I have decided one of the supplements I will take is Fish Oil. However after a little research, I see that I am a little confused. It seems all omega 3's are not the same. Nicholas Perricone on his webside, sells omega 3 as Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil which he says is better as it is purer. I wonder if the others are just as good or is Alaskan Fish Oil the superior one? |

the capsules I take are called "Salmon oil Omega-3 700mg with vit.E and Selen".
you mean it is critical for salmon oil to be from Alaskan salmon? - don`t think so. |

Dr Perricone does a good job in marketing, but I believe his products (particularly diet supplements) are way overpriced.
When I was immature and uninformed (last autumn), I bought a one month supply of Dr Perricone's Super Berry powder to the price of $50, plus shipping overseas and VAT. It's not worth the money.
I think you will be happy and healthy with regular omega 3 fish oil capsules from a reputated brand. |

I am taking the same oil, and very happy with it. It is very important that it doesn't have an after-taste. It is a very good quality oil. |

My Naturopathic Doctor recommends both Nordic and Carlson brand fish oils and cod liver oils. I've tried both Nordic and Carlson brand products. I prefer Carlson. I find Nordic products a bit too fishy tasting. |

The more important thing is that the fish is from cold water sources and is filtered for toxins. Cold water fish is less likely to have more toxin buildup. I like the ones from Geniune Health. |

I use Barry Sears's oil from the Zone website. It's kind of pricey but a little bit goes a looooong way. It's powerful stuff.
There has been some research that has shown that fish oil supplements can spin off free radicals so be sure to eat lots of antioxidants if taking this.
Also, storing in the freezer helps it stay fresher and last longer.
Just my $0.02. |

If you have a prescription medicine insurance plan and your doctor will prescribe them, Lovaza is a good option:
www.lovaza.com
www.lovaza.com/consumer/about/
I just pay a prescription copay for them. |

I take Krill oil. It's supposed to be more "bio-available" than fish oil. Who knows.

I take a mix of fish oil and krill oil (actually, I think most krill oils contain fish oil, as well).
I do have faith in krill oil. It has a bright red colour due to its high content of the powerful antioxidant Astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin is the most commonly occurring red carotenoid in marine animals, like salmon, shrimp and krill. By taking krill oil one gets both Omega 3 and antioxidants in one capsule. |

What do u mean by "fish oil supplements can spin off free radicals"? Also, wat happen if not enough antioxidants are taken? Sry for sounding dumb
Also, many ppl said that Omega 3 or Fish Oil is good for your skin in terms of getting rid of fine lines & wrinkles. I've been taking it for about a month or so but don't seem to notice much improvement. Does any of you ladies here notice any changes in your skin at all? Pls share, thanks! |

I notice my skin is much drier if I don't take an Essential Fatty Acid supplement (including fish oil).
If I take Hyaluronic Acid with Biocell Collagen II, I notice my eyes don't itch from dryness and allergies, that my skin is more plumped up, and my skin is even more hydrated than with just EFA's. |

Lunarmm is right. Lovaza (formally Omacor) is excellent and ultimately much less expensive because your Rx coverage will cover it less the co-pay. I have been on Lovaza (Omacor) for over 3 years. You need to get a prescription from your doctor. I have a problem with joint inflammation (auto immune related) so there is a valid medical reason for my script.
For my 3 yr old son & husband I use Nordic Naturals. |

Thanks fairlady & lunarmm for replying. It would be nice if insurance can cover the cost of the Omega 3 but it's only if you have a certain disorder, right?
Also, I know that different brand of Omega 3 might give different results. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with this brand?
http://www.genuinehealth.com/english/pbn/o3mega.php?id=43§ion=184
It contains Omega 3 as its main ingredient and also some other beneficial antioxidants for the skin too. I would like to try it but it costs around $40-50/month....not sure if it's really worth it or not. |

To be honest, I don't notice any difference in my skin, but I have less pain in my hips when hiking, walking, etc. Pretty cool. |

You can ask your doctor to prescribe it as a preventative. That's what my doctor did - my cholesterol was in normal ranges but she wanted to boost my good cholesterol HDL in ratio to LDL.
Most doctor's know the benefits of fish oil for many things - depression, lowering cholesterol, helping heart disease / lowering blood pressure, etc. The company that makes Lovaza did the studies to get it FDA approved for this purpose. My prescription insurance covers it. So I save money cause before I was spending totally out of pocket for my EFA's. |

Stardusty:
Lovaza is primarily prescribed to treat high Triglyceride levels. It can also be used to help prevent hardening of the arteries. Some less common treatments would be to assist raising low HDL levels and treating inflammation.

If you have COSTCO in your area, just buy their brand name KIRKLAND Omega Fish Oil... It's way less expensive than others.
My husband who had an MI in February 2006, and now has maintenance meds for his BP, Cholesterol, Aspirin (81 mg), takes 2 of this Omega Fish Oil for. And he takes 2 capsules everyday and the bottle itself lasts for close to 1 year.
His Nurse Practioner recommended the Costco brand to buy. Hence, we did.
