Hello,
I'm new to this forum and have some questions, so please bear with me. ^_^
I’m really thinking about getting the Obagi system, but I am really scared of the excessive peeling. I’m currently using Topix Glycolic Pads 10-2 pads at night. During the day, I use the Topix Solvere 2% Saliclylic Acid and Topix Solvere Acne Clearing Gel as well as their Fortified Moisturizer with Vitamin A, C, E, green tea extract and Co-Q10. Due to acne flare-ups, (because I like to pop them) it gave me some discoloration and some other hyperpigmentation problems.
My question is if I get the Nuderm set for oily sensitive skin which a good set at another place, can I substitute salicylic pads for the toner? Also, once I run out of the 10% Glycolic Acid pads I will use the Nuderm, but can I just use the Exofoderm twice or once a week or skip it?
Note: I used Retin-A 0.025% in the past, but my dermatologist said no one is using that anymore and sold me Glycolic Pads at an exorbitant price, but thank god I found Topix for ¾ the price cheaper…
Anyway, I looked at the ZO Health Offects TE-Pads Acne Pore Treatment and Topix’s ingredients:
Topix
Active Ingredient:Salicylic Acid USP 2%.
Inactive Ingredients:Ammonium Hydroxide, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Disodium EDTA, Glycolic Acid, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Polysorbate-20, Purified Water, Sodium Benzoate, Zinc PCA.
ZO Health TE Pads
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Salicylic Acid 2.0%
OTHER INGREDIENTS
Water, SD alcohol-40B, Propylene Glycol, Urea, Triclosan, Glycolic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Santalum Album Extract, Phellodendron Amureuse Extract, Hordeum Distichon Extract, Spiraea Ulmaria Extract, Camellia Sinensis Extract, Artemisia Vulgaris Extract, Plantago Lanceolata Extract, Crithmum Maritimum Extract, Fragrance.
The problem I have with TE pads it’s really expensive and it has fragrance. This why I think the Topix is better for my skin.
Thank you for reading.

I am going to defer all the Nu Derm stuff to Rileygirl, but I did want to mention that you should consider getting a new dermatologist.
Retin-A (even .025%) is one of the VERY few, consistently proven products that can REALLY rejuvenate your skin. Any derm that is pushing glycolic pads sold via his office instead of RA is only trying to increase the amount of your money going into HIS pocket. |

I agree! Any derm who says "no one is using that anymore" to Retin A is not a knowledgeable derm. Sounds like he tries to pressure people into buying his overpriced pads. Salicylic acid IS an effective treatment against acne, so maybe if you were not responding to the Retin A, he decided to give the salycilic a try? |

No, the salicylic acid I did on my own after he was trying to get me to make an appointment for Glycolic 5-2 pads. Even though, I known him over 15 years, and I know people have to earn a living, but I felt charging me triple the price for a product that didn’t need a prescription was little over the top. I did see a different dermatologist but at that time, I stopped using the Retin-A because I believed my main dermatologist. When I was using the Retin-A, they both said that I should only use a pea size amount and I will breakout before I began to see results. The other dermatologist said that Retin-A should last for years. I still have the cream, but I don’t want to use it since its 8 years old and I still have Melanin 3% hydroquinone.
Due to squeezing the white and black heads and years without using a sunscreen, I now have what you call “hyperpigmentation”. Someone suggested that I use Tri-Luma, but I don’t like the side effects. That’s why I was really thinking about the Obagi line since its good with hyperpigmentation. |

Hi, Schmo. Wow, these are really loaded questions. Here is my 2 cents worth. If at all possible, I would see a derm (your current or another), to start the Nu Derm. They can really help you with a routine for your skin.
That said, if you don't want to see a derm and want to try this on your own, I would suggest stopping everything you are using now and just using the Nu Derm products, along with the Retin A (this is a major component in the Nu Derm system) for at least 6 weeks before you start "playing around" and substituting products. The first 6 weeks are really important in the cycle of "out with the old". I would not substitute the salicylic pads for the toner, as the purpose of the toner is to get your skin to the correct pH so the products can penetrate better.
With the products that you are using on your skin now, you may or may not have the excessive peeling. It really will depend on your skin. The main cause of the peeling is the Retin A. If you start with the lower dose RA, I bet you won't have much in the way of peeling. Eventually you want to move up to at least the .05% RA, but if you are scared of the peeling, the .025 is an option for starting. The redness will come from the Exfoderm and a little bit from the Clear.
I would not use the ZO TE pads along with the Nu Derm system. You will be excessively dry! But, an option would be to use the ZO Growth Factor Serum, either once a day or twice a day after all your other products are applied. This product can help counteract the redness you will have (but I warn you, it will sting!).
Hope that helps, schmo! |

I spoke to an esthetician and read what another one said on @ make me heal said for best results it must be used as a system.
So I decided to see a reconstructive plastic surgeon and she recommends Obagi and performs the Blue Peel. However, I am starting out with a Glycolic Peel, but I’ll definitely need to switch to Nuderm to prep for it.
I really didn’t have that much of reaction when I used Retin-A @ 0.025%, I peeled mildly for a week; along with Novacet Lotion.
Until I see my surgeon, I’ll just stick with the 10-2 Glycolix Pads, but I will add the Professional C-serum @15% during the day since you can use that alone. As for a hydrator, I may add the Nia24 recovery complex at night.
I might have up the Glycolic to 20% since my skin is tolerating 10%.
Oh can I add Sunfader for a sunscreen?
Thank you RG and Happy Holidays! ^_^ |

That is great that you are going to see someone and start Obagi with them. That is really the best way to do it!
You can add the sunfader in, but just be aware a lot of people have problems with the sunfader causing burning. So, if you use it and it is causing you reaction, just go with the Obagi Nu Derm regular sunscreen. The one is a great sunscreen.
Good luck, schmo, and keep us posted on how you are doing on the system! |
