I have a question for all you intelligent ladies here I have a moisturizer with SPF 30 with ingredients of 6% Zinc Oxide & 7.5% Octinoxate... Then if I applied another layer of tinted moisturizer SPF 15 with 3.95% of Titanium Dioxide over it, is it going to increase the protection? I hope it does. Pls pls reply!! Thanks!!! |

Definitely NOT. If anything, you risk tampering with effectiveness. Moreover, anything with minerals applied over avobenzone will destabilize it. |

Yes and no.
Yes - A lot times we don't apply enough sunscreens and that will not provide the sufficient protection indicated by the SPF index. By overlaying products, you are more likely to use enough amount to give you the protection you need.
No. SPF 15 plus SPF 30 does not give you 45. |

Thanks iaimei & cristaline for replying.
I know that SPF 30 & SPF 15 won't give me SPF 45. h...maybe my question is not that clear. I'll try to clarify things.
I have a moisturizer with SPF 30 with ingredients of 6% Zinc Oxide & 7.5% Octinoxate. Then I applied another layer of tinted moisturizer SPF 15 with 3.95% of Titanium Dioxide over it. They're all different ingredients and they don't deactivate each other. So my question is, will the added 3.95% of Titanium Dioxide be providing extra protection? I hope that clarifies things a bit... |

I have read some information released by the Cancer Society of NZ and it stated that layering chemical sunscreens does not increase SPF, no mention of physical though. But I avoid layering because different company's products use different types of sunscreen actives and you cannot guarantee that the products you layer will not degrade when they interact.
I would assume that adding extra physical sunscreen does increase protection, because in any higher physical ss the total % of TiO or ZnO is always higher. |

I don't think that layering sunscreen makes protection more effective. I think that it may be doing the opposite. When you put too many products on your face, you can also risk a breakout, so be careful of that as well. |
