila blush in a Makeup Alley swap, and even though the color wasn't perfect on me I was totally blown away by the consistency. It was SO finely milled and shimmer-free that it looked completely natural and subtle on me -- not like my mental image of powder blush from when I was a kid. (That bright-pink cakey-looking streak that was so popular, ya know?) So even though that pan ("Hint", I believe) was a bit too warm-toned for me, I'd definitely go back to Stila for powdered blushes!
