My BELOVED first born Casey (a 12 1/2 yr old yellow lab) was just diagnosed with adenocarcinoma - cancer of the nose.
I can't even begin to explain how much I adore her and how much I've cried. I can't imagine my life without her - who knew you could love a dog so much?
Because of her age, we're not going to put her thru radiation (she'd have to have general anesthesia every day for 4 wks) and treat her with meds. I'm looking into alternative/additional/holistic therapies.
BTW if anyone know of a good holistic vet in Chicago's western suburbs I'd appreciate the info. |

Oh my gosh, I'm SO sorry to hear about this! My Trumpet has become a true member of our family, and I would be so devastated to lose him. Sending you and your pup a big e-hug and lots of good healing vibes.
I don't know much about natural/holistic pet remedies, but I can tell you that my mom and stepdad are avid raw fooders and they strongly believe that eating an all-raw diet can basically make miracles happen. I'd be a lot more skeptical, but I've seen some pretty drastic stuff -- I think a lot of it can be attributed to cutting out all the chemicals in processed foods! I don't know how that would translate in the canine world, but I hope you find a vet who's knowledgeable and helpful in these areas.

| tjsmom, I am SO sorry that you are having to go through this. Is your vet planning on removing the tumor? My beloved kitty Mew was diagnosed with cancer several years ago. The vet said that even if he removed the tumor itself, it would just come right back and either way she was on borrowed time, but I asked him to remove it anyway. It did come back, but not until three years later. Losing her was one of the most painful things I ever experienced, but those last three years were such a blessing. Hang in there and keep your head up--- we'll all be praying for you! |

So sorry to hear of Casey's illness. Know that healing thoughts are coming your way. I think seeing a holistic Vet is a wonderful idea. I work in the holistic pet care center. The turn around we have seen with animals is amazing. The right diet and supplements could give Casey much more time with you.

tsjmom,
I wish you were in western North Carolina because I have a wonderful holistic vet that has has had all sorts of success with alternative therapy. I will pray that you will get some leads on a vet. I am a dog lover and I have gone through some scary issues with my three dogs. I have something special for you and I will pm it to you.

dear tsjmom, I am so sorry and I understand,our Chancie is 12 and not getting around well anymore. We will have to put him to sleep when it is time.
They give us so,so much love. I can tell you have given her a beautiful life and I will be praying for you.

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news about Casey and can certainly understand why you wouldn't want to put her through radiation at her age. I'd make exactly the same decision.
I do hope you can find something that will help. As you know, quality of life is the most important thing. Even something that would keep her as happy and strong as possible for as long as possible would be wonderful.
I shall certainly be thinking of you both and hoping that you can find someone to help. |

| I'm so sorry to hear this. I remember when we thought we'd have to put our dog down (at the age of 2) because he was in pain and we thought it would get worse. He's stable now. I never thought I could love an animal so much. My prayers are with you and know you are doing the right thing. |

My prayers are with you. I've always had dogs (have 2 now) and can't imagine life without them.
Several things you might try. Feed Casey half a raw garlic clove wrapped in cheese per day. Try to find gallium nitrate (it used to be available from horse suppliers). I know that it is being trialed in a large number of studies for a wide range of cancers and it is relatively nontoxic (I've taken it in water myself). You would wash the area with a water solution. You'd need to look up on the WEB what an appropriate dose would be to take internally. It needs to be taken with a large amount of water so putting a bit of salt in water to make him drink more. I have also used Ellagic acid (from Skin Actives)to clear up precancerous skin lesions on my dad's hands (it worked).
Good luck. I think discussing these options and more with a holistic healer is a great idea.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your doggy too. I love my own little dog more than life itself. Here's a copy of an email I received from a friend the other day:

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old's perspective)
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Linda, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Linda told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'
Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
* When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
* Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
* Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
* Take naps.
* Stretch before rising.
* Run, romp, and play daily.
* Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
* Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
* On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
* On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
* When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
* Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
* Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.
* Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.
* If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
* When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by. |

Hi, Casey's Mom.
I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this - our furry loved ones are never with us long enough. I have 3 geriatric dogs (having lost 3 others in the last few years). I have one now who is physically healthy at 13, but seems to be going senile, but not in the normal doggie senility way (before anyone starts telling me about the drug available - we've already tried it and several others, as well as holistic methods & they only thing that's even remotely working is keeping her on a low dose of valium around the clock, increasing it when she really starts wigging out ).
Anyway - there's a product called Fresh Factors that really seems to help some dogs with cancer (along with raw foods, etc.). If you do a search on it or "dog cancer diet" - you'll get a lot of ideas on things to try to keep Casey around as long as possible with a good quality of life.
My heart goes out to you - I know all too well those feelings...

I just had to put my 16 year old Cocker down. She was a joy to have. Thanks for those wonderful words about a dog and thier love. My dogs have been my salvation. To loose one is to lose part of your self. I have one dog left from 3. I love her, she loves me. |
