Many of us ladies love to go out and buy products that promise us healthier looking skin, less wrinkles and more. So what are in these products? For most, looking at a product's label may be similar to learning a new language. So for everyone who is confused out there, here is a list of some common ingredients that are in beauty products. Learn them and begin to understand what is in the product that you are buying!

OCTYL METHOXYCINNAMATE: This is a sunscreen and claims to protect against the sun's harsh UVs.

TRIPLE PURIFIED WATER: The average amount contained in a product should be around 65% for proper moisturizing effects.

MINERAL OIL & ISOPROPYL PALMITATE: This should be avoided if you have oily skin. These two ingredients are actually emollients but they do tend to clog pores.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL: This ingredient binds water to the skin. It is often found in oil-free moisturizers.

The following ingredients are emulsifiers meaning that they keep the water and oil in the product from separating. This is what gives the ingredient a smooth texture.
GLYCERYL STEARATE SE
CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE
SODIUM DIHYDROXYCETYL PHOSPHATE
CETEARYL ALCOHOL
STEARIC ACID

Two ingredients that are known to improve the health of your skin are:
TOCOPHERYL ACETATE (VITAMIN E)
ALOE EXTRACT
But beware, in most products these ingredients are used in very low percentages so they may not even be effective.

SIMETHICONE: This is an emollient forming from silicone. It softens the skin and adds the slippery texture to a cream.

BENZOPHENONE-3: This is a common sunscreen ingredient. It prevents the product from breaking down when coming into contact with sunlight.

ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE: An emollient that can be comedogenic (cause blackheads or acne).

CARBOMER: This thickens the texture of the cream.

mineral oil doesn't clog pores though, it can occlude them, but it can't clog them because it's too large to enter.

a lot of people don't like the texture so that's reason alone to avoid it.

Thanks Susanskin. I've read some of your other threads and find them very helpful. I'm always happy to listen to your advice!
I completly agree that mineral oil is not unhealthy for skin. It can cause breakouts if it is not washed off thoroughly with water. So make sure to wash off all access oil. But mineral oil is actually the best cleanser out there.

SusanSkin, thank you for sharing your expertise! This is very helpful for those of us (like me) who are in the "early learning stage" of establishing the best skin care routine addressing our individual challenges.

For mature skin, there does seem to be common issues like fine wrinkles, large pores, skin discoloration, uneven texture. In the perfect world, I wish there was a product with the best ingredients addressing these concerns, omitting ingredients deemed not good for the skin and a routine kept simple and easy! I know, such wishful thinking!

I agree with blesstd - why not more age related products?
