Our school is having a seminar from a group of people advocating safe cosmetics. The pretalk info is pretty scary. L'Oreal, Maybelline, Cover Girl and several others have lipstick with high enough lead content to cause symptoms and possibly brain damage. All lipstick brands haven't been tested (this info is old the study was 2007). Also pthalates are said to be present in many hair and deoderant products at levels that cause damage to young boys particularly hormone problems.
One of the speakers is Stacy Malkin who wrote a book on Cosmetics called "Not Just a Pretty Face". I haven't read it. It was not published by a main line publisher but if the lipstick testing is accurate it is a real problem. 0.65ppm of lead in something you put on your mouth is not funny. Absorption depends on the form but since people use lipstick several times a day and it builds up in your body it is a real and not alarmist concern. |
